PRIX DU MÉRITE DE LA SCEC: APPEL À NOMINATIONS

Nous invitons des nominations au Prix du mérite, selon la procédure prescrite par l’article (b) du règlement. Toutes nominations et demandes de renseignements doivent être addressées au président sortant de la société et président du comité de sélection, M. RÈGLEMENT 13
(a) La Société attribue un Prix du mérite pour reconnaître les efforts soutenus et méritoires d’un membre à l'accomplissement des objectifs de la Société (tels que définis à l’article 2 des Statuts). Le Prix consiste en une mention honorifique et un certificat offerts lors de l'assemblée générale annuelle. Le Prix est l’occasion pour la Société de reconnaître la contribution remarquable d’un membre pour la discipline, telle que, par exemple, un enseignement d'excellence et innovant, la formation et l'encadrement d'étudiants comme de collègues, la promotion des civilisations grecque et romaine auprès du grand public et les services rendus à la Société.

(b) Le Prix du mérite est accordé selon la procédure suivante. Chaque année, avant le 15 septembre, la Société fait parvenir aux membres un appel à nominations dont la date limite est fixée au 15 décembre. Chaque nomination devra être co-signée par un proposeur et un secondeur et fournira un exposé des motifs qui justifient la nomination. Peu avant ou à l'occasion de sa réunion d'automne, le conseil constitue un comité présidé par le président sortant et composé d’un membre ordinaire du conseil et de deux membres de la Société. Le comité fera part de sa (ses) recommandation(s) au conseil à l’occasion de la réunion du printemps. Un ou plusieurs Prix peuvent être octroyés chaque année. Le comité se charge de la rédaction du texte de la (des) mention(s) qui sera (seront) lue(s) à l'assemblée générale annuelle de la Société.

CAC AWARD OF MERIT: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

We call for nominations for the Award of Merit, in accordance with the procedure outlined in section (b) of the Bylaw. Enquiries and nominations should be addressed to this year’s Past President and Committee chair, Dr. James Murray, Office of the Dean of Arts, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB E3B 5A3 <jsm@unb.ca>. Note: The deadline for nominations has been extended to March 31, 2009.

BYLAW 13
(a) The Association shall administer an Award of Merit in order to recognize a member’s longstanding and meritorious efforts in fulfilling the goals of the Association (as defined in Article 2 of the Constitution). The Award shall consist of a citation and certificate presented at the Annual General Meeting. The Award is an opportunity for the Association to acknowledge outstanding service to the discipline, such as, but not limited to, excellent or innovative teaching, mentoring of students and faculty colleagues, promoting knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world among the general public, and service to the Association.

(b) The Award of Merit shall be made according to the following procedure. Each year before September 15th, the Association shall issue a call for nominations to all members, with a deadline for submissions of December 15th. Each nomination shall be signed by a nominator and a seconder, and shall include a statement of the specific reasons for the nomination. At or before its Fall meeting the Council shall strike a committee consisting of one ordinary Council member, two regular members of the Association, and the Past President as chair. This committee shall report its recommendation(s) to the Council at its spring meeting. One or more awards may be made in any year. The Committee shall compose citation(s) to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Association.

Message from Jonathan Edmondson, President, CAC/SCEC:

I've recently received a request from a researcher for an educational television programme being produced by Yap Films (yapfilms.com). The series will look at ancient military leaders and the strategies and weapons they used to build their empires.

He is looking first to learn more about these leaders and their strategies. Their series plans to begin by looking at Alexander the Great and continue through history looking at Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Attila the Hun on to Genghis Khan.

He has written to me as the President of the CAC/SCEC asking if I might direct him to some Canadian experts who are working in those areas, specifically military strategy and the development of ancient weaponry.

If any CAC/SCEC colleagues are interested in this project, would they let me know as soon as possible and I can forward their names on to the researcher?

The CAC/SCEC is currently seeking to expand its outreach activities, and this seems to me a good way to put our expertise to good use for a Canadian educational project.

