CCB Hiatus in May, reminder

This is a reminder that the CCB will go on hiatus for the month of May. I will be unavailable for the entire month, so there will be no regular issue OR any special issues. I may be able to send out a special April issue at the end of the month, especially since volume 15.8 was mailed out a few days early (see above). The Award of Merit Committee is pleased to announce that Professor Catherine Rubincam (University of Toronto at Mississauga) will be the second recipient of this award.  The award, which recognizes Professor Rubincam’s manifold and sustained services to Classical studies in Canada, will be presented at the Association’s annual general meeting on 13 May 2009.

RAPPORT DU CRSH SUR SES PRATIQUES D’ÉVALUATION PAR LES PAIRS

À l’automne 2008, le CRSH a demandé à un groupe d’experts indépendants d’examiner la qualité de l’ensemble de ses pratiques d’évaluation par les pairs, et ce, de la sélection des examinateurs jusqu’à l’élaboration des politiques. Composé d’experts internationaux dans le domaine de l’évaluation par les pairs, ce groupe avait pour mandat de s’assurer que le CRSH conserve sa place en tant que chef de file mondial quant à son expertise en matière d’évaluation des propositions de recherche. 

En décembre 2008, il a soumis son rapport final, intitulé Promouvoir l’excellence en recherche: Examen mené par un groupe d’experts international à l’égard des pratiques d’évaluation par les pairs au Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada, à la haute gestion du CRSH. Dans ce rapport, le groupe d’experts conclut que le processus d’évaluation par les pairs du CRSH « correspond aux pratiques exemplaires et aux normes internationales les plus élevées ». Il fait également une série de recommandations afin que le processus mis en place par le CRSH demeure viable, efficace et de calibre mondial.

Le groupe d’experts est arrivé à cette conclusion après avoir examiné des documents en profondeur, mené un sondage en ligne auprès des membres de la communauté des chercheurs en sciences humaines et interviewé plus de 50 évaluateurs, agents de programme et membres de la gestion du CRSH. Il a également pris en considération les systèmes d’évaluation par les pairs utilisés aux États-Unis, en Australie, en Angleterre et en Allemagne.

L’équipe de la haute gestion du CRSH étudie soigneusement les recommandations formulées dans ce rapport. Les conclusions qu’elle en tirera lui permettront de proposer un plan d’action au cours des prochains mois. Ce plan, dont la finalité sera d’augmenter le niveau de qualité du

système d’évaluation par les pairs du CRSH, sera mis en place dans un intervalle de 6 à 24 mois. 

Tous les membres de la SCEC profiteront d’un examen approfondi de ce rapport, puisqu’on y trouve beaucoup de renseignements sur les pratiques actuelles du CRSH à propos des bourses de maîtrise et doctorat, des bourses postdoctorales et des subventions ordinaires de recherche, avec quelques propositions pour modifier ces pratiques.  Le rapport est disponible sur le site-web du CRSH (http://www.sshrc.ca/site/about-crsh/publications/peer-pairs_f.pdf).

Les résultats des concours pour les bourses de maîtrise et doctorat, des bourses postdoctorales et des subventions ordinaires de recherche ne sont annoncés qu’aux individus et aux départments; les statistiques cumulatives du CRSH ne sont pas encore disponsibles. Le Conseil surveillera aussitôt que possible les résultats des concours qui concernent les chercheurs au domaine des Etudes Classiques au Canada. 

SSHRC REPORT ON ITS PEER-REVIEW PRACTICES

CAC members will recall that in the fall of 2008 SSHRC commissioned an independent Blue Ribbon Panel assessment of the quality of its entire peer-review practices, from selecting reviewers to developing policies. Aimed at ensuring SSHRC’s continued position as a world leader in the expert evaluation of proposals, the independent Blue Ribbon Panel comprised a group of international experts in peer review.

