Cancelled except for business pertaining to the Annual General Meeting

Statement from Prof. Allison Glazebrook, CAC President, March 15th 2020:

As a result of the impact of COVID-19 on the educational system in Canada and in particular the University of Victoria, the Classical Association of Canada and the Organizing Committee of the 2020 conference regret to announce that the 2020 conference in Victoria scheduled for May 6-8 is now cancelled. The CAC has stopped registration and will refund current registrants. The CAC and the conference organizers will inform members about revised plans for the conference in the next ten days. The CAC plans to hold an AGM in an alternative format for the election of new officers and the approval of the budget and so on. Details on the format of the AGM and the materials for that meeting will be circulated in early April.

President, CAC

Statement from Prof. Allison Glazebrook, CAC President, April 7th 2020:

Given the extraordinary circumstances, we, the executive, have decided on the following protocols for the Annual General Meeting. In order to fulfill item 5 of the constitution, “elect the officers of the Association, receive the Treasurer’s report, the Auditor’s report, the Secretary’s report and the Editors’ reports, and transact the general business of the Association”, there will be an electronic vote to elect the slate of nominees, accept the financial reports of the Association, Phoenix, and Mouseion, and approve motions. These documents will be posted on the web-page as they become available. All members will receive a notice of voting by May 8th and the voting will remain open until May 15th. The May edition of the Canadian Classical Bulletin (CCB) will also include brief reports from the officers of the Association and announce the 2020 Award recipients. These awards will then be presented at the AGM in May 2021 along with any awards for 2021.

After consideration of alternative formats for the cancelled conference, the Council of the Classical Association of Canada and the organizing committee have decided to move this year’s conference to May 2021 and reschedule the conferences at Laval University to May 2022 and at Saint Mary’s University to 2023. The cancellation of this year’s conference is a disappointment to all of us, but even more so for our colleagues at the University of Victoria, who worked so hard to organize the conference over the past year. With the current upheaval across Canadian campuses and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, it is not feasible to postpone the conference to the Fall of 2020 or offer a virtual alternative. We are most grateful to our colleagues at the University of Victoria for offering to host again next year and to our colleagues at Laval and Saint Mary’s Universities for accommodating this new schedule.

A book of abstracts for the 2020 conference will be published on-line and anyone on the current programme will have the opportunity to present the accepted paper or panel in May 2021 or submit a new paper for adjudication by the organizing committee. The 2021 conference will also be extended by a day to allow for additions to the programme.

We look forward to seeing you all in May 2021 at the University of Victoria for take-two. In the meantime, we hope you and yours stay well.
