The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2021 to 31 May 2022.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Greece and, in addition to his or her studies and in consultation with the Director, will participate in the Institute's events and activities and contribute to the academic and social life of the Institute. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of CAD$9,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel in Athens for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

L'Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG) lance un appel de candidatures pour la bourse Neda et Franz Leipen, offerte pour un séjour de neuf mois en Grèce du 1er septembre 2021 au 31 mai 2022.

Les candidats à la bourse Neda et Franz Leipen doivent être citoyens canadiens ou immigrants reçus, être inscrits dans un programme d'études doctorales ou postdoctorales et doivent démontrer un besoin manifeste de séjourner en Grèce pour approfondir leurs études.

Outre ses obligations en recherche et une consultation avec le Directeur, le candidat devra séjourner neuf mois en Grèce, participer aux évènements et aux activités de l'Institut et contribuer à la vie académique et sociale de l'Institut. La connaissance du pays et de la langue sera considérée comme un atout pour les candidats, bien que facultative.

La thématique de recherche du récipiendaire doit porter sur le monde hellénique, de l'antiquité à l'époque médiévale, peu importe la discipline. Il est toutefois important de signaler que les dossiers portant sur la sculpture grecque des époques classique et hellénistique seront privilégiés.

Le bénéficiaire aura l'obligation, dans toute publication ultérieure aux travaux de recherche menés sous les auspices de la bourse, de souligner le soutien de l'Institut canadien en Grèce et de la bourse Neda et Franz Leipen pour la complétion de ses travaux.

Le récipiendaire de la bourse se verra remettre une allocation de 9 000 $ CAD et un logement gratuit à lhébergement de l'ICG à Athènes pour l'entière durée de la bourse (1er septembre au 31 mai).

Chères et chers collègues,

Nous tenons à remercier toutes et tous les collègues qui ont envoyé leurs propositions pour organiser des sections parallèles au XVIe Congrès International d’épigraphie grecque et latine qui aura lieu à Bordeaux du 29 août au 2 septembre 2022, autour du thème « L'épigraphie au XXIe siècle ». Après avoir reçu et examiné toutes ces propositions, le comité scientifique et le comité d’organisation en ont sélectionné 13. Elles viennent s’ajouter au 7 qui avaient été proposées précédemment par ces mêmes comités. Nous disposons donc au total de 20 sections parallèles. Leur durée est variable, de 2 à 4 heures, ce qui permet d'accueillir entre 5 et 10 communications pour chaque section. Vous en trouverez la liste sur le site du congrès avec les informations les concernant.

Vous êtes invités désormais à soumettre une proposition de communication pour l'une de ces sessions. Chaque proposition devra indiquer le nom de l'intervenant ou des intervenants, identifier clairement la section à laquelle elle veut s'adresser et inclure un résumé de 3000 signes maximum (espaces compris). La durée des communications ne devra pas dépasser 20 minutes. Elles pourront être données dans l'une des cinq langues du congrès (français, anglais, allemand, italien, espagnol).
Veuillez envoyer votre proposition par e-mail au secrétariat du congrès (Sonia Syllac, ciegl2022@sciencesconf.org) avant le 30 mars 2021. Après vérification et validation des propositions, celui-ci les transmettra aux responsables de sections qui feront leur choix en concertation avec le comité d'organisation. La réponse sera donnée aux auteurs des propositions d'ici le mois de septembre 2021.

Vous aurez également la possibilité de présenter des projets et des résultats de recherche sur des posters. De plus amples informations sur les conditions requises pour les présentations de posters seront annoncées après la fixation du programme des sections en septembre 2021.

L’important budget que représente le congrès ne nous permet malheureusement pas d’exonérer les auteurs de communications des frais d’inscriptions. Nous pensons néanmoins les maintenir à peu près au niveau des tarifs du congrès de Vienne, soit entre 100 et 150 euros.

Dear colleagues,

We would like to thank all the colleagues who sent proposals to organize one of the parallel panels of the XVI International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy, which will take place in Bordeaux from August 29 to September 2, 2022 on the theme "Epigraphy in the 21st Century". After receiving and examining all these proposals, the Scientific Committee and the Organizing Committee have selected 13 of them, to join the 7 that had previously been proposed by these same committees. We thus have a total of 20 parallel sections. Their duration is variable, between 2 and 4 hours, which allows us to accommodate between 5 and 10 papers. You will find a list of them on the congress website with the information concerning them.

You are invited to submit a proposal for a paper to be delivered in one of these sessions. It should not exceed 20 minutes in length. It can be given in one of the five usual languages of the congress.

Please send your proposal by e-mail to the congress secretariat (Sonia Syllac, ciegl2022@sciencesconf.org) by March 30, 2021. Each proposal must include the name of the proposer(s), clearly indicate the section under which it is to be submitted and contain a summary of no more than 3000 characters (including spaces). The congress secretariat, after verification and validation of the proposals, will send them to the heads of the sections who will make their choice in collaboration with the organizing committee. A response will be sent to the authors of proposals by September 2021.

You will also have the opportunity to offer a poster to present projects and research results. Further information on the requirements for poster presentations will be announced after the section program is set in September 2021.

Unfortunately, the large budget of the conference does not allow us to exempt authors of papers from registration fees. However, we expect to keep the registration fee at about the same level as at the Vienna Congress, i.e. between 100 and 150 euros.

Bursaries for summer courses in Greek and Latin

The Department of Classics is promoting the study of Ancient Greek and Latin by students from groups currently under-represented in the field (e.g., on the basis of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status). We are offering bursaries to cover tuition for language courses ($700 per semester course), and for those visiting from outside the Toronto area, up to an additional $1,000 per semester.

In the first summer term, starting in early May and running through June, we offer LAT 101, LAT 201, and GRK 101.

In the second summer term, staring in July and running through mid-August, we offer LAT 102, LAT 202, and GRK 102.

If you are interested in applying for a bursary, please send by March 22 a cover letter as well as a copy of your university transcript (an unofficial copy is fine) to the Undergraduate Coordinator, Professor George Boys-Stones, at: undergrad.classics@utoronto.ca. In your cover letter please include a few lines to explain your eligibility for this bursary, and how it will help you to achieve your ambitions.

If you are coming from another university in North America or overseas, please see this link for information about applying and enrolling in courses through Woodsworth College (the online process is straightforward but you will need a Letter of Permission from your own university registrar or study abroad office).
