CAC 2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE – CALL FOR PAPERS (REMINDER)
CONGRÈS ANNUEL DE LA SCÉC 2015 – APPEL À COMMUNICATIONS (RAPPEL)

The Annual Conference of the Classical Association of Canada will be held at the University of Toronto, in downtown Toronto, 20 to 22 May, 2015.

The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Angelos Chaniotis (The Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) on 21 May. The conference banquet will take place on 22 May, following on the annual business meeting of the CAC.

The program committee hereby invites proposals for paper presentations. In addition to submissions from individual speakers, we solicit proposals for panels from research networks and sponsored research teams, not least those funded by SSHRC, that wish to present their collaborative work. Submissions from graduate students (PhD) should include a supporting letter from the supervisor.

Anyone wishing to speak at the conference should send a clear and informative abstract of their paper, 350-500 words in length (further instructions will be given on the Conference website: www.torontoCAC2015.com), to the chair of the program committee at cac2015.toronto@utoronto.ca, while providing the following references in the subject line: Paper proposal, Name (or: Panel proposal, Name of the panel coordinator). The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2015. Only submissions from scholars and students whose CAC membership for 2015 is paid in full by 31 January will be considered (for membership dues, visit cac-scec.ca/wordpress/membership).

In an ongoing effort to ensure the quality of the conference presentations, all submissions will undergo review.

Le congrès annuel de la Société canadienne des études classiques aura lieu à l’Université de Toronto, dans le centre-ville de Toronto, du 20 au 22 mai 2015.

Le conférencier principal sera le Professeur Angelos Chaniotis (The Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) qui donnera une conférence plénière le 21 mai. Le banquet du congrès aura lieu le 22 mai, après l’assemblée générale.

Le comité responsable de l’organisation lance un appel à communications. En plus des soumissions pour des présentations individuelles, nous sollicitons aussi des suggestions de séances de la part de groupes de recherche commandités, notamment ceux soutenus par le CRSH, qui souhaiteraient présenter le fruit de leur travail collectif. Les soumissions provenant de candidat(e)s au doctorat doivent inclure une lettre d’approbation de la part du directeur ou de la directrice de recherche.

Toutes celles et tous ceux qui souhaitent présenter au congrès sont priés d’envoyer un résumé clair et informatif d’environ 350-500 mots de la communication proposée au directeur du comité d’organisation à l’adresse suivante : cac2015.toronto@utoronto.ca (des informations supplémentaires seront disponibles sur le site internet du congrès : www.torontoCAC2015.com). The Women's Network/Réseau des Femmes of the CAC/SCÉC invites submissions for this year's panel, themed "Gender B(l)ending in Greek and Roman Culture and Society." We invite submissions that include (but are not limited to) explorations of cross-dressing, intersexuality, and any behaviour or representation that blurs the conventional boundaries of gender in Greco-Roman art, religion, literature, historiography, rhetoric, and other media.We warmly encourage all scholars and graduate students who are interested in the topic to apply. The Women's Network is a loose-knit group of scholars and students who are interested in the advancement of scholarship on ancient gender, and support women's academic careers in Classical Studies. Papers in both official languages of Canada (French and English) are welcome. The only requirement for participation is membership in the CAC, http://cac-scec.ca/membership/.

CALL FOR PAPERS
TOTAL RECALL: THE MANIPULATION OF MEMORY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia is proud to present their 16th Annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference. The Conference will be held at UBC's Thea's Lounge on May 1st and 2nd 2015, with a keynote address by Professor Niall Slater of Emory University. This year's theme is Memory. The purpose of the conference is to provide graduate students and senior undergraduates from a variety of disciplines with the opportunity to present original research in a less formal and more intimate setting than may be found in typical academic conferences. In previous years we have attracted emerging scholars from across Canada and the United States. We look forward to a variety of disciplinary perspectives and interpretations on this interesting and relevant subject matter. We invite submissions for papers related to the theme of Memory. This broad topic bridges time and discipline, finding relevance in both the ancient and modern worlds, and in areas of the arts, social sciences, and sciences. Relevant topics include (but are certainly not limited to):

• The Politics of Memory
• Commemorative Remembrance in Literature, Art, and Architecture
• The Memory of Warfare & Military Exploits
• Oblivion & the Loss of Memory in Textual and Archaeological Contexts

LET'S GET DIGITAL!
Call for contributions for a proposed panel
for the Classical Association of Canada's Annual Conference
Toronto, Ontario, May 20–22, 2015

As the field of Digital Humanities grows, a variety of new research and pedagogical tools have become available for scholars studying the ancient world. However, the cost often associated with these tools as well as the sheer volume of available software can be overwhelming, especially for those wishing to undertake smaller scale projects. This call for papers is seeking abstracts which feature viable, tested, and practical routes for classicists, archaeologists, and ancient historians alike to begin to engage with Digital Humanities in a meaningful way that produces rapid and fruitful results. We acknowledge that finding mechanisms for promotion and bridging the gap between scholarly and general audiences are daunting tasks for those working on small-scale digital projects and we envision this panel as a jumping-off point to make connections with scholars and peers dealing with similar obstacles. We are especially interested in projects that explore various methods of dissemination including social media, aggregators and interested, non-academic communities. Our goals are to increase awareness of the tools easily available to us as scholars and to work towards building a community interested in Digital Antiquity.

