REV. M. OWEN LEE

From Jonathan Burgess

M. Owen Lee was born in Detroit in 1930 and received his BA and MA in Classics from the University of Toronto in 1957, and his PhD in Classics from the University of British Columbia in 1960. He also received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology at St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto in 1957, the same year he was ordained as a priest in the Congregation of St. Basil. Father Lee taught for decades at St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto, as well as in our graduate department from 1990-1995. He also held positions at the University of St. Thomas, Houston from 1968 to 1972, Loyola University of Chicago from 1972 to 1974, and Loyola Rome Center in 1974–1975. After returning to the University of Toronto he was promoted to full Professor in 1979.

An engaging and nurturing teacher, Father Lee received outstanding teaching awards three times at the University of St. Thomas and at the University of Toronto in 1994. He was the author of numerous academic articles and books, with a specialty in Latin poetry. But his interests were wide: he was also the author of many popular articles and books about cinema, music, and opera. To the general public he was famous for his participation in intermission radio presentations for the Metropolitan Opera. He was awarded honorary degrees by the University of Windsor in 1994, the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1998, and St. Michael’s College in 2001. It is a remarkable indication of his public stature that an obituary was published in the the July 26th edition of the New York Times, as well as in the July 31st edition of the Globe and Mail.

CAC ELAINE FANTHAM AWARD FOR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT IN CLASSICS (REMINDER)
PRIX « ELAINE FANTHAM » DE LA SCÉC POUR LA MOBILISATION DU PUBLIC EN ÉTUDES CLASSIQUES (RAPPEL)

From / De Mark Joyal

This award is offered in memory of Professor Elaine Fantham, well known internationally for the wide range and accessibility of her scholarship in Latin Literature and Roman social history. She held positions at the University of St. Andrews, Indiana University Bloomington, the University of Toronto, Trinity College, and Princeton University. She was no stranger to the Association, serving on the editorial board of Phoenix (1976–79), as vice-president of the Association (1982–84), and as its Honorary President (2001-6). Professor Fantham was also dubbed “the rock star of the classics world” for her public engagement. From 1996 on, she contributed short comments on classical topics to National Public Radio in the United States, where she interested millions in the study of classical antiquity. This award is thus a fitting tribute to Professor Fantham who gave a public and very human voice to our discipline. It honours CAC members for their exceptional projects, performances, or events that address communities outside the academy and that engage those communities with the ancient world, its reception, and/or individual research into these fields. The type of activity and the medium of engagement (such as face to face, film, radio, print, podcast, video, exhibit and so on) are not restricted, however the engagement must be based on responsible scholarship. Social media engagement, on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, may be a factor, but not the primary medium. The award recognizes the importance and benefits of such engagement to communities, the field of Classics, as well as scholarly projects.

Criteria: Activities occurring within the last five years only are eligible. Outreach developed as part of a curriculum, for the promotion of individual departments, or undertaken as part of a CAC-sponsored event is not eligible. Nominees must be members of the CAC.

Nomination Process: Nominations should be sent by February 15, 2020, to the Past President of the CAC, Mark Joyal (m.joyal@umanitoba.ca), and include a letter of nomination, a detailed description of the activity, and an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae of the nominee. Documentation attesting to the impact of the engagement, such as testimonia from participants and communities, media coverage, and/or resulting publications will greatly strengthen any nomination, but such materials are not a requirement. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Announcement of the Award: The Past President will present the Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in May.

Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated by the quality of representative writing samples submitted with the application, publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals, presentations at conferences, the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements by referees.

While this position includes no formal graduate appointment or graduate teaching duties, the successful candidate will also be part of the community of the tri-campus Graduate Department of Classics. Follow the link for further information about the Department of Classics.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant intellectual community of world-class scholars at Canada's largest university, which is home to one of North America's largest group of Classicists. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is one of the most fascinating, diverse and "livable" places in the world.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applications must be submitted online by 15 January 2020, and include 1) a cover letter, 2) a CV, 3) one article-length sample of academic writing, 4) a statement of research interests, 5) a statement of contribution to equity and diversity (see below), 6) copies of academic transcripts and 7) a teaching dossier to include the items listed above.

