From Reyes Bertolín Cebrián

This is the formal call for papers for the Annual Conference of the Classical Association of Canada. The organizers of the conference welcome abstracts of a maximum of 300 words on any classical topic. The deadline for all submissions is January 15, 2018.

All abstracts should be submitted as Word files to the conference email address: cac.scec2018@gmail.com. For individual presenters, please include your name and the term “abstract CAC 2018” in the subject heading. In the body of the letter, include your full name, affiliation, contact information and paper title. Do not include your name in the abstract but please make sure that the title of the paper on the abstract and the title on the cover letter are the same.

The conference organizers invite proposals for panels. Panels should consist of three to four papers. The panel organizer should submit all abstracts for the panel together along with a summary of the panel at the same time.

Finally, graduate students should include a letter of support from their supervisors along with the abstract.

Payment of conference and banquet fees can be made starting early in the new year (instructions will follow). Payment will be considered as registration.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Calgary!

Representations of Widows and Divorcées in Ancient Greece and Rome

The Women’s Network / Réseau des Femmes of the CAC / SCÉC invites submissions for two panels:

  1. Representations of Widows and Divorcées in Ancient Greece and Rome
Submissions may include, but are not limited to, explorations of the status and roles of single women, of the social and economic implications of widowhood and divorce as represented in Greco-Roman art, literature, historiography, or rhetoric.
  2. Teaching Women in Antiquity
Submissions may include, but are not limited to course and syllabus development, social media, teaching sensitive subjects, and feminist pedagogy.

We warmly encourage all scholars and graduate students who are interested in these topics to apply. The Women's Network is a loose-knit group of scholars and students who are interested in the advancement of scholarship on ancient gender, and support women's academic careers in Classical Studies. The requirements for participation are 1) membership in the CAC and 2) graduate students should include letters of support from their supervisors along with the abstracts.

Please submit abstracts of 300 words with relevant bibliography by Monday, January 15th, 2018 to Lisa Hughes, Women's Network Secretary (lahughes@ucalgary.ca) and to the conference email address (cac.scec2018@gmail.com).

CFP: GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE
ENTERTAINMENT AND THE EXPRESSION OF IDENTITY IN GRECO-ROMAN ANTIQUITY
BROCK UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS, FEBRUARY 24, 2018

From Helen Hsu

The Department of Classics at Brock University invites abstract submissions for the upcoming graduate student conference: Entertainment and the Expression of Identity in Greco-Roman Antiquity.

Keynote Speaker: Alison Keith (University of Toronto)

All abstracts should be under 300 words sent to brock.gc.2018@gmail.com.

The deadline for submissions is December 20, 2017. Successful submissions will be notified by January 15, 2018.

In an increasing globalized world, identity has become vital to the understanding of the structures of society and the role of the individual. The exploration of identity in an ancient context allows for a more comprehensive view of self-perception and expression. Entertainment and spectacle serve as venues for the expression of identity, as can be seen through literary, historical, and/or archaeological evidence.

  • Questions of gender identity and fluidity in sport and performance
  • Theatrical performances and performance space
  • Poetry, tragedy, comedy, epic, oratory
  • Festivals
  • Materiality of theatre
  • Archaeology of spectacle, props, and depictions of performance
  • Athletics (sport and entertainment based competition)
  • Topics of identity: community, class, ethnicity, language, culture, gender
  • Reception of performance

CFP: ASSOCIATION OF ANCIENT HISTORIANS ANNUAL MEETING
COLLEGE WILLIAM & MARY, WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA, APRIL 19–21, 2018

From John Donahue

We seek papers that raise broader issues and themes that will engage all AAH attendees regardless of their primary specialization. As always with the AAH, all sessions are plenary. Papers will be 20 minutes in length, with time for discussion.

Please send abstracts (.pdf or .docx) of no more than 500 words to aahmeeting2018@gmail.com by Monday, December 4, 2017. Limited references may be provided in-text only; no bibliographies please. Name your submission file in a way that indicates the panel to which you are applying.
We anticipate holding sessions on the following themes:

•             Travel in Ancient History
Recent decades have seen a growth of interest in the study of travel in antiquity, a topic that is integral to geography and cartography and was itself an important strand in many literary genres. This panel will attempt to draw together the threads of this trend by examining the phenomenon of travel in antiquity from as broad a range of perspectives as possible. Some of the topics that papers might address are the logistics of ancient travel, cartographical tools that helped guide travel, the role of travel in historical and biographical events, the role of travel in interstate politics and economy, travel as a means of acquiring social capital and defining identities, ideologies of travel and their relation to reality, travel and pilgrimage in the practice of ancient religions, the historiography of travel, and travel as an element of historiographical methodology.

•             Colonialism and Ancient Mediterranean Religions
Historical and cultural studies over the last few decades have embraced the study of colonialism in the ancient world. Theoretical approaches to this concept have included colonial and post-colonial theory, empire theory, as well as ethnicity and other types of identity studies. The impact of colonialism on religious practices of the ancient Mediterranean world, however, has not yet been thoroughly explored. Questions to be considered in this panel may include the following. How are the religious practices and beliefs of a colonizing state viewed by the indigenous population and vice versa? To what degree are the religious practices of the colonizing state affected by indigenous practices? How do the religious practices of a colony relate to those of its “mother” state? Is there evidence for “resistance” to colonialism in religious practice? This panel aims to bring together scholars of religion, history, philology, and archaeology to explore case studies and theoretical models for understanding the impact of colonialism on ancient Mediterranean religions.

