Chair, Department of History and Classics
The Department of History & Classics is one of the largest and most diverse in Canada. We have 49 faculty members in History, Classics and Religious Studies. The department is committed to excellence in teaching and research. It is a leader in areas such as East European History, Western Canadian History, History of Science and Medicine, Roman Archaeology and History, British History and Late Antique and Medieval History, and it continues to innovate and advance in many more areas. In addition, the department and many of its members contribute much to interdisciplinary programs such as Science, Technology and Society, Humanities Computing, Middle Eastern and African Studies and Religious Studies. Members of the department are closely linked to a number of research centers and institutes (e.g., Material Culture Institute, the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies), and scholarly organizations. The department operates the Hardy Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Near Eastern and Classical Antiquities in Canada. The next chair will be an internationally recognized historian or classicist with a strong research program, superior teaching record and strong strategic-planning, organizational and management skills. The chair must appreciate and encourage the diversity of scholarship in the department and implement a supportive, collegial and open administrative style. The chair must be able to articulate a broad vision of History and Classics and have a clear operational sense of how all areas of the department can be promoted and their activities supported. Candidates with demonstrated administrative experience will be preferred. The successful candidate will have a scholarly record suitable for appointment at the rank of tenured full professor. Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with experience.

Mount Allison University
The Crake Doctoral Fellowship
The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2008-2009.
The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.
The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to the end of April.
In 2008-2009 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $24,000 (CDN), with an allowance of up to $3,500 (CDN) to cover moving and other research-associated expenses.
Applications should include official transcripts and three letters of reference. The thesis supervisor should be asked to write concerning the subject of the thesis and the expected date for its final submission. Applicants should also send a statement regarding the progress of their doctoral studies, including their schedule for completion, and a 1-2 page synopsis of their thesis.

2nd Annual Conference on Classical Studies and Archaeology
28-29 MARCH 2008
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Classics Society in conjunction with the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton will be hosting their second annual Classics Conference on 28-29 March 2008. The conference will be open to all MA students and senior undergraduates. A keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Christopher G. Brown from the University of Western Ontario.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Myth, Epic and Drama in the Ancient World”. However, all varieties of topics related to the Classical World will be accepted. Presentations should be about fifteen to twenty minutes in length and visual aids are encouraged.
The registration fee is $15, payable at the conference.
Abstracts should be around 300 words and should include a name, address, e-mail address, phone number and the university affiliation. The deadline for submissions is February 12th 2008, and all accepted MA and Undergraduate students will be notified by February 18th, 2008. Abstracts (preferably as a word document) should be sent to Chelsey Young t33k2@unb.ca, as should any questions. All MA and Undergraduate students are welcome and encouraged to submit an abstract regardless of experience.

Saint Mary's University and Mount Allison University are offering a joint field school in archaeology from July 5 to August 2, 2008, at the Roman Imperial villa site of San Felice, Italy. The project's goals are to understand better imperial landholdings in southern Italy, the nature of rural structures in Roman Puglia, and the process of Romanization in the region. Students will participate fully in an ongoing
archaeological research project, learning basic field techniques of archaeological excavation and artifacts processing. Students will work 5 days a week on site and will have their weekends free. Field trips
will be arranged on weekends to nearby archaeological sites, including Pompeii. Students will live in apartments, where they will also eat lunch, and dinners will be taken each evening at a local restaurant.
Student applicants must have at least 3.0 credit hours in Classics or have taken an introductory course in archaeology. The participation fee, which covers food, lodging, transportation while on the project, and
equipment, is $1750.00. Airfare to Italy is not included in this fee. Students will also have to register for CLAS 3610, offered through St. Mary's University, and pay the requisite tuition and fees. Alexander G. McKay Prize Announcement
The Vergilian Society is pleased to announce the establishment of the Alexander G. McKay Prize for the best book in Vergilian studies. The prize, which is accompanied by a cash award of $500 or a life membership in the Vergilian Society (valued at $750), will be awarded every other year to the book that, in the opinion of the prize evaluation committee, makes the greatest contribution toward our understanding and appreciation of Vergil or topics related to Vergil. Works of literary criticism, biography, bibliography, textual criticism, reference, history, archaeology, and the classical tradition are all eligible, provided that Vergilian studies represent a significant portion of the discussion. The first competition will cover books published during the years 2005 through 2007. The winner, who will be selected by two members of the prize evaluation committee appointed by the President in consultation with the executive committee, will be announced at the Vergilian Society session at the annual meeting of the American Philological Association in January, 2009 and every two years thereafter. The authors of books being considered for the McKay Prize must be members of the Vergilian Society at the time their books are submitted.
A copy of each book to be considered must be sent to both members of the prize evaluation committee by April 15, 2008. The two members for this cycle are:

MOISA: The International Society for the Study of Greek and Roman Music and its Cultural Heritage is a non-profit association incorporated in Italy in 2007 for the preservation, interpretation, and valorization of ancient Greek and Roman music and musical theory, as well as its cultural heritage to the present day.
The aims of the Society are as follows:
- to foster research (especially of an interdisciplinary nature) concerning music and its place in ancient Greek and Roman society and culture;
- to provide a census of the ancient musical property (archaeological, bibliographical and archival property, musical instruments, audio recordings, iconographic-musical material, theatre material and so forth) from the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations and their cultural heritage in public institutions, private collections and foundations;
- to promote the study and circulation of the musical property deriving from ancient Greece and Rome;
- to carry out ethnomusicological research projects in order to document ancient musical practices as they appear in traditional music;
- to carry out the study of the heritage of Greek and Roman musical practice and theory;
- to organize and host an annual meeting for the communication of news and research among members of the Society, and to conduct the Society’s business;
- to foster communication among members by every means;
- to coordinate national and international research projects and groups in the field and to cooperate with other study groups and associations, universities, music schools and public schools to develop the study of ancient Greek and Roman music and its cultural heritage.
All members of MOISA are automatically subscribed to Moisa, an electronic discussion list that has been set up in order to allow the Executive Board and members of the Society to carry on the Society's business in between the annual meetings and to communicate calls for papers; notices of publications, conferences, colloquia, seminars, lectures, performances, research or teaching positions available; scholarship announcements; and invitations for research collaboration.

MOISA: International Society for the Study of Greek and Roman Music and its Cultural Heritage è un’associazione senza fini di lucro fondata in Italia nel 2007 per la conservazione, l’interpretazione e la valorizzazione della musica, della teoria musicale greca e romana, e della sua eredità culturale sino a oggi.