The Panel submitted its final report, Promoting Excellence in Research: An International Blue Ribbon Panel Assessment of Peer Review Practices at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to SSHRC management last December. The report concludes that SSHRC’s peer-review system is “up to the best practices and highest international standards,” while offering a list of recommendations aimed at ensuring that our processes remain sustainable, efficient and world-class.

The report’s conclusions were drawn from an extensive review of relevant documentation, an online survey of members of the humanities and social sciences community, and more than 50 interviews carried out with reviewers, program officers and SSHRC management. The panel also took into account experiences in the American, Australian, British and German peer-review systems.

SSHRC is giving careful consideration to the recommendations identified in the report. In the coming months it will develop an action plan based on our conclusions. The actions proposed will be aimed at further enriching the quality of SSHRC’s peer-review system, and will be implemented over six to twenty-four months.

CAC members may find it enlightening to read the Blue Ribbon report, as it contains much useful discussion of current SHHRC practices with regards to Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral fellowships and the Standard Research Grant competition, alongside its recommendations for change.   It is available on the SSRHC website at http://www.sshrc.ca/site/about-crsh/publications/peer-pairs_e.pdf.

The results of this year’s Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral fellowships and Standard Research Grant competition have been announced to applicants and universities, but no cumulative data is yet available from SSHRC. CAC Council will be monitoring the success rates of Classicists as soon as this material is made available.

Applications are invited for a 10-month sessional appointment at the Lecturer/Assistant Professor level effective August 1, 2009 in Ancient Greek History. This position is subject to budgetary approval.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes in Ancient Greek at the introductory and/or intermediate level, as well as intermediate level classes in Greek and Hellenistic history.  An ability to teach introductory level art history would be an asset.    Applicants should have completed the PhD or have the PhD in-hand and show competence in teaching, research and publication appropriate to their experience.  The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  A letter of application, complete and updated curriculum vitae, and three confidential letters of professional recommendation forwarded by the referees under separate cover to:

CAC Undergraduate Essay Contest 2009

The Undergraduate Essay Contests are designed to showcase the research of undergraduate students taking Classics courses at Canadian universities. Students do not need to be Classics majors to submit their work: essays written for any undergraduate course with classical content at a Canadian university during the previous academic year are eligible. Two separate competitions are held each year: a junior contest, for papers submitted by junior undergraduates in survey courses where no specialized knowledge of Classics is required, and a senior contest, for papers written by undergraduates in specialized upper-level courses in Classics. A separate set of prizes is awarded for each of these competitions.

Concours d'essais pour le 1er cycle, 2009

Les concours d'essais pour étudiants de premier cycle ont pour but de mettre en valeur les travaux de recherche d'étudiants qui suivent des cours de premier cycle en études classiques dans une université canadienne. Les participants ne doivent pas obligatoirement être inscrits dans un programme d'études classiques: tous les essais rédigés dans le cadre d'un cours ayant trait aux études classiques, dans une université canadienne, au cours de la dernière année scolaire, sont éligibles. Chaque année ont lieu deux concours distincts. Le concours de niveau junior récompense des étudiants de premier cycle pour des travaux rédigés dans le cadre de cours d'initiation, pour lesquels aucune connaissance spécifique dans le domaine des études classiques n'est requise; le concours de niveau senior prend en compte des travaux d'étudiants de premier cycle écrits dans le cadre de cours spécialisés en études classiques. Les prix sont attribués de façon indépendante pour chacun des deux concours. 


Rules

Essays may be submitted by either the student or the instructor. They may be up to 50 pages in length. Up to two separate essays may be submitted for any one student, but no individual will be eligible for more than one award in any particular year.

Essays should submitted as they were submitted for the course, without revisions or corrections (with the exception of typographical errors) and with no comments or corrections by the instructor. The cover page should contain only the title of the paper: nowhere in the essay proper should any information be offered that might identify the student, the instructor, or the institution. A separate sheet should be submitted with the name of the student, his/her institution, and the submitting instructor (if applicable).

Entries should also indicate whether the essay is to be judged in the junior or the senior contest. If you are not certain which category might be appropriate, please include a brief description of the course for which the essay was written.

