Alison Barclay (Saint Mary's University) informed me of the death of Michael Mills (University of New Brunswick) with a link to the obituary on the website of the McAdam's Funeral Home. Below is a short excerpt.

"The death of Michael John Mills of New Maryland, NB occurred on February 2, 2018 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.

A native of England, Michael obtained his degrees at Corpus Christie College, Oxford, and then taught at the University of California, Los Angeles before moving to Canada, where he taught at the UNB Department of Classics and Ancient History for many years."

The Council of the CAC wishes to offer each year, insofar as possible, financial assistance to encourage and support participation at the Annual conference for graduate students and those with a PhD but without a permanent academic position. Students will be reimbursed after they have attended the meetings. Students must provide the Treasurer with the application form and original hard copy receipts for travel (air, bus, train or cost of gas; maximum two nights hotel); no one will be reimbursed without original, hard copy receipts. Financial support will be in the range of $150. The deadline for application is June 8, 2018.

2. While I wish death upon no-one, obituaries have been few and far in between over the past year. Make sure to forward me obituaries of Canadian classicists. Ideally, if you submit a standard obituary, i.e. written for family, friends, and the local community, add a few lines about the academic and scholarly achievements of the deceased. If any name has not been forwarded to anyone on the CAC Council or me over the past year, please do so before the Annual General Meeting on May 10th 2018, when the name of deceased colleagues will be announced by the President.
3. I have become aware of the fact that at least one distinguished member of this Association didn't receive the supplementary issues posted on January 9th and January 31st. If you have received neither, or only one of these, please let me know. It may well be that your email address, as I have it in my list, needs to be updated. I have actually just updated a number of Queen's addresses, removing the old "post" element (soandso@post.queensu.ca) which seemed to be problematic. If you're at Queen's and surprised to receive this issue after so much time, welcome back!
4. Please, before you submit any announcement, make sure your hyperlinks work. (It so happens that one of the announcements in this issue was equipped with an old, unsecure link to a departmental web page.) Also, please, don't feel the need to double-space after a period. LECTURER IN GREEK AND LATIN LANGUAGES 2018–2019

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) is seeking applications for a one-year leave replacement Lecturer position in Greek and Latin Languages. This 1-year appointment is expected to commence September 1, 2018. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

A Lecturer position is a non-tenure track appointment, which entails a probationary first year. Reappointment would be at the discretion of the University and subject to availability of funding and demonstration of excellence in teaching, in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association.

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a related field, and teaching experience. The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to teaching and be able to teach both introductory and advanced Greek and Latin. This position involves teaching eight 3-credit courses (i.e., a total of 24 credits across the period of appointment) and participating in student advising, departmental service, events and initiatives.

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies invites applications for a Sessional Lecturer to teach Greek and Roman Mythology, Greek Archaeology, the Ancient World on Film, and ancient Greek. The successful applicant will be expected to teach five courses over two semesters. Applicants should hold a PhD, show potential for success as a university professor, and have demonstrable skill and enthusiasm in teaching a broad range of courses in Classical Studies:

FIFTEENTH INTERNATIONAL FIEC CONGRESS
LONDON, JULY 4–8, 2019

We are delighted to announce that the 15th International FIEC Congress will be held in London, 4-8 July, 2019, hosted by the Classical Association, the Hellenic Society and the Roman Society, in collaboration with the Institute of Classical Studies, London, UCL, KCL, Birkbeck College, Royal Holloway University of London and Roehampton University.

The Congress will take place at the Institute of Education (University College London) in Bloomsbury, close to the British Museum, British Library, and the University of London’s Senate House.

The FIEC AGM and Bureau Meetings will take place on Thursday 4 July. The Congress will begin on Friday 5 July and end on Monday 8 July. There will be three different types of paper: plenary papers delivered by invited speakers; panels consisting of four papers; and posters. A call for panels, papers and posters will be issued in May, with a deadline for submission of 1 July. There will be a drinks reception, a flying buffet, excursions, workshops and various cultural activities taking place throughout the Congress.

All practical information about registration, fees, and instructions for the submission of abstracts for the papers/panels will be available from the Congress website: the URL will be available in May 2018.

We look forward to welcoming you to London in July 2019.

MOUNT ALLISON UNIVERSITY
CRAKE DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN CLASSICS, 2018–2019

The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2018–2019.

The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who, at the time of taking up the fellowship, have completed all course and residential requirements for a Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.

The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to the end of April. In 2018–2010 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $31,500 (CDN), with an allowance of up to $3,500 (CDN) to cover moving and other research-associated expenses.

Applications may be made through email or post and should include a curriculum vitae, official transcripts and three letters of reference. The thesis supervisor should be asked to write concerning the subject of the thesis and the expected date for its final submission. Applicants should also send a statement regarding the progress of their doctoral studies, including their schedule for completion, and a 1–2 page synopsis of their thesis. FREDERICK AND JOAN WINTER STUDENT TRAVEL BURSARY (REMINDER)
BOURSE D’ÉTUDES ET DE VOYAGE FREDERICK ET JOAN WINTER (RAPPEL)

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs, Greek Fortifications (1971) and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), as well as a series of articles in the American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) entitled “Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I – IV.” His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.

Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter’s family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2018.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.

To apply, write to Dr Gerald Schaus (gschaus@wlu.ca) by 1 March 2018, including a curriculum vitae, an outline of the proposed research and an explanation for the need to travel for this research. Please arrange for two referees familiar with your work to send letters of support for your application to Dr Schaus.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD$2,000.

Ancien professeur d’histoire de l’art à l’Université de Toronto, Frederick Winter (1922–2011) a publié de nombreux travaux sur l’archéologie du monde classique. Il est connu surtout pour deux ouvrages, Greek Fortifications (1971) et Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), et pour une série d’articles dans l’American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) intitulée « Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I–IV ». L’Institut canadien en Grèce lance un appel à candidatures pour la Bourse d’études et de voyage Frederick et Joan Winter qui sera offerte pour un séjour à l’Institut au printemps ou à l’été 2018.

Les candidats doivent être citoyens canadiens ou immigrants reçus et inscrits dans un programme d’études supérieures ou postdoctorales. The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Homer and Dorothy Thompson Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2018 to 31 May 2019.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Homer and Dorothy Thompson Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$9,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

L'Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG) lance un appel à candidatures pour la bourse Homer et Dorothy Thompson qui sera offerte pour un séjour de neuf mois à Athènes du 1er septembre 2018 au 31 mai 2019.
