CALL FOR PAPERS — WOMEN'S NETWORK — VICTORIA 2020
APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS — RÉSEAU DES FEMMES — VICTORIA 2020
From / De Lisa Hughes
Le français suit
The Women's Network / Réseau des Femmes of the CAC/SCÉC invites submissions for two panels:
Since 2017, the Women's Classical Committee (UK) has made significant strides in combating gender inequality online through their successful #WCCWiki project. The contributors' targeted approach to rectify the gender imbalance of classicist biographies on Wikipedia has demonstrated the potential of online platforms to facilitate feminist activism and has also increased awareness of female scholars and our academic foremothers.
In the spirit of the #WCCWiki project, we invite submissions that explore the importance of female classical scholars and their pioneering contributions to academia. Papers that focus on the careers and contributions of Canadian female classicists are particularly encouraged.
Inclusive pedagogical practices support diversity. We invite submissions that include course and syllabus development to promote inclusive teaching methods. Panelists are encouraged to share syllabi and discuss methods, outcomes, successes and issues.
We warmly encourage all scholars and graduate students who are interested in these topics to apply. The Women's Network is a loose-knit group of scholars and students who are interested in the advancement of scholarship on ancient gender, and support women's academic careers in Classical Studies. Membership in the CAC is required for participation. Graduate students should send a note of support from their supervisor along with the abstract.
Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words with relevant bibliography by Monday, January 15th 2020 [see previous post: deadline extended to Monday February 3rd] to Emily Varto, Women's Network Secretary (e.varto@dal.ca) and to the conference email address ( cac.scec2020@uvic.ca). Please indicate in your email if you would like to have your abstract considered for the regular sessions, if it is not included in the Women's Network panel.

Application of Geomatics and Environmental Landscape Analysis for
Archeological Interpretation of the Velino Valley in central Italy
From Myles McCallum
The Department of Geography at Saint Mary’s University is looking for a motivated student interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Geography with applications in Archeology for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 academic calendar years. This position is made possible through SSHRC and Saint Mary’s Graduate School funding associated with an archaeological research project, the Reassessing Roman Villas, active in the Velino Valley of the Apennines in central Italy. One of the goals of this project is to understand better how the creation of monumental villas and sanctuary sites in the countryside of Roman Italy affected social and economic exchange networks, settlement patterns, and resource exploitation. The PI of this research project, Dr. Myles McCallum (Dept. of Modern Languages and Classics), and Dr. van Proosdij (Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies) will advise a student who will engage in a topographical and environmental study of the Velino Valley with archaeological implications. One of the main outcomes of this research will be the creation of a functional GIS and data recording and management system for the project that will allow for the recording and spatial analysis of known archaeological sites, excavation data, survey data, environmental, hydrological, and geomorphological data. This will include integration of imagery and 3D surface modelling using remotely piloted aircraft systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in geomatics, database design and spatial analysis and have completed an honours thesis in geography, environmental science or studies, anthropology or a related discipline. In addition, the candidate should have a keen curiosity and desire to understand past landscapes. The ability to communicate in Italian will be considered an asset.
The student will become part of a dynamic cross disciplinary consortium of researchers conducting applied research on past, present and future landscape response to climate change and human impacts. Funding for the MA is guaranteed for two years at a rate of $12,000 per year with the possibility of additional funding during the summer months. Please follow the link for details about the MA in Geography program as well as admission requirements. For more information, please contact Dr. Myles McCallum at myles.mccallum@smu.ca (tel: 902-420-5815). Students are encouraged to correspond with Dr. McCallum or Dr. Danika van Proosdij (dvanproo@smu.ca) prior to January 24, 2020 indicating their intent to apply. Applications to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research are due by Feb 1, 2020.

REPORT FROM THE CANADIAN INSTITUTE IN GREECE
RAPPORT DE L'INSTITUT CANADIEN EN GRÈCE
From Gerry Schaus
Dr. Jonathan Tomlinson, Assistant Director of CIG reports:
The Canadian Institute in Greece sponsored five archaeological fieldwork projects in summer 2019. Three of them were new projects. The two continuing projects were cooperative ones with the responsible Ephorates of Antiquities – excavations at Ancient Argilos (Macedonia) co-directed by Prof. Jacques Perreault (Univ. of Montreal), and at Stelida (Naxos) co-directed by Prof. Tristan Carter (McMaster Univ.). The first new project, the Central Achaia Phthiotis Survey, follows on the work of the Kastro Kallithea Archaeological Project co-directed by Prof. Margriet Haagsma (Univ. of Alberta), and continues as a cooperative project with the local ephorate. The other two new projects are both independent CIG surveys: the Bays of Eastern Attica Regional Survey, located around Porto Raphti, co-directed by Profs. Sarah Murray (Univ. of Toronto) and Catherine Pratt (Western Univ.), and the Khavania Topograpical and Architectural Mapping Project, near Ayios Nikolaos (East Crete), co-directed by Profs. Rodney Fitzsimmons (Trent Univ.) and Matt Buell (Concordian Univ.). In addition, there were study seasons at Ancient Eleon (Prof. Brendan Burke, U.Vic.), at Stymphalos (Prof. Hector Williams, UBC and Gerry Schaus, WLU), and for the Western Argolid Regional Project (Prof. Scott Gallimore, WLU).