We welcome papers from all disciplines which have a historical focus. This includes topics in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities which are grounded by historical investigation.

Your submission should include a 200-300 word abstract containing the title, focus, and argument of your paper. Please also include your name, contact information, year of study, and which university you are currently attending.​

THE NEDA AND FRANZ LEIPEN FELLOWSHIP

The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2015 to 31 May 2016.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow’s research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline, but preference will be given to a candidate working in the field of Classical to Hellenistic Greek sculpture.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Neda and Franz Leipen Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$8,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY
ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL IN ITALY, 2015

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at Saint Mary’s University will be offering a field school in the territories of Genzano di Lucania, Irsina, and Banzi, Basilicata, Italy (http://www.comune.genzano.pz.it/genzano/home.jsp), (http://www.lifeinitaly.com/tourism/basilicata/irsina) and (http://www.comune.banzi.pz.it/). The field school will allow students to participate in an ongoing archaeological research project, (the Basentello Valley Archaeological Research Project: BVARP, please see www.bvarp.com), focused on the reconstruction of settlement patterns in the Basentello River Valley of Basilicata for the purpose of understanding better the cultural interaction between pre-Roman indigenous peoples and Roman migrants and settlers. Students will learn the basic techniques of archaeological field survey, finds processing and analysis, environmental archaeology, photography, drawing, mapping, and data entry. Students will work 5 days a week on site and will have their weekends free to visit nearby archaeological and touristic sites such as Venosa, Lecce, Bari, Matera, Metapontum, the Gargano Peninsula, and Trani, or to participate in organized field trips to sites in the region. There will be one long weekend in the middle of the field school during which time students will be given a guided tour of the site of Pompeii.

Dates: July 27 to August 21, 2015

Academic Credit: 6.0 credits (3.0 credits in CLAS 3610, Field Study in Roman Archaeology and 3.0 credits in CLAS 3611, Laboratory Methods in Roman Archaeology). The course will be taken as a visiting student through Saint Mary’s University.

Participation Fee: $2,200 CAD (estimated and subject to change). This fee covers room and board, all course equipment/supplies, and car rental for travel to the survey area. Nota bene: This does not include student airfare to and from Italy, or travel to Gravina in Puglia within Italy. Students should budget an additional $1,000 to $1,500 depending on their travel dates and point of departure.

Lodging: Rental apartments in Genzano di Lucania (Potenza), Italy

Food: Students will eat lunches either in the field or in the rental apartments, depending on the day’s activities. Dinners will be taken in the apartments, although once a week we will eat our evening meal in a local restaurant.

Other costs: Student travel on weekends; souvenirs; internet. These incidental costs will likely total between $300 and $500 CAD.

Prerequisites: 3.0 credits in Classics or archaeology

Ces cours se donnent aux deux semaines (24 heures en tout) et sont ouverts à tous. Renseignements à braultd@loyola.ca.

Courses: La Fondation Humanitas announces its next session of courses in Montreal which begins in January. Ancient Greek (Monday evenings) and Latin (Wednesday evenings)- beginners and advanced levels. These courses are open to all and meet every two weeks (24 hours total). TWO LATIN IMMERSION EXPERIENCES FOR SUMMER 2015

Not only teachers, who may wish to develop their ability to use Latin actively and extempore in the classroom to augment whatever teaching methods they prefer to use, but anyone at all devoted to Latin, such as professors, graduate students, and those who read Latin for personal enrichment, can benefit from both of these week-long seminars, which are exclusively aimed at helping those who take part to acquire a more instinctive and active command of the Latin language.

Topics to be discussed in each session are wide-ranging. In many sessions participants will read, interpret, and discuss Latin texts in Latin. The purpose of these seminars is to add an active dimension to the experience of those who already possess a passive reading knowledge of Latin. First-time participants and people new to spoken Latin are especially welcome, and the programme always features special sessions designed with newcomers in mind. Participants who are already experienced in the active use of Latin are also welcome. It is the organizers' intention that these seminars will provide participants at all levels with a pleasant opportunity to practice their skills in spoken and written Latin, and to meet like-minded others.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELDSCHOOL IN ITALY

The University of Alberta's Department of History and Classics is now accepting student applications for the Archaeological Field School in Italy.

The field school is from June 1-19, 2015.

Within the context of research on the romanization and economy of rural Italy, we invite students to join us in an archaeological field school to be held in the Val di Chiana in Central Italy. This summer we will begin excavating a villa rustica, identified by geophysical survey. The significance of the site, located in the vicinity of the Etruscan Sodo tomb north west of Camucia, is to establish a more complete and accurate socio-economic history and contextualize the information within the diachronic evolution of the Val di Chiana.

Students can receive 6 credits (equivalent to two courses), which are transferable to their home institution.
