March Issue sent early

I received several requests to send out a special issue of the CCB, to include time-sensitive announcements that were not submitted on time for the February regular issue. It made the most sense instead to send out the March regular issue early rather than on the 15th, and include all of the announcements submitted since last month. I may send an additional special issue on March 15, if there is an urgent need. Otherwise, the regular mailing schedule will be resumed on April 15.

I remind all subscribers that if you wish to submit an announcement for the CCB, please email me on or before the 10th of the month in which you want the announcement to appear. Special editions will only be sent out infrequently. Thanks!

Update: The preliminary program for the AAH is now up on the conference website. The acceptance notices for papers for the CAC have been sent out and we're hoping to have the preliminary program set, approved by council, and posted to the website by the end of the month. Registration for both conferences is now open - early bird deadlines are March 31st and April 10th respectively. Registration costs have increased slight Forms are found on the conference website. On-campus accommodation can now be booked - the link to online reservations is found on the website. The room block will be held for us until April 10th. There are apparently a number of conferences on campus in May - I fear that any attempt to book a room AFTER April 10th will meet with no success. Please book before April 10th! McMaster University

The Department of Classics at McMaster University invites applications for a contractually limited appointment to run for one year (July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010).  The successful candidate will teach 6 courses (3 per term), including classical archaeology (1 Greek archaeology, 3 Roman archaeology) and two sections of first year Latin.  A PhD in Classics with specialization in Archaeology is required, and a record of excellent teaching is preferred.  Applicants should send (in hard copy only) a letter of application, together with a curriculum vitae and a sample of their writing, to Dr. Michele George, Chair, Department of Classics, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4M2, Canada; fax: 905-577-6930. Department of History -Term position in Classics

The Department of History at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a one-year term appointment in Classics, with possibility of renewal for an additional two years, beginning July 1, 2009.  The successful applicant will be one of three Classics faculty in the History Department and will also be part of the interdisciplinary Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies program in the College of Arts and Science. Teaching will include first-year Latin, senior Latin (applicant’s choice of author), as well as one class each in Greek and Roman civilization.  We encourage applications from Classics scholars whose research area is material culture with a proven ability to integrate his or her specialization into the broader cultural environment (literary, artistic, social, philosophical, linguistic). A demonstrated ability to teach Latin at all levels is required. Completed PhD and refereed publications are strongly preferred, as is evidence of excellence in teaching.

This appointment will be at the Lecturer level (current starting salary $56,667). La mystique dans la gnose et chez Plotin
Journées d’études internationales organisées par
Jean-Marc-Narbonne et Paul-Hubert Poirier
 
Les journées d’études internationales sur La mystique dans la gnose et chez Plotin se dérouleront à l’Université Laval les 20 et 21 mars 2009 et réuniront neuf spécialistes universitaires qui apporteront un éclairage renouvelé sur les premiers textes de notre tradition à relater une expérience de remontée, de contact et d'union intime de l'âme avec le divin.  Les deux trois premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne, principalement à Alexandrie et à Rome, furent le théâtre de la rencontre entre la tradition grecque, notamment platonicienne, et différents courants de pensée gnostiques et hermétiques venus d'Orient ou imprégnés d'influences orientales.  L'école de Plotin, au IIIe siècle à Rome, fut au cœur de ce croisement, Plotin comptant parmi ses auditeurs des gnostiques dits « séthiens », c'est-à-dire des gnostiques chrétiens platonisants, et c'est peut-être ainsi, pour une part au moins, qu'est né le « néoplatonisme » proprement dit, fruit de ces échanges qui allait communiquer au platonisme classique une sensibilité neuve, et finalement faire naître ce qui, depuis, nous est retransmis diversement sous le vocable de « mystique ».

Montreal Classics Collquium: Call for Papers

The McGill Classics Students Association is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the second annual Montréal Classics Colloquium, tentatively to be held Friday, March 27th, 2009.

The Classics Colloquium is a unique opportunity for advanced undergraduates and graduates in the field of Classics and Ancient History to present their research papers before an audience of faculty and colleagues from across the city of Montréal.

If you are interested in presenting, please submit your research in one of the following formats to classicsmontreal@yahoo.com for review either one of the following:

- a completed paper (10+ pages in length; however, presentation will be 15 minutes);
- a half-page synopsis of your research;
- an introduction and (tentative) conclusion revealing the direction of your paper.

The deadline for all submissions is March 15, 2009.

Monuments and Artifacts of Ancient Greece: A Study Tour in Greece and Crete

Concordia University (CMLL) is offering a 23-day study tour of Greece entitled “Monuments and Artifacts of Ancient Greece.” This tour will be held from May 5th through 28th, 2009, and will be led by Drs. George W.M. Harrison and Jane Francis.

This course will lead students to many of the major archaeological sites and museums in mainland Greece and Crete. 3-credits for CLAS 370 are available through Concordia. Grading will be based on one oral report on site and two short research papers based on material studied on the tour; topics and pertinent bibliography will be assigned to students prior to departure. It is also possible to audit the course, although the Concordia fee for auditing will be imposed.

Final costs are yet to be determined but will be around $3300 Canadian, if there are sufficient numbers of participants. This amount will cover all accommodations, ground/sea travel, and breakfasts during the 23 days of the course. Students are responsible for obtaining appropriate travel insurance, the cost/arrangements of their airfare to Greece, other food, and Concordia tuition costs. In order to gain free entrance to sites and museums, students must be members of the Canadian Institute in Greece ($20 with proof of student ID) and to obtain a Museum/Site pass through the Institute ($10).

Training to be a teacher of Latin or Greek at York University.

Starting in 2009/10 the Faculty of Education at York University will be offering Classical Studies (Latin) and Classical Studies (Greek) as teaching subjects at the Intermediate/Senior level (Grades 7-12) of its Bachelor of Education program. Students who are interested in training to be teachers of Latin will choose Classical Studies (Latin) as one of their two teaching subjects. Classical Studies (Greek) is also available. The Bachelor of Education may be earned either consecutively, after the completion of an undergraduate degree, or consecutively, at the same time as an undergraduate degree.

The application deadline for the concurrent program for 2009/10 is 20 March 2009. The next application deadline for the consecutive program will be late November 2009.
