NOTICE OF MOTIONS
to AMEND bylaw 5 concerning
NOMINATING PROCEDURES
The following motions will be moved on behalf of the Council by Martin Cropp (Past-President), seconded by Patrick Baker (Secretary) at the next Annual General Meeting.
Preamble.
Minor adjustments in our nominating procedures are needed to reflect current practices, as follows:
Motion 1
In By-law 5 b., first sentence, add a parenthesis (in red below) so that the sentence will read as follows:
The Nominating Committee shall consist of a Chair chosen from the Past Presidents of the Association (normally the Immediate Past President) and two other members of the Association appointed by the Council.
Motion 2
In By-law 5 c. delete the final phrase (in red below) since the call for nominations, dues notices and call for conference papers are now issued separately:
c. After the annual meeting, the regular nomination of a member in good standing may be submitted to the Secretary at any time until the announced deadline, which will normally be January 31st of the following year. A summary of nomination procedures, a list of Council vacancies, and a formal call for nominations shall be mailed to members well in advance of the deadline [, together with Association dues notices and the annual call for papers].

Les ajustements mineurs suivants sont requis dans les procédures de nomination pour refléter les pratiques actuelles
Proposition 1
Au règlement 5 b., Ajouter à la première phrase une parenthèse (en rouge ci-dessous) de manière à modifier le texte ainsi :
Le comité des candidatures est composé d'un président choisi parmi les anciens présidents de la Société (normalement le président sortant) et de deux autres membres de la Société nommés par le conseil.
Proposition 2
Au règlement 5 c. supprimer la dernière phrase (en rouge ci-dessous) puisque l'appel à candidatures, l'avis de cotisation et l'appel à communications sont maintenant envoyés séparément :
c. Après la tenue de l’assemblée générale annuelle, la mise en candidature régulière d’un membre en règle de la société peut être soumise au secrétaire en tout temps avant la date limite prévue, qui sera normalement le 31 janvier de l’année suivante. Bien avant la fin de ce délai, les membres reçoivent le règlement de mise en candidature, la liste des postes vacants au conseil et l’appel officiel de candidatures[; ils reçoivent en outre l’avis de cotisation et l’appel de communications annuels].

NOTICE OF MOTION
to establish a new bylaw concerning
an award of merit
The following motions concerning the Association’s finances will be moved on behalf of the Council by James Murray (President), seconded by Martin Cropp (Past President), at the next Annual General Meeting.
Preamble.
Over the last two years the Council has discussed and developed a proposal for an annual Award of Merit. During 2005–06 a subcommittee comprising John Porter, Bruce Robertson and Catherine Rubincam (chair) prepared an appropriate protocol, and a revised draft of this was approved by the Council in Fall 2006. This is now proposed as a new Bylaw 13 for approval by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in accordance with Article 10 of the Constitution.
Motion
13. a. The Association shall administer an Award of Merit in order to recognize a member’s longstanding and meritorious efforts in fulfilling the goals of the Association (as defined in Article 2 of the Constitution). The Award shall consist of a citation and certificate presented at the Annual General Meeting. The Award is an opportunity for the Association to acknowledge outstanding service to the discipline, such as, but not limited to, excellent or innovative teaching, mentoring of students and faculty colleagues, promoting knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world among the general public, and service to the Association.
b. The Award of Merit shall be made according to the following procedure. Each year before September 15th, the Association shall issue a call for nominations to all members, with a deadline for submissions of December 15th. Each nomination shall be signed by a nominator and a seconder, and shall include a statement of the specific reasons for the nomination. At or before its Fall meeting the Council shall strike a committee consisting of one ordinary Council member, two regular members of the Association, and the Past President as chair. This committee shall report its recommendation(s) to the Council at its spring meeting. One or more awards may be made in any year. The Committee shall compose citation(s) to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Association.

AVIS DE PROPOSITION
POUR L'ÉTABLISSEMENT D'UN NOUVEAU RÈGLEMENT CONCERNANT
UN PRIX DU MÉRITE
Les propositions suivantes touchant aux finances de la Société seront mises aux voies au nom du conseil par Jim Murray (président) et Martin Cropp (président sortant) lors de la prochaine Assemblée générale annuelle.
Préambule
Depuis deux ans, le conseil a élaboré une proposition pour l'établissement d'un « Prix du mérite » annuel. Durant l'année 2005-2006, un sous-comité composé de John Porter, Bruce Robertson et Catherine Rubincam (présidente) a préparé un protocole approprié, dont une version fut approuvée par le conseil à sa réunion ordinaire de l'automne 2006. Le texte est maintenant soumis au vote des membres lors de l'assemblée générale annuelle et en conformité de l'article 10 des statuts, pour être ajouté aux Règlements de la Société (13).
Proposition
13. a. La Société attribue un Prix du mérite pour reconnaître les efforts soutenus et méritoires d'un membre à l'accomplissement des objectifs de la Société (tels que définis à l'article 2 des Statuts). Le Prix consiste en une mention honorifique et un certificat offerts lors de l'assemblée générale annuelle. Le Prix est l'occasion pour la Société de reconnaître la contribution remarquable d'un membre pour la discipline, telle que, par exemple, un enseignement d'excellence et innovant, la formation et l'encadrement d'étudiants comme de collègues, la promotion des civilisations grecque et romaine auprès du grand public et les services rendus à la Société.
b. Le Prix du mérite est accordé selon la procédure suivante. Chaque année, avant le 15 septembre, la Société fait parvenir aux membres un appel à nominations dont la date limite est fixée au 15 décembre. Chaque nomination devra être co-signée par un proposeur et un secondeur et fournira un exposé des motifs qui justifient la nomination. Peu avant ou à l'occasion de sa réunion d'automne, le conseil constitue un comité présidé par le président sortant et composé d'un membre ordinaire du conseil et de deux membres de la Société. Le comité fera part de sa (ses) recommandation(s) au conseil à l'occasion de la réunion du printemps. Un ou plusieurs Prix peuvent être octroyés chaque année. Le comité se charge de la rédaction du texte de la (des) mention(s) qui sera (seront) lue(s) à l'assemblée générale annuelle de la Société.

Position in Classics
Brock University
The Department of Classics at Brock University invites applications for a 10-month Limited-Term Appointment in Classics at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor starting August 1st 2007.
The candidate must have the PhD in Classics (or closely related field) in hand or near completion. The courses to be taught include Greek and/or Latin at the introductory level and literature courses in translation.
The Department of Classics at Brock boasts ten permanent faculty members and has a vibrant undergraduate program and a new M.A. program.
Review of applications will commence on Tuesday 15 May and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a letter of application accompanied by a curriculum vitae and evidence of teaching competence, and should arrange for the submission of three letters of reference. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
