Elaine Fantham Award for Public Engagement in Classics, 2021

This award is offered in memory of Professor Elaine Fantham, well known internationally for the wide range and accessibility of her scholarship in Latin Literature and Roman social history. She held positions at the University of St. Andrews, Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Toronto, Trinity College, and Princeton University. She was no stranger to the Association, serving on the editorial board of Phoenix (1976–79), as vice-president of the Association (1982–84), and as its Honorary President (2001-6). Professor Fantham was also dubbed "the rock star of the classics world" for her public engagement. From 1996 on, she contributed short comments on classical topics to National Public Radio in the United States, where she interested millions in the study of classical antiquity. This award is thus a fitting tribute to Professor Fantham who gave a public and very human voice to our discipline. It honours CAC members for their exceptional projects, performances, or events that address communities outside the academy and that engage those communities with the ancient world, its reception, and/or individual research into these fields. The type of activity and the medium of engagement (such as face to face, film, radio, print, podcast, video, exhibit and so on) are not restricted, however the engagement must be based on responsible scholarship. Social media engagement, on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, may be a factor, but not the primary medium. The award recognizes the importance and benefits of such engagement to communities, the field of Classics, as well as scholarly projects.
Criteria: Activities occurring within the last five years only are eligible. Outreach developed as part of a curriculum, for the promotion of individual departments, or undertaken as part of a CAC-sponsored event is not eligible. Nominees must be members of the CAC.
Nomination Process: Nominations should be sent by February 15, 2021, to the Past President of the CAC, Allison Glazebrook (aglazebrook@brocku.ca), and include a letter of nomination, a detailed description of the activity, and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae of the nominee. Documentation attesting to the impact of the engagement, such as testimonia from participants and communities, media coverage, and/or resulting publications will greatly strengthen any nomination, but such materials are not a requirement. Self-nominations are encouraged.
Announcement of the Award: The Past President will present the Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in May.

Ce prix est en l'honneur d'Elaine Fantham. La professeure Fantham était bien connue pour le large éventail et la grande accessibilité de ses travaux en littérature latine et en histoire sociale. Elle a notamment enseigné à l'Université de St. Andrews, à l'Indiana University Bloomington, à l'Université de Toronto, au Trinity College, et à l'Université de Princeton. Elle n'était pas étrangère à notre association, siégeant au comité de rédaction de Phoenix (1976-79), en tant que vice-présidente de la Société (1982-1984) et présidente honoraire (2001-2006). La professeure Fantham est également bien connue pour son engagement public en tant que "rock star du monde des études classiques". Le type d'activité et le médium de la mobilisation (tel que des interactions en personne, publications, expositions, capsules ou entrevues radio ou vidéo, etc.) ne sont pas limitées; néanmoins, la mobilisation du public doit toujours être fondées sur une recherche responsable. Une mobilisation via des média sociaux, sur des plateformes telles que Twitter et Facebook, peut être un facteur, mais peut ne pas être le médium principal de la démarche. Ce prix a pour but de reconnaître l'importance et les retombées d'une telle mobilisation pour la communauté en général, pour le domaine des études classiques, ainsi que pour les projets universitaires.
Critères : Les activités qui ont eu lieu au cours des cinq dernières années seulement sont éligibles. Les activités de sensibilisation qui ont été développées dans le cadre de programmes, fait pour la promotion de départements précis ou entrepris grâce à des activités promues par la SCÉC ne sont pas éligibles. COVID-19 micro-grants
Micro-subventions « COVID-19 »

In order to assist in alleviating economic and professional disruptions caused, at least in part, by the economic impacts of COVID-19, the CAC is pleased to offer a second round of “micro-grants” to those members in the “Member, income less than $40,000” or “Member, student” categories. (Applicants in the first round ar eligible to apply again.) These grants are intended to help members with expenses that relate to the objectives of the organization, especially those associated with research, and with those expenses that they have incurred unexpectedly as a result of COVID-19 that affect research (e.g., unexpected childcare expenses, increased internet access costs, books purchased because of library closures, etc.).

Note that this is a directory of Classicists: I will not add names of people who happen to teach only a Classics course tangentially while their professional life is in another discipline.

Late Antiquity and/or Early Islam, Assistant Professor

The Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the area of Late Antiquity and/or Early Islam. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant, multi-disciplinary scholarly community at UTSC and in the tri-campus University of Toronto with related regional, temporal, and thematic foci.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Classics, Middle East Studies, History, Religion, Art History, Archeology, or another, closely related discipline by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. They must demonstrate a record of excellence in research and teaching in the field of Late Antique studies and/or the study of early Islam both conceptually and methodologically. We are particularly interested in scholars with active, interdisciplinary research agendas focusing on one or more of the following thematic areas: Religious history, transnational connections, race, ethnicity, and identity, as well as postcolonial or decolonial approaches to the field. A significant element of applicants' current and future research must look at Late Antiquity and/or early Islam in any region in the wider area from North and East Africa to the Indian Subcontinent, with evident attention to relevant sources and languages. The successful candidate's research and teaching interests must complement our department's strength in the study of mobilities of people, objects, ideas, and practices within and across imperial formations, and will share our commitment to non-Eurocentric, decolonial pedagogy. Candidates must be prepared to teach undergraduate courses in both Classical Studies and at least one other HCS undergraduate program, based on their thematic and/or regional specialization. They also must be able to contribute to one or more of the University of Toronto's graduate programs, where they will hold a graduate appointment.
The successful candidate must be engaged in innovative and independent research of a recognized international caliber and will be expected to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a research statement, a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, and awards and accolades and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through a teaching dossier consisting of a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, demonstrated through the application materials.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Ovid and the Natural World

