Assistant Professor (1 Year Term), 2023-2024
The Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for a 1-year term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2023, subject to budgetary approval. This position may be renewed. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience as stipulated by the collective agreement between the University of Winnipeg and the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association. Applicants should have a completed Ph.D. in Classics or a related field in hand by the time of the appointment.
The successful candidate will teach 3.5 FCEs (i.e., 7 3-credit hour courses) across two or three academic terms from among the following: Greek Society; Roman Society; Classical Mythology; War, History, and Memory: Introduction to Classical Literature; History of the Roman Republic; and History of the Roman Empire. Candidates should also have an active research agenda in any field or subfield of Classical Studies (e.g., archaeology and material culture, philology, history, reception, etc.) that complements the department’s current research focuses and relates to the interests of our diverse student body. The members of the Department of Classics at the University of Winnipeg are collegial, committed to innovative approaches to teaching, and have a strong record of public outreach (e.g., New Directions in Classics [https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/classics/new-directions-in-classics-vi.html], the Skywalk Lecture series, etc.). In addition, the department as a whole has had significant success in receiving both internal and external (SSHRC) research awards. The University of Winnipeg is a predominantly undergraduate university with a diverse student body of 10,000 students located in downtown Winnipeg, a city of 800,000 people. It is home to the first civic art gallery in Canada (Winnipeg Art Gallery, across the street from the University), the only federal museum outside of Ottawa (Canadian Museum for Human Rights), a royal ballet, a vibrant music, theatre, and festival scene, and successful professional sports franchises. Winnipeg’s cost of living is low (https://www.economicdevelopmentwinnipeg.com/choose-winnipeg/live-here/cost-of-living ), commutes are generally short, and the city’s restaurant scene is thriving. Winnipeg has an international airport with direct flights major centres in Canada and the United States, and easy connections to the rest of the world. Winnipeg is also home to two classics departments (the other at the University of Manitoba), and a local chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. Between the two departments, over a dozen guest speakers are usually hosted in a given year.

The University of Winnipeg has a Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination Policy that requires all those coming to designated indoor campus spaces to provide proof they are fully vaccinated. The Policy was suspended effective May 2, 2022. However, prospective employees should know that the Policy may be reinstated in the future based on changing public health circumstances.