CALL FOR PAPERS: JUSTICE IN THE GRECO-ROMAN WORLD (UNIV. OF WESTERN ONTARIO)

Proposals for individual papers (15-20 minutes) are sought on the subject of Justice in the Greco-Roman World for a three-day colloquium at the University of Western Ontario, March 5th to March 7th, 2010. Specific topics could include: human or divine justice in Greek or Roman epic; the rules, procedures, and institutions of Greek or Roman law; the influence of social norms and political and cultural traditions on law; the function of law in ancient society; punishment in theory and practice; prevalent  attitudes towards capital and corporal punishment; criminal procedure and criminal liability. We  encourage submissions from the various fields which comprise the study of the ancient world (art, literature, history, religion, inscriptions, epigraphy etc.) and solicit papers treating Greek and Roman cultures across a broad range of theoretical perspectives.

SPRING MEETING OF ONTARIO CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION: Sat. 28 March 2009
New Registration Deadline: Monday, March 23

The Spring Meeting of the Ontario Classical Association will take place at Trent University (Peterborough) on Saturday 28 March 2009 from 9.30 to 3.30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, Scott House, at Traill College (Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario). It will be in honour of Professor David Page, a former OCA President who taught Roman History and Classics at Trent University for his entire career. The theme of the meeting is “The Lessons of History”. 

The keynote speaker is Professor Tim Cornell (University of Manchester), who will give a talk on “When was Rome founded?”.

Other speakers include Professor Guy Chamberland (Laurentian University) and Professor Fanny Dolansky (Brock University). There will also be a panel discussion on “Think Latin, Take Latin: Promotional Strategies for Classics”, involving Elizabeth Ellison (Elmwood School, Ottawa), Richard Burgess (University of Ottawa) and Allison Glazebrook (Brock).  For full details of the meeting, see schedule below.

Registrations are due 1 March 2009 23 March 2009 (see registration form, below). Cost: $50 (OCA members), $60 (non-OCA members), $40 (students), including a hot lunch.

Cette bourse est offerte en mémoire de Desmond Conacher, ancien Professeur d’études classiques à Trinity College, Toronto, Membre de la Société royale du Canada et Président honoraire de la Société canadienne d'études classiques. La Fondation a été constituée grâce aux généreux dons de la famille, des amis et des collègues de D. Conacher, ainsi que des universités auxquelles il était affilié. Ses objectifs sont d’encourager et de soutenir financièrement un jeune étudiant entreprenant des études supérieures en études classiques au Canada. La Fondation est administrée par la Société canadienne d'études classiques et son Comité de sélection. Une bourse de 2500 $ est attribuée chaque année.

Critères d’admissibilité. Les candidats doivent être des étudiants canadiens (citoyens ou résidents reçus) sur le point de commencer la première année d'un programme de deuxième cycle en études classiques (ou l’équivalent) dans une université canadienne. Les divers domaines de spécialisation propres aux études classiques et anciennes, tels que l’histoire ancienne, la philosophie ancienne et l’archéologie, sont admissibles. Les candidats doivent être âgés de moins de 28 ans au 1er janvier de l’année de la demande. Les principaux critères de sélection sont les réalisations académiques, les objectifs de carrière et les perspectives de succès, et le fait de posséder une formation de premier cycle pertinente.

Modalités de présentation. Les pièces suivantes devraient être acheminées au plus tard le 31 mars (à destination) à Alison Keith, CAC Awards Committee Chair, Department of Classics, University of Toronto, 125 Queen’s Park, Toronto ON, M5S 2C7:

• Un formulaire de demande (disponible sur le site-web http://scec-cac.ca/conacher/index.html)
• Une lettre personnelle (non plus de 1000 mots) faisant état des études antérieures, des expériences de travail et des objectifs universitaires et de carrière;
• Une liste des prix, honneurs et bourses reçus aux niveaux collégial et universitaire;
• Originaux ou copies certifiées conformes (par le département) des résultats obtenus au cours des études de premier cycle;
• Deux lettres d’appréciation écrites par des professeurs d'université connaissant bien les travaux du candidat (envoyées séparément par les professeurs ou par le candidat, sous pli cacheté, et contresigné par le professeur).