•             Ancient Democracy
We seek papers that explore all aspects of ancient democracy. Topics might include (but are not limited to) the use of non-literary sources, such as epigraphy and papyri, to understand ancient political systems, the evolution of democracy in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, or the intersection of democracy and economics. Papers that focus on areas and time periods beyond the scope of Classical Athenian democracy are especially welcome.

•             Food, Drink and Identity
In recent years scholarly contributions in the area of ancient food culture have begun to provide fresh perspectives on social, political, military and religious identity in the Greco-Roman world. We seek papers that will continue to build upon these recent advances by viewing ancient food, drink and identity through a wide interpretative lens, from the Greek Bronze Age to the Late Roman Empire, including the ancient Near East. Comparative approaches with other cultures and time periods will be especially welcome, as will be papers that treat the topic through any number of sources, including, but not limited to, historiographical, inscriptional, legal and archaeological.

•             New Directions in Achaemenid Persian Studies
The study of the Achaemenid Persian empire has grown into a thriving field of ancient history, with fruitful connections to related disciplines including Assyriology, Egyptology, Judaica, and Greek history. This panel seeks to stimulate conversations on the future of Achaemenid Studies, and welcomes papers on new evidence, approaches, and projects of importance to the field. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the evidence of the Persepolis archives, Babylonian temple archives, the archaeology and art history of the Achaemenid empire, and the textual evidence for Persia’s relations with Mediterranean neighbors.

•             Imperial Encounters in Ancient Anatolia
Ancient Anatolia was a meeting place of empires, the site of complex encounters between the political, cultural, religious, and economic systems of foreign conquest-states and diverse local populations.  This panel will explore the interactions between imperial powers and the people and landscapes of Anatolia in the longue durée, and welcomes papers on aspects of this theme from the Hittite Bronze Age to the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman eras.

•             Archaeology and Epigraphy
Recent years have witnessed a sea-change in the way we access and make use of inscriptions from antiquity – from the digitization of material (e.g. The Herculaneum Graffiti Project), to mapping (Imperium Romanum on Googlemaps), to crowd-sourcing that helps produce critical editions (the Ancient Lives project). This panel invites submissions that employ or publicize new approaches to inscriptions, illustrating the benefit of new methodologies and practices. We also invite interdisciplinary papers, especially archaeological inquiries that provide context on the display, meaning, and function of inscriptions as monuments.

Call for Posters: This year’s AAH meeting will also have space and time set aside for posters. Please send abstracts as above.

For more information email aahmeeting2018@gmail.com or visit the website.

FIRST NOTICE – THE ELEVENTH CELTIC CONFERENCE IN CLASSICS
UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS 11–14 JULY 2018
PREMIER APPEL –XIe CELTIC CONFERENCE IN CLASSICS
UNIVERSITY DE ST-ANDREWS, 11–14 JUILLET 2018

From Sian Lewis

The 11th Celtic Conference in Classics will be held at the University of St Andrews from 11-14 July 2018. Suggestions are now invited, from established scholars anywhere in the world, for panels on any scholarly theme centred on ancient Greece or Rome.

The CCC by tradition consists of a number of panels running in parallel and on well-defined themes. Many panels in the past have given rise to published collective volumes, reflecting the conference’s commitment both to accomplished scholarship and to coherence around the advertised theme of each panel. Every panel has around 15 hours available for lectures and discussion, spread over the three days of the event. Most panels consist of 12–15 speakers, though small panels (8–10 speakers) are also acceptable. Speakers are usually given 40 minutes + 10 minutes of discussion, though often a panel contains a few shorter presentations.

Scholars who propose panels, to be chaired by themselves or immediate colleagues, may be asked to liaise with the organisers from time to time on recruitment of speakers.

The languages of the CCC are English and French.

Suggestions for panels should be submitted by 1st December 2017. Please send proposals to Sian Lewis (sl50@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Organising committee:
  — Douglas Cairns (douglas.cairns@ed.ac.uk)
  — Anton Powell (powellanton@btopenworld.com)
  — Sian Lewis (sl50@st-andrews.ac.uk)

::::::::: ::::::: ::::: ::: : ::: ::::: ::::::: :::::::::

FREDERICK AND JOAN WINTER STUDENT TRAVEL BURSARY
BOURSE D’ÉTUDES ET DE VOYAGE FREDERICK ET JOAN WINTER

From/De Gerry Schaus

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs, Greek Fortifications (1971) and Studies in Hellenistic Architecture (2006), as well as a series of articles in the American Journal of Archaeology (1976–1982) entitled “Tradition and Innovation in Doric Design I – IV.” His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.

Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter’s family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.

The Institute therefore invites applications for the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary to be held during the spring or summer of 2018.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.

To apply, write to Dr Gerald Schaus (gschaus@wlu.ca) by 1 March 2018, including a curriculum vitae, an outline of the proposed research and an explanation for the need to travel for this research. Please arrange for two referees familiar with your work to send letters of support for your application to Dr Schaus.

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD$2,000.