Equity and diversity are among UTM's core values and are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1–2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must also arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly by the referee by email (on letterhead and signed) to historical.studies@utoronto.ca by the closing date.

Please follow the link for submission guidelines. We recommend combining attached documents into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. For further questions about this position, please contact the Chair of the Department, Prof. Rebecca Wittmann (historical.studies@utoronto.ca).

The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons / persons of colour, women, Indigenous / Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

As part of your application, you will be asked to complete a brief Diversity Survey. This survey is voluntary. Any information directly related to you is confidential and cannot be accessed by search committees or human resources staff. Results will be aggregated for institutional planning purposes. For more information, please please follow this link.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

GREECE–TURKEY / GRÈCE–TURQUIE

From John Serrati

CLA 3901 – Ancient World Study Trip / Voyage d'études en Méditerranée

Although less famous than classical Greek civilisation of the fifth century BC, the ancient Greek world actually reached the height of its power and influence in the Hellenistic era. Inaugurated by Alexander the Great, this was a world of large kingdoms and grandiose capitals. Within these metropolises, the old Greek gymnasia were transformed into centres of higher education whose libraries sought to collect all human known knowledge and whose classrooms developed the empirical scientific method. The Hellenistic period looked both East and West: the Macedonian kings who inhabited Vergina and Philippi looked to mainland Greece for models on which to organise their society. However, once Alexander led them East, they came to be influenced just as much by the highly advanced civilisations that existed on their borders. As a conduit for eastern trade and as the gateway to the Greek motherland, Asia Minor became immensely wealthy and was symbolic of the new era as the cities of Ephesos and Pergamon emerged as true metropolises and centres of Greek culture. Their ruins now form some of the greatest archaeological sites from the ancient Greek world. Like the Hellenistic world, both northern Greece and modern Turkey look East as well as West. Thessaloniki has a significantly more cosmopolitan feel that the rest of Greece, while the rich traditions of Turkey are influenced as much by the Middle East as they are Europe. Thus a journey from northern Greece down the west coast of Turkey is a unique experience, enticing in its contrasts; no other place on the Mediterranean seems so familiar and yet so exotic all at once. 2020 will mark the fourteenth year of the field trip, its fourth visit to Greece and its second to Turkey.

UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH
CANTA / ἌΕΙΔΕ: A JOURNAL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES

From Rachel Hill

The University of Guelph celebrated the launch of its peer-reviewed, peer-refereed undergraduate journal: Canta/Ἄειδε: a Journal of Classical Studies. This digital, open-access journal platform was first proposed in 2017 and is operated by the Classical Studies Program’s undergraduate coalition, The Guelph Classics Society. Canta/ἄειδε is a natural complement to the Society’s annual Symposium conference. All papers submitted to the Journal were first presented to the Symposium, and then, following a peer-review and editing process, selected articles were accepted for publication. The Journal was launched officially on Wednesday, November 6th 2019. The first issue, coming January 2020, will feature articles exploring the theme of "Classical Conflict".

The Guelph Classics Society acknowledges the support of its devoted faculty members, Dr. John Walsh (Founding Editor), Dr. Padriag O'Cleirigh (Editor-in-Chief), Dr. Andrew Sherwood (Editor-in-Chief), and the School of Languages and Literatures. Additionally, the contributions of undergraduate students Rachel Hill (Founder and Co-Manager) and Christopher Giampaolo (Digital Content Creator and Co-Manager) are recognized along with the efforts of the Guelph Classics Society’s entire Executive team. The Journal founders are indebted to Kathryn Davies, Julia Deane, Krystal Furlani, Angela Gismondi, Sabrina Goupil, Sumana Gupta, Jesse Peixoto and Rachel Schenk-Martin for their efforts in making this endeavour a success.
