CALL FOR PAPERS (PRELIMINARY NOTICE)
METHODOLOGIES IN ANCIENT MATERIAL CULTURE
UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG, OCTOBER 2–4, 2015

From Allison Surtees

In recent decades there has been a dramatic shift in studies of ancient material culture away from the long-established avenues of scholarship that prioritised the identification of objects by renowned ancient artists towards a contextualised assessment of the ancient record. The function of antiquities, their context and their interpretation as part of a wider assemblage of material is now a focus of attention. This conference will explore the different aspects of these issues, and the confirmed keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Marlowe, author of Shaky Ground: Context, Connoisseurship and the History of Roman Art (London, 2013).

We invite proposals for papers on new methodological approaches to material and visual culture from the Bronze Age to late antiquity. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, the reassessment of traditional approaches, new theoretical models, the use of field-work technology and interdisciplinary applications. We encourage proposals from both established and newer scholars, as well as senior graduate students.

We are also pleased to be hosting the conference in conjunction with the Winnipeg Art Gallery, where the new exhibition Olympus: the Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin, will be open (April 15 2015–March 31 2016). Conference participants will enjoy free entry to the exhibition.

A call for papers will be issued early in 2015 and any questions should be directed to the conference organizers.

Conference organizers: Dr. Allison Surtees (University of Winnipeg – a.surtees@uwinnipeg.ca) and Dr. Kate Cooper (ROM/University of Toronto – kate.cooper@utoronto.ca)

MUSIC AND THE BODY IN GREEK AND ROMAN ANTIQUITY
MOISA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
29-31 JULY 2015, NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY, UK

From David Creeze

Music is an activity of the body: of breath and lips and teeth, of fingers and arms and stamping feet. The body's organs are instruments of music and dance, and the manufactured instruments (organa) which extend the range of musical sounds humans can naturally produce are also extensions of the body. The musical instrument is also construed as a body in its own right (a lyre has 'arms'; an aulos has a 'tongue'), and as a machine assembled from parts of non-human bodies (carapace, reed, gut, wood). Instrumental performance reshapes the human body according to the physical and acoustical properties of the instrument, and this reshaping has been a rich zone of interaction between visual and musical culture: the performing musician is an image of decorum or depravity, of grace or ugliness, of attraction or repulsion, of restraint or licence.

Greek and Roman literature and art offer a wealth of reflections on the relationship between musical activity and the body; and medical writers often exploit musical theories in the context of their own studies of human physiology and health. We invite proposals of no more than 300 words for 30-minute papers in English or Italian on any aspect of this topic, including its later receptions. Specific areas might include the following, among others:

- dance, gesture and other bodily movements in ancient musical culture
- costumes, dress, masks & the visual culture of musical performance
- gender, sexuality and the perception or representation of the performer's body
- body, soul, harmony and proportion in ancient views on music-making
- voice and instrument in moralising discourse on musical uses of the body
- music, the body of the individual and the body of the community
- music, magic and the control of the body
- bodily responses to music
- uses of musicological concepts and ideas in the works of medical writers
- music and the care of the body: e.g. therapy, incubation ritual

MOISA members are welcome to propose papers on other areas of Greek and Roman music or its cultural heritage.

Proposals should be sent to david.creese@newcastle.ac.uk by 20 February 2015.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA
ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELDSCHOOL IN ITALY

From Tanya Henderson

The University of Alberta's Department of History and Classics is now accepting student applications for the Archaeological Field School in Italy.

The field school is from June 1-19, 2015.

Within the context of research on the romanization and economy of rural Italy, we invite students to join us in an archaeological field school to be held in the Val di Chiana in Central Italy. This summer we will begin excavating a villa rustica, identified by geophysical survey. The significance of the site, located in the vicinity of the Etruscan Sodo tomb north west of Camucia, is to establish a more complete and accurate socio-economic history and contextualize the information within the diachronic evolution of the Val di Chiana.

Students can receive 6 credits (equivalent to two courses), which are transferable to their home institution.
