Assistant Professor, Tenure Track: Roman Archaeology

 

Job: Assistant Professor in Roman Archaeology, University of Alberta

 

The Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Roman Archaeology with a starting date of July 1, 2023.

 

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent in Classical Archaeology or a related discipline, with a primary focus on the material culture of the Roman world, in any region and any period between the Early Iron Age and Late Antiquity. ABD applicants with a strong expectation of completing the PhD before July 1, 2023, may also be considered.

 

Applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence in research and teaching.  Responsibilities for the position include maintaining an active research program, teaching at all levels in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and graduate student supervision. The regular teaching load is four courses per year, and the ability to teach broadly in Classics is a requirement for the position. Fieldwork experience is required, and applicants should demonstrate the potential to develop and direct an archaeological field school. Familiarity with current developments in archaeological theory and practice is expected, along with proficiency in languages, ancient and modern, as relevant to the applicant’s research area. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong interdisciplinary outlook who can contribute to our undergraduate Certificate in Archaeology (offered jointly with the Department of Anthropology).

 

Founded in 1908, the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s largest and most-respected research universities. Classics was one of the founding disciplines at the university, and the department has a distinguished record of over fifty years of excellence in archaeological research. The department is home to the W.G. Hardy Collection of Ancient Near Eastern and Classical Antiquities, and our faculty and students have conducted site excavations in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia. The department runs regular spring/summer field schools and offers MA and PhD degrees in Classical Archaeology.
