MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY AND LOCAL IDENTITIES: FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO NIGERIA AND GHANA
DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS, MARCH 7–9, 2019

From Luke Roman

This conference, based on the collaboration of classicists at Memorial University (Canada), the University of Ibadan (Nigeria), and the University of Ghana, explores the presence of classical antiquity in different cultural traditions and geographical settings at the intersection of the local and the global. While Classics has become more global in perspective, scholarly networks on the practical level still remain highly constrained by regional, and sometimes national, boundaries. One major focus of this project will be to generate dialogue around ways of confronting those boundaries with the goal of creating a truly global Classics through the interchange of ideas and the mobility of students and researchers. The conference, supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Connection Grant, as well as internal funding from the Scholarship in the Arts and the Memorial University Conference Fund, is part of a larger project entitled, “The Place of the Classics: Receptions of Greco-Roman Antiquity from Newfoundland to Nigeria” (Collaborators: Folake Onayemi, Department of Classics, University of Ibadan; Greg Walsh, Rooms Provincial Archives).

Keynote presenters: Justine McConnell, King's College, London; Folake Onayemi, University of Ibadan

For all inquiries, please contact Luke Roman, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Classics, Memorial University: romanl@mun.ca.

CFP: APPROACHES AND METHODS IN USING COIN EVIDENCE
ORGANIZED BY THE NUMISMATIC INTEREST GROUP OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF AMERICA
FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AIA, 2–5 JANUARY 2020, WASHINGTON DC

From Martin Beckmann

From the ancient economy to the reconstruction of lost buildings or the practice of funerary rituals, the evidence of coinage has the potential to make important contributions to an extremely wide range of topics in the study of the ancient world. Because these topics are so varied and coins themselves are multivalent, the application of coin evidence presents numerous methodological challenges. This call seeks papers focussed on approaches and methodology in using coin evidence: these may include new approaches or methods, the application of proven methods to new or unusual bodies of material, or comparison and evaluation of different methodologies. All papers should make an original contribution to the field and the nature of this contribution should be explicitly stated in the abstract.

Please send an abstract of no more than 500 words to Martin Beckmann (beckmam@mcmaster.ca) by February 23, 2019, in order to allow time for anonymous peer review. Papers will be 15–20 minutes, and all presenters will have to be AIA members in good standing at the time of the meeting. Please distribute this call for papers to anyone you think may be interested in submitting a proposal.

CANADIAN INSTITUTE IN GREECE / INSTITUT CANADIEN EN GRECE
FREDERICK AND JOAN WINTER STUDENT TRAVEL BURSARY
BOURSE D’ÉTUDES ET DE VOYAGE FREDERICK ET JOAN WINTER

From / De Gerry Schaus

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs, Greek Fortifications (1971) and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), as well as a series of articles in the American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) entitled “Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I – IV.” His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.

Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter's family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2019.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.

To apply, write to Dr Gerald Schaus (gschaus@wlu.ca) by 1 March 2019, including a curriculum vitae, an outline of the proposed research and an explanation for the need to travel for this research. Please arrange for two referees familiar with your work to send letters of support for your application to Dr Schaus.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD$2,000.

The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture. In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and The Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of $9,000 and free accommodations in the CIG hostel for the period of the fellowship.

Applications should be postmarked before March 1, 2019, and should include a curriculum vitae, a description of the planned program of research, and three letters of reference. These should be sent to:
