Thanks to a generous donation from the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Ottawa Chapter), and the Parnassos Cultural Society of Ottawa, the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is proud to be able to offer the Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary. The bursary aims to support undergraduate students based at a Canadian university who have reason to travel to Greece.

This is a merit-based award which aims to promote the diversity of students involved in archaeological projects and/or study tours in Greece. Special consideration may be given to students applying from universities in Ottawa, the city where Dr. Tryphonas lived and worked for much of his professional career.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2025.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing undergraduate studies, and have a clear need to travel in Greece for participation in an archaeological project, to attend a summer program or study abroad experience, or to participate in some other academic activity that requires the student to be in Greece.

To apply, write to Dr. Angus Smith (personnel@cig-icg.gr) by 1 March 2025, including a cover letter that describes your rationale for traveling to Greece, a curriculum vitae, and an unofficial transcript. Please arrange for a referee familiar with your academic background to send a letter of support for your application to Dr. Smith.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies, the Canadian Institute in Greece, and the CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary (if received jointly, see Nota bene).

One bursary will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD $1,000. The award is designed primarily to cover local living expenses (accommodation, meals, etc.) as opposed to travel expenses.

Nota bene: This award, subject to the discretion of the selection committee, may be awarded in conjunction with the “CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary” which covers travel-related expenses.

Grâce à un don généreux de l’Institut canadien d’études méditerranéennes (section d’Ottawa) et de la Parnassos Cultural Society of Ottawa, l’Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG) est heureux d’offrir la bourse d’étude en Grèce Dr Leander Tryphonas. Cette bourse vise à soutenir les étudiants.es de premier cycle d’une université canadienne qui doivent effectuer un séjour en Grèce.

Il s’agit d’une bourse au mérite qui vise à encourager la diversité étudiante dans les projets archéologiques ou les voyages d’études en Grèce. Une attention particulière pourrait être accordée aux étudiants.es des universités d’Ottawa, la ville où le Dr Tryphonas a vécu et travaillé pendant la majeure partie de sa carrière professionnelle.

L’Institut lance donc un appel à candidatures pour la bourse d’étude en Grèce Dr Leander Tryphonas, pour un séjour qui aura lieu au printemps ou à l’été 2025.

La personne candidate doit être citoyenne canadienne ou immigrante reçue, poursuivre des études de premier cycle et démontrer clairement le besoin de voyager en Grèce pour participer à un projet archéologique, à une école d’été ou à toute autre activité universitaire qui nécessite une présence en Grèce.

Pour poser sa candidature, il suffit d’écrire au Dr Angus Smith (personnel@cig-icg.gr) avant le 1er mars 2025, en joignant une lettre de motivation décrivant les raisons pour lesquelles vous souhaitez vous rendre en Grèce, un curriculum vitae, et un relevé de notes non officiel. Veuillez prendre les dispositions nécessaires pour qu’une personne connaissant votre parcours académique envoie une lettre d’appui à votre candidature à M. Smith.

Dans les trois mois suivants la fin du séjour, le/la bénéficiaire de la bourse doit envoyer au président du comité des bourses de l’ICG un bref rapport décrivant le travail accompli.

Dans toute publication résultant de travaux de recherche effectués grâce à cette bourse, la personne bénéficiaire doit mentionner l’Institut canadien d’études méditerranéennes, l’Institut canadien en Grèce et la bourse de voyage pour étudiants ICEM-CIG (si celle-ci a été obtenue conjointement, voir Nota bene).

Une bourse sera offerte chaque année, pour un montant total de 1 000 dollars canadiens. Cette bourse est principalement destinée à couvrir les frais de subsistance sur place (logement, repas, etc.) plutôt que les frais de transport.

Nota bene : Ce prix, à la discrétion du comité de sélection, peut être attribué conjointement avec la « Bourse de voyage pour étudiants ICEM-CIG » qui couvre les dépenses liées au voyage.
