Assistant Professor of Greek language and literature (tenure-track)

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies (CNERS) at the University of British Columbia–Vancouver campus invites applications for a tenure-track appointment, effective July 1, 2012, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The primary research focus of the position is in Greek literature, particularly poetry, but we also welcome applications from candidates working on intersections between Greek and Roman literature and culture. The person appointed will be willing and able to teach Greek language and literature at every level including graduate level; the ability to teach Latin too will be an advantage.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD (or expect to have successfully defended prior to 1 July 2012) and must have demonstrated accomplishments in scholarship along with enthusiasm for teaching in a department with the unique combination of fields present in CNERS. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research and teaching and to participate fully in graduate supervision, departmental service, events and initiatives.

The position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Rebanks Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

The Royal Ontario Museum is Canada’s pre-eminent international museum and houses important collections in World Cultures and Natural History.

The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto invites applications for a Rebanks Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Classical Archaeology. A two-year fellowship with a grant of $50,000 a year, the Rebanks Fellowship program provides Canadian citizens or Canadian landed immigrants who have obtained their doctorate in the last five years the opportunity to pursue their research with the support of one of Canada’s leading research institutions. The Rebanks Research Fellowship is open to scholars working in most aspects of Greek and Roman archaeology. We seek applicants with significant research potential whose work complements the strengths of the Royal Ontario Museum’s Greek and Roman collections. Museum experience and familiarity with web page development are also preferred. The Fellow would have some collection and exhibit responsibilities and would be expected to interact with the public through lectures, gallery activities and web based-media. Publication opportunities may be available to Rebanks Fellows through the publishing arm of the Museum.

The Department of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the College of Arts and Sciences seeks an assistant professor in Latin prose for a tenure-track appointment. The area of specialization is open, but we especially welcome candidates working on prose of the Republican or Augustan periods, and those with an ability to teach Latin epigraphy at the graduate level. Teaching duties will include graduate courses in Latin prose, as well as undergraduate courses in Latin and classical civilization.

Applicants should demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and a serious commitment to teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Preference will be given to those with Ph.D. in hand or those who can provide assurances of completing the degree by July 1, 2012. UNC Chapel Hill is an EOE employer. Comme le Centre d'études classiques de l'Université de Montréal n'est pas un département, c'est le Département de philosophie qui procède au recrutement du professeur de grec, mais il est bien entendu que l'enseignement et les recherches du professeur de grec se font dans le cadre des programmes offerts par le Centre d'études classiques.

The Seventh Annual Windsor Classics Undergraduate Conference

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in conjunction with the Humanities Research Group of the University of Windsor is pleased to sponsor its seventh annual Classics Undergraduate Conference to be held on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Undergraduate majors in Classical Civilization or related fields are invited to submit abstracts (of 300 words maximum) for a 15 to 20 minute talk on any aspect of ancient Greece or Rome.  Please include name, year, and student number as well as a phone number or e-mail address with your submission, which is to be made to Dr. Max Nelson (who can be contacted by e-mail at mnelson@uwindsor.ca).  The deadline for the submission of abstracts is January 31, 2012.  Notification of acceptance will be provided by February 15, 2012.

The Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi Fellowship

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Institute in Greece invite applications for the Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi Fellowship to be held in Athens, Greece, from 1 September, 2012 to 31 May 2013.

The applicant must be pursuing graduate of post-doctoral studies, have a clear need to work in Greece, and must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.

In addition to his or her studies, the Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of the CIG. The nature of this work is to be determined in consultation with the Director. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow’s research focus will be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to Byzantine, and in any academic discipline, but preference shall be given to a candidate working in the field archaeology, art history or epigraphy. In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and The Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of $8,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel for the period of the fellowship.

Bourse Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi de l'Institut canadien en Grèce

L'Institut canadien en Grèce sollicite les candidatures pour la bourse d'études Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi à Athènes, Grèce, du 1er septembre 2011 au 31 mai 2012. Le candidat doit être citoyen canadien ou immigrant reçu, doit poursuivre des études avancées ou post-doctorales et doit avoir besoin de séjourner en Grèce.

En plus de ses études, le boursier assistera le directeur adjoint de l'ICG dans le travail de bureau ou à la bibliothèque (10 heures par semaine); il participera aussi aux activités officielles de l'ICG. On recommande donc une expérience antérieure en Grèce et au moins un peu de grec moderne.

Tout aspect des études helléniques, de l'Antiquité jusqu'au Moyen-Âge, et n'importe quelle discipline académique peut servir de point focal des recherches du boursier, mais une préférence sera accordée au candidat qui travaille dans le domaine de la sculpture grecque de l'époque classique à l'époque hellénistique. Dans toute publication éventuelle de ses recherches conduites sous les auspices de cette bourse, le boursier reconnaîtra l'assistance de l'Institut canadien en Grèce ainsi que celle de la bourse d'études Elisabeth Rosenbaum Alföldi. Allocation de $8000 et logement à l'hôtellerie de l'ICG pendant le séjour.

The Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies announces the following activities and events.

Currently the institute is playing host to Professor Elizabeth Carney, of Clemson University. Sponsored by the Onassis Foundation through its University Seminar Program, Prof. Clemson is participating in a graduate seminar, lecturing in a senior undergraduate course, giving a presentation to the university community, and providing advice in research. A historian who has published on topics that include Alexander, Arsinoë, and women in military leadership, Dr. Carney is conducting  a study into the lives and careers of Hellenistic women in political positions.

A widely-published specialist in Hellenistic history, Professor Eckstein will give a lecture entitled "Polybius, the 'Treaty of Philinus', and the History of Roman Accusations Against Carthage", on Thursday November 10, 2011, 1:00-2:30 in Room 235 of the Physics Building, University of Waterloo. The lecture is open to the public.
