This is the formal call for papers for the Annual Conference of the Classical Association of Canada.

The organizers of the conference welcome abstracts of a maximum of 300 words on any classical topic. The deadline for all submissions is January 15, 2017.

All abstracts should be submitted as PDF files to the conference email address: cac2017@mun.ca. For individual presenters, please include your name and the term “abstract CAC 2017” in the subject heading. In the body of the letter, include your full name, affiliation, contact information and paper title. Do not include your name in the abstract but please make sure that the title of the paper on the abstract and the title on the cover letter are the same.

The conference organizers invite proposals for panels. Panels should consist of three to four papers. The panel organizer should submit all abstracts for the panel together along with a summary of the panel at the same time.

The Women’s Network of the CAC invites abstracts on the topic of “Women and Work”. Anyone interested in submitting an abstract for the Women’s Network panel should consult the Women’s Network website (https://womensnetworkcac.wordpress.com) for further details about the panel. When submitting an abstract for this panel, presenters are requested to send the abstract both to the conference email address (cac2017@mun.ca) and to Kathryn Simonsen (kathryns@mun.ca), the Women’s Network secretary. Please indicate in the cover letter whether you would like to have your abstract considered for the regular sessions if it is not included in the Women’s Network panel.

Finally, graduate students should include a letter of support from their supervisors along with the abstract.

Payment of conference and banquet fees can be made starting early in the new year (instructions will follow). Payment will be considered as registration.

Le comité organisateur du prochain Congrès annuel de la SCÉC lance une invitation formelle aux membres à soumettre leurs propositions de communication sur tout sujet concernant l’antiquité classique. Les propositions ne doivent pas dépasser 300 mots et devront parvenir aux organisateurs au plus tard le 15 janvier 2017.

Veuillez envoyer votre proposition en format PDF à l’adresse cac2017@mun.ca. Pour une présentation individuelle, prière d’indiquer votre nom suivi de « proposition SCEC 2017 » dans l’objet du message. Dans le corps du message, indiquez votre nom complet, votre affiliation, vos coordonnées et le titre de votre communication. Nous vous prions de ne pas inscrire votre nom sur la proposition de communication. Pour éviter toute erreur d’identification, assurez-vous que le titre de votre communication soit identique à celui inscrit dans le corps du message.

Les propositions de sessions thématiques (« panels ») sont aussi les bienvenues. Elles devraient consister en trois ou quatre communications. L’organisateur d’une session thématique devrait soumettre toutes ses propositions de communication en bloc avec une brève description du thème de la session.

Le Réseau des femmes de la SCÉC accueillera avec plaisir les propositions sur le thème « Les femmes et le travail ». Les personnes intéressées sont invitées à consulter le site du Réseau à l’adresse https://womensnetworkcac.wordpress.com. Veuillez soumettre simultanément toute proposition de communication pour cette séance thématique au comité organisateur (cac2017@mun.ca) et à Kathryn Simonsen (kathryns@mun.ca), secrétaire du Réseau. Dans la lettre d’accompagnement, prière d’indiquer si vous souhaitez que votre proposition soit tout de même considérée pour une session régulière au cas où elle ne serait pas retenue pour la séance du Réseau.

Les étudiants aux cycles supérieurs doivent joindre à leur proposition une lettre de recommandation de leur directeur de recherche.

Le paiement des frais d’inscription au congrès et au banquet pourront être effectués à partir de janvier 2017 ; la procédure à suivre sera communiquée prochainement. Le paiement servira de preuve d’inscription.

RAPPORT DU COMITÉ D’ATTRIBUTION DES BOURSES DE LA SCÉC, 2016

Congratulations to the following award recipients:

1. Emma McPhee (University of New Brunswick) is the winner of the Desmond Conacher Scholarship, a $2,500 award to assist and encourage young scholars entering graduate studies in Classics.
2. Margaret-Anne Gillis (Barrie Central Collegiate, Barrie, Ontario) is the winner of the Grace Irwin Award of $500, presented to secondary school teachers of Latin, Greek and Classical Civilization seeking to upgrade their abilities.
3. Caitlin Hines (University of Toronto) won the Graduate Student Presentation Prize of $100 for delivering the best paper at the annual meeting (Laval University): “Ekphrasis and the Mind’s Ear: The Play of Sound in the Aspis.” Sandra Fleury (University of Montreal) received honourable mention for her paper “Entre paroxysme sonore et visuel: les cas de Déméter et Dionysos.”

I would like to thank Mark Joyal, Chair of Awards Committee (2015–16), for overseeing the adjudication of these awards.

Margaret-Anne Gillis (Barrie Central Collegiate, Barrie, Ontario) a gagné la Bourse Grace-Irwin (500$), destinée à récompenser un(e) professeur(e) de latin, de grec ancien ou de civilisation classique au niveau secondaire et qui souhaite mettre à jour ses compétences par diverses activités comme un cours de perfectionnement ou un voyage pour visiter un musée ou une exposition.
3. GRAMMATICAL TREEBANK ANALYSIS FOR TEACHING AND RESEARCH
WORKSHOP IN TORONTO

"Grammatical Treebank Analysis for Teaching and Research" is a free two-day workshop sponsored by the Perseids Project, January 4–5th, 2017, 9am-5pm

This workshop aims to present some of the work currently being done in digital pedagogy for classical studies. As the field of classical studies continues to evolve, technology is playing an even larger role both in educating a new generation of scholars and in opening new approaches to data-driven humanities research.

The workshop will include hands-on seminars on how to use the tools available via Perseids, in particular the Alpheios Translation Alignment editor and the Arethusa Treebank editor. Treebanking (morpho-syntactic diagramming) allows a user to identify all the dependency relationships in a sentence as well as the morphology of each word. Translation alignments allow a user to identify corresponding words between an original text and its translation. With both methods, the resulting data is automatically compiled in an xml file which can be further queried for research.

Participants should plan on attending all sessions of the two day workshop, from 9AM-5PM on January 4th and 5th. Participation is open to college professors, high school teachers, and graduate students.Participants should bring laptop computers. Since we will be working in Latin and Greek, participants should have a basic knowledge of either language. Wifi will be provided as well as coffee breaks and lunch. Participation is free, but seats are limited to 40.

The workshop will be led by Marie-Claire Beaulieu (Tufts University), Tim Buckingham (Perseids Project), Vanessa Gorman (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), and Robert Gorman (University of Nebraska-Lincoln).