Judging is based on both form and content. The winning essays in both contests must be well-written, clearly organized, and free from errors of grammar and syntax. In the junior contest, winners usually have demonstrated a solid understanding of the sources pertinent to their topic and have covered their chosen subject thoroughly. In the senior contest, winners are expected to have made good use of both ancient and modern sources and to have offered new insights on their chosen topic.

Other types of submissions (for example, original works of fiction, video productions, games) will also be considered should the adjudicators judge them appropriate. All such submissions must be based on and deal creatively with ancient source material.


Règlements

Les essais peuvent être soumis par les étudiants, ou par leur professeur. Les textes doivent compter au maximum 50 pages. Chaque étudiant peut soumettre jusqu'à deux essais différents, mais aucun concurrent ne sera récompensé plus d'une fois dans la même année. 

Les essais doivent être soumis tels qu'ils ont été présentés dans le cadre du cours, sans révision ou corrections (à l'exception des fautes typographiques), et sans commentaires ou corrections de la part du professeur. La page couverture ne doit contenir que le titre du travail : l'essai ne doit contenir aucune information permettant d'identifier l'étudiant, le professeur ou l'institution. Le nom de l'étudiant, son institution et le nom du professeur ayant soumis l'essai (s'il y a lieu) doivent Ítre fournis sur une feuille séparée. 

Ce document doit également indiquer si l'essai est soumis au concours de niveau junior ou senior. En cas de doute, veuillez inclure une brève description du cours pour lequel l'essai a été rédigé. 

Les travaux seront jugés à la fois sur la forme et sur le contenu. Les essais retenus pour les deux concours devront Ítre bien écrits, structurés de façon claire, et devront Ítre exempts d'erreurs grammaticales et syntaxiques. Les gagnants du concours de niveau junior des années passées ont démontré une compréhension approfondie des études pertinentes à leur sujet qui fut couvert de façon minutieuse. Les gagnants du concours de niveau senior devront avoir fait preuve d'un bon usage des sources, modernes comme anciennes, dans la rédaction de leur dissertation qui présentera un caractère innovant. 

Les autres types de travaux soumis (par exemple : récits de fiction originaux, productions vidéo, jeux) seront aussi pris en considération, à condition d'Ítre jugés appropriés par le jury. Le contenu des travaux de ce type devra s'appuyer sur des sources anciennes, et en traiter de façon créative.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning entries in both the junior and senior competition, and the winners will have the option of posting their entries on the CAC website.   First prize : $150; Second prize : $100; Third prize : $50

“REACTING TO THE PAST” ANNUAL SUMMER INSTITUTE AT BARNARD COLLEGE
College faculty and administrators are invited to participate in the ninth annual “Reacting to the Past” Institute at Barnard College (New York), June 11-14, 2009. 

“Reacting to the Past” (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles with “victory objectives” informed by seminal texts in the history of ideas. The curriculum seeks to draw students into the past, promote engagement with big questions in the humanities and sciences, and improve speaking, writing, and leadership skills. An alternative approach to general education, RTTP was honored with the 2004 Theodore Hesburgh Award (funded by TIAA-CREF) as the nation’s outstanding pedagogical innovation in undergraduate teaching and learning. 

Participants will learn about the curriculum by engaging in intensive two-day workshops on particular games, ranging from “The Threshold of Democracy: Athens in 403 B.C.” to “Acid Rain and the European Environment, 1979-89: The science, economics, politics, and philosophy of environmental protection.” In addition to game sessions, concurrent sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss issues and concerns related to the classroom experience, general education, assessment, and the problems and possibilities of the RTTP approach. 

This summer’s institute will include a “classical track,” in which participants can play both “The Threshold of Democracy: Athens in 403 B.C.” and “Beware the Ides of March: Rome in 44 B.C.E.” Gamemasters for the classical track are Carl A. Anderson (Michigan State University, ander100@msu.edu) and T. Keith Dix (University of Georgia, tkdix@uga.edu).
