I would formally like to invite all university Classics departments and programmes in
Canada to consider hosting the Annual Meeting in May 2015. All interested
departments or programmes are asked to write briefly to the President (at
akeith@chass.utoronto.ca) as soon as possible and before April 15, 2012 at the latest to
indicate their willingness to host the Annual Meeting in 2015.
Council asks that potential hosts provide a brief rationale why their particular department/programme is interested in hosting the meeting and well placed to do so. Are there any factors which would make a meeting at their institution in the given year particularly appropriate? Would their university be willing to provide support (both financial and logistical) for such a venture? Are there suitable accommodations available (both on-campus residence rooms and moderately priced hotels) in easy reach of the proposed meeting location? Potential volunteers might usefully consult the Guidelines for Annual Meeting document (in English and in French) posted on the CAC/SCEC website.
Council plans to discuss possible locations for the 2015 Annual Meeting at its next Council meeting and to make a firm decision before the Annual Meeting in London in
May 2012 at the latest.
As President, I would be happy to discuss this matter informally with any department or programme prior to their making a formal expression of interest in hosting such a meeting. Please feel free to contact me at akeith@chass.utoronto.ca.

Dear Members of the CAC,
The Equity Committee is gathering data regarding the success rates of CAC members applying for SSHRC Standard Research Grants or for FQRSC Soutien à la relève scientifique (Quebec) for the 2005 to 2010 competitions (i.e. funded research begun in 2006 to 2011). In the case of collaborative projects, only the main researcher responsible for submitting the application is concerned here. To assist us, please take a few minutes to fill out this anonymous, short questionnaire and either mail or email it to Fanny Dolansky by April 6. The results will be analyzed and presented at the Annual General Meeting in May. If you have applied for more than one competition since 2005, please complete the questionnaire for each application you submitted.
Thank you,
On behalf of the Equity Committee,
Fanny Dolansky, President of the Women's Network
Patrick Baker, Vice-President, CAC

TRENT UNIVERSITY — DEPARTMENT OF ANCIENT HISTORY & CLASSICS
The Department of Ancient History & Classics at Trent University invites applications for three limited term positions, one of which is a 3 year recurring appointment, starting August 1, 2012, at the Assistant Professor level. All appointments are subject to budgetary approval.
Candidates should specify for which position(s) they are applying (LTA 1, LTA 2, and/or LTA 3, as described below); they may apply for more than one. Each limited-term instructor will be responsible for the equivalent of three courses per term; course codes ending in Y are two-term (24-week) courses and those ending in H are one-term (12-week) courses. Instructors will also contribute to Departmental service. A PhD by the time of appointment is expected.
LTA 1: This position covers the sabbatical and administrative leaves of a Classical historian and will be filled by a single candidate for three nine-month contracts, August 1, 2012-April 30, 2013; August 1, 2013-April 30, 2014, and August 1, 2014-April 30, 2015. We seek a dynamic candidate with an established record of excellence in research and a demonstrated commitment to the effective teaching of Classics sub-disciplines. Courses may vary from one year to the next; they will include a fourth-year senior seminar (that draws students into the instructor’s on-going research), preferably in an area of Greek or Roman history or an aspect of archaeology that addresses issues in Classical history;
ancient history and/or civilization at the second- and third-year levels; and Latin at all levels. Ability to teach ancient Greek would be considered an asset. In 2012-13, courses will be AHCL 2100Y (‘Introduction to Ancient History’), AHCL-ANTH-GEOG 2230H (‘Ancient City’), AHCL 4002H (senior seminar) and LATN 3000Y. This instructor will
also contribute two lectures per year to our foundation course, AHCL 1000Y (‘Trojan War’). Applicants for this position should include a topic proposal for the senior seminar and suggest works to be studied in LATN 3000Y, preferably involving both poetry and prose.
LTA 2: A nine-month limited-term appointment, to start August 1, 2012. This is a language & literature position, involving the teaching of AHCL 2305H (‘Ancient Greek Theatre’), GREK 3000Y, LATN 2000H, and LATN 2001H, and co-teaching our foundation course, AHCL 1000Y (‘Trojan War’). We particularly seek applications from candidates who are able to help in some capacity with our annual Conacher Players student drama production; possibilities range from the level of technical advisor to that of director, depending on the candidate’s experience and level of comfort.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. Applicants for this position should propose ancient works as topics for LATN 2001H and GREK 3000Y, the latter preferably involving both poetry and prose.
LTA 3: A nine-month limited-term appointment, to start August 1, 2012. This is a language & literature position, involving the teaching of AHCL 2350H (‘Greek Myths & Mythology’), GREK 1000H, GREK 1001H, LATN 1000H, LATN 1001H, and a third-year, literature-in-translation course. This instructor will also contribute two lectures to our
foundation course, AHCL 1000Y (‘Trojan War’). Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. Applicants for this position should also indicate their preferred third-year, in-translation course: ‘Love, Sex & Death’; ‘The Odyssey and its Reception’; or ‘Conventions of Ancient Greek Theatre’.
Applications should be submitted in electronic (PDF) format and include a cover letter (including specification of LTA 1, LTA 2, and/or LTA 3), a curriculum vitae, and documentation of teaching effectiveness; in addition, please arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent in PDF format.
Applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. EST on Friday, April 20, 2012. Please submit PDF-format applications to:
AHCL Personnel Committee, c/o Ms. Kathy Axcell, Secretary, Department of Ancient History and Classics, Champlain College, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.