Ovid has arguably become the Roman poet of the moment. From fairly recent college demands that he should be kicked off a Humanities curriculum we now have Helen Morales' book, Antigone Rising, which, in a chapter on myth and #Me too, argues that Ovid is a poet of deep empathy who offers insight into the psychology of sexual assault and explores the effects of trauma upon the victims. But how does Ovid measure up against another great crisis of our age, climate change? Discussion of his representation of nature has tended to focus on his vivid pictorial descriptions of landscapes in the Metamorphoses, which inspired the dream-like landscapes of the seventeenth century French painter Claude Lorrain, for instance; in Ovid's myth of Actaeon, the statement in the description of Diana's grotto that nature had imitated art (Met. 3.158–9) was taken as an aesthetic credo by artists and landscape gardeners from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century. Yet that statement can be read as a subterfuge, a decoy that prevents suspicion of natur's savagery, as embodied by the angry Diana; the crystalline water of the grotto's pool is the instrument of Actaeon's cruel transformation. The poet plays here with illusion, but also shows that nature fights back against transgression.
This panel invites papers that go beyond the "pictorial Ovid" to explore in greater depth Ovid's relationship to the natural world. Ovidian poetry offers a view of the world familiar us today, where the divide between human and nonhuman is blurred; all created beings, in Ovid's world, are related, but the breakdown between the categories of human, animal, plant, stone, mountain, etc. happens particularly at moments of crisis. But does Ovid recognize through his poetry the threats that human beings pose to the natural world through the ideology of domination? How are these ecocritical issues explored in the literary and artistic reception of Ovid?

The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2021 to 31 May 2022.
The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.
The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.
The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture. In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.
The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$9,000 and free accommodations in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

L'Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG) lance un appel à candidatures pour la bourse Neda et Franz Leipen qui sera offerte pour un séjour de neuf mois à Athènes du 1er septembre 2021 au 31 mai 2022.
Les candidats à la bourse Neda et Franz Leipen doivent être citoyens canadiens ou immigrants reçus, être inscrits dans un programme d'études doctorales ou postdoctorales et doivent démontrer un besoin manifeste de séjourner en Grèce pour approfondir leurs études.

Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs, Greek Fortifications (1971) and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), as well as a series of articles in the American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) entitled “Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I – IV.” His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.
Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter's family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.
The Institute therefore invites applications for the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2021.
The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.
In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.
One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD$2,000.

Ancien professeur d'histoire de l'art à l'Université de Toronto, Frederick Winter (1922–2011) a publié de nombreux travaux sur l'archéologie du monde classique. Il est connu surtout pour deux ouvrages, Greek Fortifications (1971) et Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), et pour une série d'articles dans l'American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) intitulée « Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I–IV ». Sa femme, Joan, compagne inséparable durant ses recherches sur le terrain, a joué un rôle crucial autant dans la collecte que dans l’analyse des données. Fred et Joan ont visité ensemble un grand nombre de sites, jugeant que l'expérience personnelle acquise sur le terrain était indispensable.
Afin de soutenir et d'assister les études sur le terrain d'étudiants canadiens en Grèce et dans le monde méditerranéen, la famille du professeur Winter a créé la « Bourse d'études et de voyage Frederick et Joan Winter » avec l'assistance de l'Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG).
L'Institut canadien en Grèce lance un appel à candidatures pour la Bourse d'études et de voyage Frederick et Joan Winter pour un séjour qui sera effectué au printemps ou à l'été 2021.
Les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiens ou immigrants reçus et inscrits dans un programme d'études graduées ou postdoctorales. Ils doivent aussi démontrer un besoin manifeste de séjourner en Grèce ou ailleurs en Méditerranée pour mener des recherches sur le monde hellénique, de l'antiquité à l'époque médiévale, dans la discipline de leur choix.
Pour déposer votre dossier de candidature, veuillez contacter le professeur Angus Smith (rsmith@brocku.ca) avant le 1er mars 2021. Les dossiers doivent comprendre un curriculum vitae, un plan détaillé du projet d'études en Grèce, et une justification de la nécessité de mener des recherches sur le terrain. Veuillez demander à deux professeurs souhaitant appuyer votre démarche d'envoyer une lettre d’appui au professeur Smith.
Dans les trois mois qui suivront la fin de la période de recherche, le candidat devra envoyer, au président du comité des bourses de l'ICG, un court rapport décrivant le travail accompli.
Le bénéficiaire aura l'obligation, dans toute publication résultant des travaux de recherche menés grâce à cette bourse, de souligner le soutien de l'Institut canadien en Grèce et de la bourse Frederick et Joan Winter.
Une ou plusieurs bourses seront offertes chaque année jusqu'à concurrence de 2000 $ CAD (total des bourses).

AGM of the Ontario Classical Association

The Ontario Classical Association is happy to announce that our AGM will be occurring online this year on Saturday, October 24th from 1pm to 4pm. The subject of our AGM this year is online education.
Christina Vester will be delivering our keynote address (1–2 pm) on teaching introductory languages online. She will be followed by our AGM (2-2:30 pm), and then a roundtable (2:30-3:15 pm) on various topics including:
Following that, we will disband into two sets of smaller breakout groups where members can (and are encouraged to) start smaller discussions on each topic (3:15-4 pm).
There is no cost associated with this AGM, but members are encouraged to become members of the OCA. Membership from this point on will also apply to the 2021 calendar year.
