Job Opening: Curriculum Advisor at Alberta Classical Academy

 
The Alberta Classical Academy is now hiring for the role of Curriculum Advisor to support the development of a classical liberal arts curriculum across our network of schools. The Alberta Classical Academy is a public charter school authority that began operating in 2022. In our third year, we have grown to serve 1,300 students across three campuses in Calgary and Edmonton. We strive for academic depth and vigour, and are focused on developing “the knowledge, virtues, and habits befitting free citizens.” Among our program’s distinct features are: a smartphone-free environment; the use of traditional pedagogy and teacher-led classrooms; a rich curriculum centred on classical and enduring works of literature, philosophy, and art; a focus on character and the nurturing of virtues; a culture of friendship and leisure (scholē); and an explicit commitment to the pursuit of truth, beauty, and wisdom. 
 
The Curriculum Advisor will support the development a variety of curriculum documents, guides, primary source anthologies, and other resources for use by classroom teachers across multiple disciplines. This position based in Calgary, AB. It is available on a full or part-time basis, depending on the skills and availability of the applicant. 
 
Responsibilities 
 
The Curriculum Advisor reports to the Chief Development Officer, and works to support classroom teachers and school administrators in delivering a rich classical curriculum. Their tasks may include the following: 
– Developing vertically and horizontally aligned curriculum maps across grades K-12; 
– Defining learning outcomes to be attained at each grade level and in each disciplines, and aligning these with the Alberta Programs of Study; 
– Assisting in the development “philosophy of disciplines” guides for teachers; 
– Identifying and cataloging resources to support the delivery of the curriculum; 
– Identifying and cataloging primary source materials; 
– Collecting, cataloging, and designing lesson plans; 
– Maintaining an internal database of curriculum documents and resources for teachers; 
– Producing other curriculum resources as requested; 
– Developing readers, anthologies, textbooks to fill resource gaps; 
– Providing or facilitating curriculum coaching for teachers, either individually or as a group. 
 
Qualifications 
 
The successful candidate should possess the following traits and habits of mind: 
– High degree of intellectual curiosity and polymathic tendencies spanning multiple academic disciplines; 
– Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with an ability to think at a both the systemic and granular levels 
– Sound philosophical instincts and heuristic principles; 
– Well-developed sense of intellectual, moral, and aesthetic discernment; 
– The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively; 
– Intellectual seriousness and depth, and a commitment to learning for its own sake; 
– Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders 
– A solid understanding of the classical liberal arts tradition, and of the ends it is meant to achieve; 
– A love of wisdom and a passion for truth; 
– A spirit of awe and reverence before the natural world
 
The following qualifications are considered an asset: 
– Teaching experience—whether at the primary, secondary, or post-secondary level 
– Experience in classical education 
– Experience in curriculum or textbook design and development; 
– A Master’s degree or higher in a relevant academic discipline

Option 1: How is a classical liberal arts education distinct from what is commonly offered in schools today? 
Option 2: Describe an author, philosopher, or a book that has shaped your understanding of education. 
Option 3: Choose any discipline (e.g. geometry, history, civics, music, Latin, human sexuality, outdoor education, etc.) and describe the philosophical and pedagogical approach that teachers should adopt in teaching it.
