Assistant Professor of Classics – Mount Holyoke College, Department of Classics and Italian
The Department of Classics and Italian at Mount Holyoke College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of Classics. The start date is July 1, 2025 and the teaching load is four courses per year. We invite applications from qualified candidates who hold a Ph.D. or ABD in Classics or a related discipline capable of teaching with distinction ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels as well as courses in English that will contribute to the curriculum of the department and the College, such as those in the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world.
Area of research specialization is open. Interdisciplinary approaches that expand the traditional boundaries of Classics or explore contacts between Greece/Rome and other cultures of the ancient world are particularly welcome. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, advising, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity of the department and the larger campus community. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of strong teaching at the undergraduate level and experience mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. In addition to the teaching load, expectations for the successful candidate include maintaining an active research program, mentoring and advising students, both department majors and pre-majors, and service within the department and in the larger college community.
Candidates will be required to submit, in addition to CV and letter of application, three statements concerning (1) teaching philosophy, (2) research interests, and (3) a statement about mentoring a diverse student body. Candidates should submit these materials by December 15, 2024. Reference letters will be requested at a later date in the process. Questions may be addressed to the department coordinator, Denise Falk.