Procédure de sélection et annonce des résultats. Le comité de sélection se réunit à l'occasion du Congrès annuel qui se tient en mai. Les candidats seront informés des résultats peu de temps après. La bourse sera versée en septembre, après confirmation que le récipiendaire a bien complété son inscription dans un programme d’études supérieures d'une université canadienne. Le Comité de sélection peut réduire le montant de la bourse ou peut décider d'un prix honorifique de remplacement si la somme de la bourse et des autres bourses cumulées par le récipiendaire (incluant tout type de bourse, exemption de frais de scolarité, contrats d'assistanat d'enseignement ou de recherche, ou toute forme de revenu de cet ordre) excède le montant de 20,000 $. Dans ce cas, une bourse pourra être accordée au second en lice.

The Desmond Conacher Scholarship

Call for applications — This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada. The scholarship has been endowed through donations from his family, friends, colleagues, and universities with which he was associated. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is administered by the Classical Association of Canada through its Awards Committee. One award of $2,500 is offered each year.

Eligibility and criteria — Applicants must be Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents) intending to enter the first year of graduate studies in a classics or similar programme at a Canadian university. Specializations within the general area of classics such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. Applicants must be less than 28 years of age on January 1st of the year of application. The main criteria are academic achievement, professional promise, and an appropriate under-graduate preparation.

Application procedure — The following items should be sent, to arrive by MARCH 31st, to Professor Alison Keith, CAC Awards Committee Chair, Department of Classics, University of Toronto, 125 Queen’s Park, Toronto, ON M5S 2C7:

• A completed application form (downloadable from http://cac-scec.ca/conacher/index.html)
• A personal statement (maximum 1000 words) describing the applicant’s previous academic career, employment experience, and academic and career objectives;
• A list of any academic awards and honours received at the postsecondary level;
• Transcripts recording the applicant’s undergraduate degree work (unofficial transcripts are acceptable if certified by the applicant’s department);
• Two letters of recommendation from university teachers familiar with the applicant’s work (sent separately by the writers or included with the application in envelopes sealed and countersigned by them).

Selection and award procedure — The Committee meets during the Association’s Annual Conference in May. Applicants will be informed of the results soon after this. The award will be paid in September subject to confirmation that the winner has registered in an appropriate graduate program. The committee may choose to reduce the amount of the award or make an honorary award if the total amount of this and other awards offered to the winner for the first twelve months of graduate study (including scholarships, fee remissions, teaching and research assistantships and the like) exceeds $20,000. In such cases an award may be made to a runner-up.

In Memoriam, D.F.S. Thomson

I am saddened to inform the Canadian Classics community that the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto mourns the death of another long-standing colleague, Professor D.F.S. Thomson, on 18 February 2009. The following death notice appeared in the Globe & Mail, on Friday 20 February:

THOMSON, Douglas Ferguson Scott

At his home in Toronto, on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, in his 90th year. Dearly loved husband of Eleanor and father of James, Sarah and Jessica. Professor Emeritus, Department of Classics, University College at the University of Toronto. Served with the Mountain artillery, Indian Army, in the Burma campaign. Private family funeral. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Professor Thomson received his education in the United Kingdom, attending the Glasgow Academy (1928-1938) and Merton College, Oxford (1938-1939, 1945-1947), from which he received his BA and MA in 1946. He taught at Glasgow Academy in 1948 before taking up a position as Lecturer in the Department of Classics at University College in the University of Toronto, and taught there until his retirement in 1985 although he also enjoyed a period as Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1967-1968. Throughout his years at the University of Toronto, he made extensive service contributions to his department and his college, in addition to serving as Second in Command of the Canadian Officers’ Training Corps (University of Toronto Contingent) as Captain and Major, 1954-1960. Professor Thomson’s scholarly specialization was in Latin literature and textual criticism, with a focus on Catullus and Erasmus. His critical edition of Catullus’ poetry was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1978 and his magisterial commentary on the Catullan corpus appeared from the University of Toronto Press in 1997, in paperback in 2003. In addition, he co-edited, co-annotated and co-translated six volumes of the correspondence of Erasmus in collaboration with R.A.B. Mynors (and others) as well as co-editing (with H.C. Porter) a volume of Erasmus’ Cambridge letters, all of which appeared in the Collected Works of Erasmus imprint of the University of Toronto Press.

The Department of Classics at the University of Toronto deeply regrets the loss of our valued colleague.
