This is the formal call for papers for the Annual Conference of the Classical Association of Canada in 2021.

Conference format:

The conference will be held completely online. Individual papers will be given by prerecorded video of 20 minutes at maximum each. The videos might be accompanied by handouts, the written paper, and the presentation slides as well. These presentations will be discussed in a scheduled live session over video conference. Video presentations must be uploaded by May 10, 2021 (along with handouts, and other material) to give the audience time to watch the videos (and read the material, if any) before the videoconference discussions between May 25 and 28, 2021.

Panels in the form of round tables or workshops should consist of three to five short papers, each 10 minutes at maximum. These papers will be broadcasted live by videoconference.

Submission of abstracts :

The organizers of the conference welcome abstracts of a maximum of 300 words on any classical topic. The deadline for all submissions is February 1, 2021.

All abstracts should be submitted as Word files to the conference email address: secretary@scec-cac.ca.For individual presenters, please include your name and the term "abstract CAC 2021" in the subject heading. In the body of the letter, include your full name, affiliation, contact information and paper title. Do not include your name in the abstract but please make sure that the title of the paper on the abstract and the title on the cover letter are the same.

The conference organizers invite proposals for panels. Panels should consist of three to five short papers, each 10 min at maximum for a live session, or 20 min for prerecorded video panels. The panel organizer should submit all abstracts for the panel together along with a summary of the panel at the same time.

Graduate students should include a letter of support from their supervisors along with the abstract.

All papers and panels accepted for the cancelled Annual Conference in Victoria in May 2020 are automatically accepted for 2021 for those who wish to present them. Nevertheless we still expect formal confirmation by February 1 2021.

Payment of conference can be made starting early in April 2021 (instructions will follow). Payment will be considered as registration.

Le comité organisateur du Congrès annuel de la SCÉC 2021 lance un appel formel aux membres à soumettre leurs propositions de communication sur tout sujet concernant l'Antiquité classique.

Format de la conférence :

La conférence se tiendra entièrement en ligne. Les présentations individuelles seront offertes par vidéo préenregistrée de 20 minutes au maximum chacune. Les vidéos peuvent être accompagnées par un exemplier, le texte de votre conférence et/ou les diapositives de votre présentation en format PDF. Ces documents seront discutés lors d'une session en direct programmée par vidéoconférence. Après l'acceptation de votre proposition, vous devrez téléverser votre présentation vidéo (avec les documents souhaités) jusqu’au 10 mai 2021, afin de donner au public le temps de regarder les vidéos (et de lire le matériel, le cas échéant) avant les discussions par visioconférence entre le 25 et le 28 mai 2021. Les sessions thématiques (panels), comme les ateliers et les tables rondes, doivent être constituées de trois à cinq présentations courtes, chacune à 10 min au maximum. Ces sessions thématiques seront diffusées en direct par visioconférence.

Soumission des propositions :

Les propositions ne doivent pas dépasser 300 mots et devront parvenir aux organisateurs au plus tard le 1er février 2021. Veuillez envoyer votre proposition en format Word à l'adresse : secretary@cac-scec.ca.

Pour une présentation individuelle, veuillez inclure votre nom et le terme « proposition CAC 2021 » dans l'objet de votre message courriel. Dans le corps du message, indiquez votre nom complet, votre affiliation, vos coordonnées et le titre de votre communication. Nous vous prions de ne pas inscrire votre nom sur la proposition de communication. Pour éviter toute erreur d'identification, assurez-vous que le titre de votre communication soit identique à celui inscrit dans le corps du message.

Les propositions de sessions thématiques (« panels ») sont aussi les bienvenues. Elles devraient consister en trois à cinq communications de courte durée, chacune de 10 min au maximum pour une session en direct, ou 20 min pour les sessions thématiques par vidéos préenregistrés. L'organisateur ou organisatrice d'une session thématique devrait soumettre toutes les propositions de communication en bloc avec une brève description du thème de la session.

Les étudiant-e-s aux cycles supérieurs doivent joindre à leur proposition une lettre de recommandation de leur directeur ou directrice de recherche.

Toutes les propositions de communication et de sessions thématiques acceptées pour le congrès annulé de 2020 à l’Université de Victoria sont automatiquement retenues pour le congrès virtuel de 2021. Néanmoins, nous attendons une confirmation formelle d'ici le 1er février 2021 pour chaque proposition.

Le paiement des frais d'inscription au congrès pourra être effectué à partir du début mars 2021 (les instructions suivront). Le paiement sera considéré comme une inscription.

