MARTIN FOSTER KILMER
May 23, 1943 – November 5, 2018

From the Editor

Bruce Robertson informs the Association of the passing of Martin Kilmer. I am reproducing excerpts from the obituary which appeared on the website of the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards, Nova Scotia:

Martin Foster Kilmer was born in Arlington, Virginia. He died at home in East River Point, Nova Scotia,on the evening of Monday, November 5, 2018 due to metastatic bladder cancer. He had a journey with this disease that started in the spring of 2015. Chemotherapy and surgery definitely slowed him down for a time. He was still busy recovering his strength when in the spring of 2018 he found out the cancer had recurred and was widespread in his body. He was excited to try the promising treatment using immunotherapy. Alas, it did not work out well for Martin.

He was trained as an archeologist and was retired from the Department of Classics and Religious Studies of the University of Ottawa since 2004. He had wished to be an archeologist from the age of four! He completed a BA in Classical Studies at Boston College. He was awarded a Marshall Scholarship which allowed him to pursue an MA Honours in Greek and Latin at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. After starting his teaching career at the University of Ottawa, Martin pursued a PhD in Classical Archeology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. He immensely enjoyed teaching and found supervising graduate students the most gratifying part of his career in the latter years of his profession. His main academic work was completing his book Greek Erotica on Attic Red-Figure Vases (London: Duckworth) in 1993. He published many journal articles as well.

CFP: WOMEN'S NETWORK – PANELS AT THE CAC ANNUAL CONFERENCE
APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS: RÉSEAU DES FEMMES – SÉANCES AU CONGRÈS ANNUEL DE LA SCÉC

From/De Kathy Simonsen

The Women’s Network of the CAC invites submissions for two panels:

  • Representations of Greek and Roman women: reception in film and modern media

Submissions may include, but are not limited to, explorations of the modern representations of ancient women of every status (goddess to slave) as well as the reception of ancient representations of women in film and other media.

  • How to engage with difficult material

Submissions may include, but are not limited to course and syllabus development, social media, and feminist pedagogy.

We warmly encourage all scholars and graduate students who are interested in these topics to apply. The Women's Network is a loose-knit group of scholars and students who are interested in the advancement of scholarship on ancient gender, and support women's academic careers in Classical Studies. The requirements for participation are 1) membership in the CAC and 2) graduate students should obtain a letter of support from their supervisors along with the abstract.

Please submit abstracts of 300 words with relevant bibliography by Monday, January 15th 2019 to Emily Varto, Women's Network Secretary (e.varto@dal.ca) and to the conference email address (cac.scec2019@gmail.com). Please indicate in the cover letter whether you would like to have your abstract considered for the regular sessions, if it is not included in the Women’s Network panel.

A NEW CAC WEBSITE
NOUVEAU SITE WEB DE LA SCÉC

From the Editor/ Du rédacteur

If you have clicked on some of the links above, you may have noticed that the website has a new look and, more importantly, loads much faster. For the time being, the old site is still working, but it will soon be entirely deactivated.

I would appreciate if you, dear reader, visited as many pages as possible and reported any problem that you can find, including broken links, typos, etc. I hope the Local Representatives and Department Chairs will also look at the informations most relevant to your department or programme and report any changes to be made. Pages that you might want to look at include "Classics programs in Canada", "Graduate Programs in Canada", "CAC Local Representatives" and, if you're an organizer or adjudicator of one of the competitons, the "Scholarships and Competitions" pages.

CANADIAN INSTITUTE IN GREECE / INSTITUT CANADIEN EN GRECE
LEIPEN FELLOWSHIP / BOURSE LEIPEN

From / De Gerry Schaus

The Canadian Institute in Greece invites applications for The Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship to be held in Athens, Greece, from 1 September, 2019 to 31 May, 2020

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

In addition to his or her studies, the Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. The nature of this work is to be determined in consultation with the Director. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow's research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture. In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and The Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of $9,000 and free accommodations in the CIG hostel for the period of the fellowship.

Applications should be postmarked before March 1, 2019, and should include a curriculum vitae, a description of the planned program of research, and three letters of reference. These should be sent to:

Professor Gerald P. Schaus, Chair
Personnel Committee, CIG – ICG
