Three-Year Lecturer with an Emphasis on Medical Terminology, UBC, 2022-23

Three-Year Lecturer with an Emphasis on Medical Terminology

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies is seeking applications for a three-year Lecturer position to commence July 1, 2022. We seek a candidate to teach a range of course sections with a primary focus on Medical Terminology. The position involves teaching 24 credits (eight 3-credit equivalent courses, two of which will be taught in a summer session), and participating in departmental service, events and initiatives.

In accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association, Lecturer positions at UBC are appointments without review (i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service. This position will entail a probationary first year.

The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to teaching, lead multiple in-person and online sections of a large-scale Medical Terminology course, and teach undergraduate Latin. The successful candidate may also be asked to teach in their specialty areas, which may include a field of specialization not currently represented within the Department. As the Department transitions to becoming a Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies, these courses may include courses on populations that fall outside of the traditional study of the classical world.

The successful candidate must have a completed Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a related field. We welcome candidates who will complement the existing strengths of the Department and engage with diverse approaches in teaching. We look for candidates who have a demonstrated track record of advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.

Enquiries may be made to the Head of the Department of CNERS, Dr. Leanne Bablitz, at cners.assistant@ubc.ca.

The deadline for the receipt of applications is March 31st, 2022. Applicants should apply only through the CNERS’ Internal Resources website at: https://cner.air.arts.ubc.ca/job-opportunities/three-year-lecturer-with-a-primary-emphasis-on-medical-terminology/

For this application you will need to submit the following documents (max. size 15 MB):

  1. A letter of application
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. A statement of teaching philosophy and interests (1-2 pages)
  4. Evidence of teaching excellence or potential for excellence (max. 5 pages)
  5. A statement about your experience working with a diverse student body and your contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion (1-2 pages)

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to arrange to have three confidential letters of reference sent directly by their referees (please warn your referees of the possibility beforehand – the turn around time will be short) and more extensive evidence of teaching excellence or potential for excellence (including but not limited to student evaluations and/or peer assessments, and an undergraduate course syllabus). Interviews will be conducted through Zoom.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Given the uncertainty caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, applicants must be prepared to conduct interviews remotely if circumstances require. A successful applicant may be asked to consider an offer containing a deadline without having been able to make an in-person visit to campus if travel and other restrictions are still in place.

Information about the Department is available on the web at: http://www.cnrs.ubc.ca/.