Elaine Fantham Award for Public Engagement in Classics, 2021
Prix « Elaine Fantham » de la SCÉC pour la mobilisation du public en Études classiques, 2021

This award is offered in memory of Professor Elaine Fantham, well known internationally for the wide range and accessibility of her scholarship in Latin Literature and Roman social history. She held positions at the University of St. Andrews, Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Toronto, Trinity College, and Princeton University. She was no stranger to the Association, serving on the editorial board of Phoenix (1976–79), as vice-president of the Association (1982–84), and as its Honorary President (2001-6). Professor Fantham was also dubbed "the rock star of the classics world" for her public engagement. From 1996 on, she contributed short comments on classical topics to National Public Radio in the United States, where she interested millions in the study of classical antiquity. This award is thus a fitting tribute to Professor Fantham who gave a public and very human voice to our discipline. It honours CAC members for their exceptional projects, performances, or events that address communities outside the academy and that engage those communities with the ancient world, its reception, and/or individual research into these fields. The type of activity and the medium of engagement (such as face to face, film, radio, print, podcast, video, exhibit and so on) are not restricted, however the engagement must be based on responsible scholarship. Social media engagement, on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, may be a factor, but not the primary medium. The award recognizes the importance and benefits of such engagement to communities, the field of Classics, as well as scholarly projects.

Criteria: Activities occurring within the last five years only are eligible. Outreach developed as part of a curriculum, for the promotion of individual departments, or undertaken as part of a CAC-sponsored event is not eligible. Nominees must be members of the CAC.

Nomination Process: Nominations should be sent by February 15, 2021, to the Past President of the CAC, Allison Glazebrook (aglazebrook@brocku.ca), and include a letter of nomination, a detailed description of the activity, and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae of the nominee. Documentation attesting to the impact of the engagement, such as testimonia from participants and communities, media coverage, and/or resulting publications will greatly strengthen any nomination, but such materials are not a requirement. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Announcement of the Award: The Past President will present the Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in May.

Ce prix est en l'honneur d'Elaine Fantham. La professeure Fantham était bien connue pour le large éventail et la grande accessibilité de ses travaux en littérature latine et en histoire sociale. Elle a notamment enseigné à l'Université de St. Andrews, à l'Indiana University Bloomington, à l'Université de Toronto, au Trinity College, et à l'Université de Princeton. Elle n'était pas étrangère à notre association, siégeant au comité de rédaction de Phoenix (1976-79), en tant que vice-présidente de la Société (1982-1984) et présidente honoraire (2001-2006). La professeure Fantham est également bien connue pour son engagement public en tant que "rock star du monde des études classiques". À partir de 1996, elle a fait de brefs commentaires sur des sujets classiques à la National Public Radio aux États-Unis, où elle a engagé des millions de personnes dans l'étude de l'antiquité classique. Le prix est en hommage au professeur Fantham qui a donné une voix publique et très humaine à notre discipline. Il honore des membres de la SCÉC pour des projets, des performances ou des évènements exceptionnels qui font appel à des gens extérieurs à la communauté universitaire et qui mobilise ces gens en ce qui a trait à l'antiquité, à sa réception et/ou aux travaux de chercheurs individuels dans ces domaines. Le type d'activité et le médium de la mobilisation (tel que des interactions en personne, publications, expositions, capsules ou entrevues radio ou vidéo, etc.) ne sont pas limitées; néanmoins, la mobilisation du public doit toujours être fondées sur une recherche responsable. Une mobilisation via des média sociaux, sur des plateformes telles que Twitter et Facebook, peut être un facteur, mais peut ne pas être le médium principal de la démarche. Ce prix a pour but de reconnaître l'importance et les retombées d'une telle mobilisation pour la communauté en général, pour le domaine des études classiques, ainsi que pour les projets universitaires.

Critères : Les activités qui ont eu lieu au cours des cinq dernières années seulement sont éligibles. Les activités de sensibilisation qui ont été développées dans le cadre de programmes, fait pour la promotion de départements précis ou entrepris grâce à des activités promues par la SCÉC ne sont pas éligibles. Les candidat.e.s doivent être membres de la SCÉC. 

Processus de nomination: Les nominations doivent être envoyées, le 15 février 2021 au plus tard, à la présidente sortante de la SCÉC, Allison Glazebrook (aglazebrook@brocku.ca), et inclure une lettre de nomination, une description détaillée de l'activité et un curriculum vitae à jour du ou de la candidat.e. Prize for the Best PhD Dissertation
Prix pour la meilleure thèse de doctorat

The Classical Association of Canada is pleased to announce the fifth competition for the CAC Prize for the Best PhD Dissertation by a member of the CAC/SCEC in Classics, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, or Ancient Philosophy accepted for a doctoral degree at a Canadian university.

The prize is awarded biennially at the Annual Meeting of the Association for an outstanding dissertation in Classics, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, or Ancient Philosophy written by a paid-up member of the CAC/SCÉC and accepted for a doctoral degree at a Canadian university. The fifth award will be made in May 2021, in Victoria, at the Association's Annual Meeting. This will recognize the best dissertation accepted during the period 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2020. The value of the prize is $500.

Each nomination must include the following:

1. an electronic copy of the dissertation in PDF format;
2. a letter from the university's Faculty of Graduate Studies attesting that the dissertation was accepted for the doctoral degree during the period under consideration;
3. a letter of nomination from the Department Head, Chair, or Graduate Programme Director, explaining the specific merits and originality of the dissertation. Where a department submits more than one dissertation, the Department Head, Chair, or Graduate Programme Director should forward a separate memorandum addressing the relative merits of the various submissions.

