REMINDER: The editors of Mouseion are seeking an image to serve as the journal’s logo and would like to solicit the help of our creative colleagues and students within the larger Classics community. We are looking for a graphic to serve as the visual sign of the journal, which will be included in all issues and on all forms of correspondence (letterheads, business cards, etc.). The image should be one that can be reproduced clearly at smaller sizes (1” x 1”), although the journal will have the image professionally prepared by a graphic artist based upon the winner’s design in order to ensure quality-level. Note that above all else we are looking for an image that is distinctive and memorable, and it need not adhere to past exempla. The winner of the contest will be required to sign over rights to the graphic to Mouseion, but as compensation will receive both kleos and chremata in the form of acknowledgement as the creator of the logo in the journal, and in the form of a monetary prize of $250 CAN. Entries can be submitted to the editor at mouseion@mun.ca. The contest will close September 2012.

Call For Papers — Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity X (reminder)
From: Geoffrey Greatrex
The tenth biennial Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity conference will take place at the University of Ottawa, Canada, 21-24 March 2013. The period of Late Antiquity (A.D. 200-700) witnessed great cultural changes on a number of levels, e.g. in the emergence of new literary genres (such as hagiography) or of new building types (such as churches) or of new objects of art (consular diptychs).
The aim of the conference is to explore what exactly these changes were, and how and why they came about: were they the consequence of long-term trends or developments? Or were they rather the result of external factors, the products of what was once termed ‘an age of anxiety’? We hope to receive proposals of papers concerning the many genres that came into being or were transformed during the period, whether they be literary genres, such as panegyric, rhetoric, historiography, chronicles, poetry, epistolography and hagiography, or material genres, such as architecture, epigraphy, and numismatics. The term ‘genre’ is thus interpreted broadly, and papers that bring together several genres to address this issue, e.g. to consider Procopius’ Buildings both as panegyric and as a source on images of the city in Late Antiquity, or to consider the portrayal of saints in both hagiographies and artistic representations, are particularly welcome.
Two keynote speakers will be taking part in the conference: Professor John Matthews of Yale University (U.S.A.) and Professor Pierre-Louis Malosse, Université Paul-Valéry, Montpelier (France).
The deadline for proposals is 15 November 2012. Abstracts should be 200-300 words in length. Papers may be in English or French. Proposals from graduate students are welcome, but they should indicate on their submission whether they have discussed their proposal with their supervisor or not.
Proposals should be sent to: shiftingfrontiersx@gmail.com

CFP: Invisible Cultures: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives
19th-20th March 2013
Università degli Studi di Trento (Trento, Italy)
From: Chris Dawson
Some ancient cultural and social groups known from history or literature did not left any
material evidences on the ground. Furthermore, specific material remains cannot be related to
any information provided by literary sources. Therefore we can only assume the existence of
specific social groups – poor and disabled persons, foreigners or, generally speaking, individuals
marginalized for cultural, economical, political reasons, as well as women and children – that seem
to have left no historical or archaeological signs.
With this conference we would tackle the issue of the archaeological and historical invisibility
(disappearance or obliteration) of these groups. Interesting topics could be, for instance, the study
of the characteristics of these people's material culture, which avoid the preservation of their
archaeological context, the reasons why they did not have any access to literary production, and the
reasons why some material or literary sources have been destroyed, erased or hidden.
A further point of view deals with innovative methodological approaches: we want to verify
whether novel interpretations can be proposed, according to new research and analytical methods
applied to archaeological remains and historical sources, and why in many cases some sources and
data have not been analyzed in order to find information about specific social or cultural groups.
We accept papers in Italian and English, dealing with any geographical, chronological and
disciplinary context, with archaeological, historical, geographical but also philosophical,
sociological and literary perspective. Pure methodological papers are also accepted. Papers are
supposed to be 20 minutes long.
We welcome anonymous abstract (max 300 words) to be received by 20th October 2012 to the
following e-mail address:
viola.gheller@lett.unitn.it
The paper selection will be carried out within the following two weeks.
