IN MEMORIAM SALLY BELINDA PARMINTER HAAG (19 MAY 1937 – 18 JULY 2013)
From Sheila Ager
The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo was saddened this summer by the death of our long-time colleague and friend, Sally Haag. Sally had been a member of Classical Studies at Waterloo since the 1960s, long before Classical Studies became an independent department; she retired in 1996. A true philologist, with a great love of languages, Sally was a dedicated and inspiring teacher whose abilities were recognized by the University in 1993 when she received the Distinguished Teacher Award. Her devotion to pedagogy was also evident in the extensive work she did with the Teaching Resources and Continuing Education office (TRACE, now the Centre for Teaching Excellence).
Sally was a true advocate of lifelong learning, and much of her teaching at Waterloo addressed the needs and interests of off-campus and mature students. Sally herself pursued higher learning throughout her life, alongside her professional career and into retirement. Only a month before she passed away, Sally graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor's degree in German, with an Italian minor, which she proudly added to her other degrees in Classics and English Literature.
For those who might wish to make a donation in Sally's memory, her favourite charities were: Planned Parenthood, United Way, Opportunity International, CARE Canada, UNHCR UN Refugee Agency, and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AND DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICAL, NEAR EASTERN & RELIGIOUS STUDIES
TWO MA FELLOWSHIPS IN ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY
From Michael Griffin
The University of British Columbia invites applications for two (2) two-year MA fellowships in Ancient Philosophy available from 1 September 2014, to be held either in the Department of Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies or in the Department of Philosophy. In addition to normal funding through teaching assistantships (with remuneration up to around C$11,000 per annum), each fellowship is expected to carry a stipend of C$10,000 per annum for up to two years. The fellowships may be held while pursuing any one of the following three degrees: the MA in Classics; the MA in Philosophy; or the MA in Ancient Culture, Religion, and Ethnicity. Further information concerning admissions and available programs of study is available through the Department of Philosophy (www.philosophy.ubc.ca) and the Department of Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies (www.cnrs.ubc.ca); a list of research faculty and projects in ancient philosophy at UBC is also available at http://ancientphilosophy.arts.ubc.ca.
Applications are welcomed from students with interests in all areas of ancient philosophy, particularly those with a prospective research focus in the Platonic and Aristotelian philosophical traditions of the ancient Mediterranean world. Applicants will ideally possess some proficiency in at least one ancient philosophical language (such as Greek or Latin). Applicants interested in cross-cultural philosophy are also encouraged; UBC conducts active research in Greek and Roman, Indian, and Chinese philosophical traditions.
Successful applicants will also work as assistants with the Ancient Commentators project, jointly directed from 2013 by Prof. Richard Sorabji (King's College London and Oxford University) and Prof. Michael Griffin (University of British Columbia). Founded in 1985, the project aims to translate the principal Greek commentaries on Aristotle into English for the first time (along with a number of related philosophical texts from late antiquity). For details of the project, see http://www.ancientcommentators.org.uk.
Please contact Michael Griffin (michael.griffin@ubc.ca) for further details.
STUDY IN GREECE
ASCSA PROGRAMS AND FELLOWSHIPS 2014–2015
From Mary Darlington
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, one of America's most distinguished centers devoted to advanced teaching and research, was founded in 1881 to provide American graduate students and scholars a base for their studies in the history and civilization of the Greek world. Today, over 130 years later, it is still a teaching institution, providing graduate students a unique opportunity to study firsthand the sites and monuments of Greece. The School is also a superb resource for senior scholars pursuing research in many fields ranging from prehistoric to modern Greece, thanks to its internationally renowned libraries, the Blegen, focusing on all aspects of Greece from its earliest prehistory to late antiquity, and the Gennadius, which concentrates on the Greek world after the end of antiquity.
Membership application to the ASCSA must be made online at http://www.ascsa.edu.gr at the same time you apply to any outside funding organization for work at the School.
Please visit http://www.ascsa.edu.gr/index.php/admission-membership/grants for the following opportunities:
School programs are generally open to qualified students and scholars at colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada; restrictions may apply for specific fellowships and programs. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, sex, sexual orientation, color, religion, ethnic origin, or disability when considering admission to any form of membership.