The adjudication committee consists of five members: the immediate Past President (as Chair of the committee), one other member of Council (co-opted by the Past President), and three members-at-large of the Association.

COVID-19 micro-grants
Micro-subventions « COVID-19 »

In order to assist in alleviating economic and professional disruptions caused, at least in part, by the economic impacts of COVID-19, the CAC is pleased to offer a second round of “micro-grants” to those members in the “Member, income less than $40,000” or “Member, student” categories. (Applicants in the first round ar eligible to apply again.) These grants are intended to help members with expenses that relate to the objectives of the organization, especially those associated with research, and with those expenses that they have incurred unexpectedly as a result of COVID-19 that affect research (e.g., unexpected childcare expenses, increased internet access costs, books purchased because of library closures, etc.).

Pour contribuer à minimizer les difficultés économiques et professionnelles causées, du moins en partie, par l'impact du COVID-19, la SCEC est heureuse d'offrir une deuxième série de micro-subventions aux membres de la catégorie « Membre adherent, revenu inférieur à 40,000 $ » ou « Membre étudiant(e) ». (Les candidats de la première série peuvent postuler à nouveau.) Le but de ces subventions est d'aider les membres à payer les frais liés aux objectifs de la Société, surtout ceux associés à la recherche et aussi ceux qu'ils ont dû payer, de façon inattendue à cause de la COVID-19, qui affectent leurs recherches (par exemple, frais imprévus de garde d'enfants, augmentation des frais d'accès à l'internet, achats de livres causés par la fermeture des bibliothèques).

Upcoming changes in the diffusion of CAC and other announcements

This bulletin is the last to be edited by Guy Chamberland, and we are deeply grateful for his long-standing service to the Association, in this and many other tasks. Merci, Guy!

A new team of Chelsea Gardner and Peter Miller will be managing the online communications of the association, and council has asked them to work on a news service for our organizaiton that posts items immediately and that is integrated with Twitter and Facebook. Further news on this will be provided in January.

As the year draws to a close, I would like to encourage you to donate to one or more of the Association’s activities and scholarships, including Travel Assistance to the Annual General Meeting, the Margaret Thompson Prize in Greek, the Peter Lawson Smith Prize in Latin, the John Geyssen Subsidy, the Conacher Scholarship, and the Grace Irwin Award.

Let me also highlight the Mosaic Scholarship, awarded for the first time this year. This award encourages and supports undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups in Canada in the discipline of Classics.

Since the CAC is a registered charitable organization, all donations over $20 receive an official receipt for income tax purposes.

American School of Classical Studies at Athens
Director of the excavations of the Athenian Agora

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens seeks an active scholar and experienced field archaeologist to direct its excavations of the Athenian Agora. Familiarity with the School’s program of excavation and research at the Agora is highly desirable. The Director administers the School’s plant and facilities at the Agora. The Director works with the excavation staff in developing and conducting fieldwork and documenting results. The Director supervises the management of collections and the publication of all finds. The Director identifies projects for funding and helps to identify possible sources of funds for the excavations. The Director participates in the School’s activities, including its academic program and the instruction of students through the summer volunteer program. Candidates must demonstrate strong qualities of leadership and articulate clearly their vision for the future of the Athenian Agora excavations. Command of Modern Greek is essential.

The term of residency in Athens is flexible in order to accommodate applicants who teach on semester and quarter terms or have other university teaching requirements. The initial appointment is for three to five years, with five years being the preferred norm. It begins on July 1, 2022, and is renewable. Salary and benefits commensurate with rank and experience; certain travel costs are provided.

The Director of the Excavations of the Athenian Agora reports to the Director of the School and through the Director to the Managing Committee. The current Director of the Agora Excavations is not seeking a new term.

The Classics and Religious Studies (CLARE) department at the University of Calgary is seeking submissions for our graduate conference that explores the relationship between modernity and the past within the humanities and social sciences. Hosted by the CLARE Department, and the Classics, Religious Studies, Anthropology, Interdisciplinary Group (CRAIG), this year's conference will take place from March 12-13 of 2021. Details about the format and keynote speakers will be announced in the coming weeks, so please monitor your email.

Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics 2021–2022

The Department of Classics at Mount Allison University is accepting applications for the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2021–2022. The Crake Fellowship is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who, at the time of taking up the fellowship, have completed all course and residential requirements for a Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.

The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to the end of April.

The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2021 to 31 May 2022.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture. In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$9,000 and free accommodations in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs, Greek Fortifications (1971) and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), as well as a series of articles in the American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) entitled “Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I – IV.” His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.

Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter's family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2021.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.

To apply, write to Dr Angus Smith (rsmith@brocku.ca) by 1 March 2021, including a curriculum vitae, an outline of the proposed research and an explanation for the need to travel for this research. Please arrange for two referees familiar with your work to send letters of support for your application to Dr Smith.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD$2,000.
