Assistant Professor, Tenure Track: Latin Historiography and Roman Culture

The Department of Classics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an Assistant Professor in Latin Historiography and Roman Culture for a tenure-track appointment. The area of specialization is open. We are looking for someone who has the background and interest to teach graduate seminars and direct dissertations in Latin historiography and to work collaboratively with colleagues and students in Graeco-Roman historiography more generally. We welcome applications from candidates whose work also includes one or more of the following: colonialisms and imperialisms; political theory; rhetoric and political discourse; race and ethnicity in classical antiquity and its receptions; ancient slavery; and gender roles and family relations. We seek a scholar whose research embraces multi-disciplinary approaches to Roman cultural, intellectual, and political history and who could contribute to the department’s combined strengths in philology and archaeology. This position would complement existing faculty strengths in Greek prose, historiography, and history of religions, and support the department’s long-standing research emphasis in areas of Greek and Roman historiography and rhetoric.

Applicants should demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and a commitment to teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Preference will be given to those with a Ph.D. in Classics or a related discipline in hand at the time of application. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an Equal Opportunity employer that welcomes all to apply. We particularly encourage applications from women, BIPOC, veterans, LGBTQ+, individuals with disabilities, and other people from historically and systemically marginalized groups. Applicants apply online at https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/240990, uploading a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a research statement (as an ‘optional document’), a teaching statement, a statement on contributions to diversity and inclusion, and the names and contact information of four people who will write letters of recommendation. For full consideration, applications should be received by November 2, 2022. Referees will be contacted with instructions for submitting their letters online. E-mail inquiries should be addressed to: James Rives, Chair, Latin Historiography Search Committee (jbrives@email.unc.edu). The Department website is https://classics.unc.edu/.
