The
University's Augustana Campus enrolls about 1000 students in baccalaureate
degree programs on a picturesque residential campus in the city of Camrose, 90
km southeast of Edmonton. Augustana is committed to building on its reputation
for rigorous, high-quality teaching in the tradition of the liberal arts and
sciences, and, in doing so, provides a distinctive undergraduate academic
experience for students within one of Canada's leading universities. Augustana
is the only Canadian member of the 25-member Council of Public Liberal Arts
Colleges, an alliance in support of superior, accessible higher education. It
seeks to attract promising scholars who will share its enthusiasm for teaching
in a collegial, small-campus environment.
The Department of Humanities at
the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus invites applications for the
following sessional teaching position in Classical Studies. Subjects will
include:
Greek Civilization
Greek and Roman Mythology
The
successful candidate will be expected to hold a minimum of a Master's degree in
Classical Studies, and will preferably have recent experience in university
teaching at the undergraduate level.
This position has an approximate
appointment of one academic year; salary will be commensurate with experience in
accordance with the Contract Academic Staff Agreement.

Department of Classics and Ancient History, on the Fredericton campus of the
University of New Brunswick, invites applications for an 11-month teaching term
appointment at the rank of Instructor, to begin August 1, 2010. The position is
subject to budgetary
approval. The successful applicant will have a PhD in hand or near completion
and will be expected to teach six courses (three per semester), including
courses in Classical Archaeology, Greek, Classical Mythology and Roman

2010 Meeting of the Atlantic Classical Association
October 15-16, 2010 at
Saint Mary's University, Halifax NS
The Classics program at Saint Mary's
University in Halifax will be hosting the Annual Meeting of the Atlantic
Classical Association on Friday October 15 and Saturday October 16,
2010.
Papers of 20 minutes duration are invited on any aspect of the
Ancient World or its reception. Please send the title and an abstract of not
more than 200 words to 2010 ACA Conference, by August 31, 2010 to Alison Barclay
(Alison.Barclay@smu.ca) or Myles McCallum (Myles.McCallum@smu.ca). Please also
include your A.V. requirements.

Two years ago, the
First Ministers met to discuss the economy and as a result they ratified the
Internal Agreement on Trade which required every province to review their
procedures for certifying professionals, doctors, dentists, engineers,
bricklayers, plumbers, etc., and procedures in place for allowing professionals
from other provinces to move with ease between the provinces as a means of
increasing internal trade. Any barriers had to be reduced or removed entirely as
a result of the IAT. In Ontario, teaching is more highly regulated than in any
other province and this has prevented teachers from other provinces moving to
Ontario and practicing without rigorous scrutiny, often taking up to five years
to receive an OTC (Ontario Teaching Certificate) and often requiring teachers to
take additional qualification courses. As a result of the IAT, Ontario's
Ministry of Education has spent the past two years working with the Ontario
College of Teachers to remove many barriers and create a more fluid system for
teachers trained in other provinces to teach in Ontario. As well, Ontario
trained teachers can work in other provinces without impediment. This is
essentially reciprocity for teaching.
This is important for Classics. It
means that Classics majors interested in teaching Latin at the secondary level
can come to Ontario to certify and have that certification recognised in their
home province. It means that teachers, who have Latin courses in their academic
degree from other provinces, could come to Ontario and begin teaching Latin in
the secondary schools here. On an even broader scale, this means that the
Classics community of Canada can begin to consider the possibility of reviving
Latin in the high school curricula of other provinces. If we think back to the
1950's and 1960's when Latin was a compulsory course at the secondary level in
every jurisdiction in Canada, Classics programmes at the post-secondary level
flourished because there was a direct application of the degree students were
studying: teaching. During the 1970's and 80's, programmes at the secondary
level began to disappear, most notably because of disinterest on the part of
administrators and students and retirements by teachers. In the 1990's, even
into the new millennium, Latin at the secondary level has all but disappeared
everywhere, except in small isolated pockets and in Ontario. While Ontario's
curriculum preserves Latin, the situation is far from idyllic. For the past
twenty years, Classics departments, in Ontario and beyond, have been suffering
enormous reductions to staff and funding. The two are linked. Now is the time
for the Classics community to begin the work to revitalise Classics at the
secondary level. Now is the time to begin the discussion.
