CALL FOR PAPERS — WOMEN'S NETWORK — VICTORIA 2020
APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS — RÉSEAU DES FEMMES — VICTORIA 2020
From / De Lisa Hughes
Le français suit
The Women's Network / Réseau des Femmes of the CAC/SCÉC invites submissions for two panels:
Since 2017, the Women's Classical Committee (UK) has made significant strides in combating gender inequality online through their successful #WCCWiki project. The contributors' targeted approach to rectify the gender imbalance of classicist biographies on Wikipedia has demonstrated the potential of online platforms to facilitate feminist activism and has also increased awareness of female scholars and our academic foremothers.
In the spirit of the #WCCWiki project, we invite submissions that explore the importance of female classical scholars and their pioneering contributions to academia. Papers that focus on the careers and contributions of Canadian female classicists are particularly encouraged.
Inclusive pedagogical practices support diversity. We invite submissions that include course and syllabus development to promote inclusive teaching methods. Panelists are encouraged to share syllabi and discuss methods, outcomes, successes and issues.
We warmly encourage all scholars and graduate students who are interested in these topics to apply. The Women's Network is a loose-knit group of scholars and students who are interested in the advancement of scholarship on ancient gender, and support women's academic careers in Classical Studies. Membership in the CAC is required for participation. Graduate students should send a note of support from their supervisor along with the abstract.
Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words with relevant bibliography by Monday, January 15th 2020 to Emily Varto, Women's Network Secretary (e.varto@dal.ca) and to the conference email address (cac.scec2020@uvic.ca). Please indicate in your email if you would like to have your abstract considered for the regular sessions, if it is not included in the Women's Network panel.

FIEC: ENDOWMENT TO SUSTAIN papyri.info
FIEC: FONDS DE SOUTIEN À papyri.info
Du rédacteur / From the Editor
Allison Glazebrook and Michael Sampson informed me of the following announcement sent by Prof. Sabine R. Huebner, Secrétaire générale de la FIÉC, on behalf of Prof. Sofia Torallas Tovar and Prof. Paut Schubert.
A call to sustain our digital tools in papyrology
Ancient papyri represent the largest and richest corpus of documents from Antiquity. They have made a profound contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the civilizations of the Ancient Mediterranean, including everyday life, administrative and legaL dynamics, political change and literary production. Since the early 1990s papyrologists have been at the forefront of the digital revolution in the humanities.
Not only have the tools that we have developed transformed our own discipline, they also have done much service to the broader scientific community. We take pride both in the high standards of scholarship offered by these resources, and in the fact that they are almost completely available in Open Access. Among the various digital tools which papyrologists use on a daily basis, papyri.info assuredly holds the most essential position; all of our other resources depend upon it.
Can we take all this for granted?
Certainly not.
Funding agencies have become reluctant to support projects that, essentially, have no time limit. While this can be partly compensated by the input made directly by the community of scientists, papyri.info still requires monitoring on a daily basis to channel these efforts.
The Association Internationale de Papyrologues (AIP) and the American Society of Papyrologists (ASP) are launching a joint call to establish an endowment to cover the salary for the permanent, full-time position of papyri.info coordinator. The endowment’s target is set at 2.5 million USD, of which $500,000 has already been secured in matching funds, thanks to the generosity of a donor.
We appeal to the further generosity of all individuals, institutions and funding agencies, asking them to help us to ensure that scholars and students in papyrology and related
disciplines can continue to benefit from this important resource over the
> coming decades. The target is realistic, provided that all members of the scientific community contribute to the effort; but if we do not act promptly, the sustainability of this
essential tool will soon be severely threatened.
You can make a donation by following this link or you may contact Helen Cullyer, Executive Director of the Society for Classical Studies (helen.cullyer@nyu.edu), who will help you to channel your contribution in the most appropriate way.
Please help us to secure the future for the next generation of papyrologists, be generous, and encourage your friends and colleagues to join us in supporting this call.
