One-year Appointment

The Department of Classics at McMaster University invites applications for a contractually limited appointment to run for one year (July 1, 2006 - June 30, 2007). The successful candidate will teach 6 courses (3 per term) in Latin, Greek, mythology, and Classics in translation. A PhD in Classics is required, and a record of excellent teaching is preferred.

University of Toronto at Scarborough
Two-year Position

The University of Toronto at Scarborough invites applications for a two-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in Classics, beginning July 1, 2006 and ending June 30, 2008.

Classical Studies is part of a multi-disciplinary Humanities department in which about 1,000 students a year take courses in Classical Studies.

Qualifications: Ph.D. completed or near completion in Classics. Although no specific research field is specified for this position, the department is particularly interested in candidates who push beyond conventional boundaries in Classical studies. Evidence of teaching effectiveness, as well as an ability and willingness to teach a diverse group of courses, is required. The successful candidate will teach 4 courses (2 per term) and will be responsible primarily for providing courses in Greek and Roman History. The candidate should also be prepared to teach more broadly in the areas of ancient civilization and culture in both large lectures and smaller seminars. Ability to teach a course on an archeological topic and/or the Classical World in film would be an asset.

A New Era at the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme
General Announcement

Beginning 1 April 2006, the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme (ASPP), part of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS), will feature a new funding structure designed to meet the changing needs of Canadian scholars. This has been made possible by a funding increase from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

An award from the ASPP is designed to help offset costs of marketing and promoting a scholarly work. For all submissions made on or after 1 April 2006, the available subvention will be $8,000, up from the former support level of $7,000. As well as an increase in the overall number of regular subventions available, there will now also be a distinct stream for first-time authors of scholarly works (excluding collective works), and five subventions per year devoted to translations. Successful candidates applying for a translation subvention will also be eligible for a grant of up to $4,000 to help offset the costs of translating the work. For those works successful in obtaining ASPP support, subventions are paid directly to qualified Canadian scholarly publishers after the book has appeared. Authors may also work with non-Canadian presses in certain instances, subject to approval by the Management Board of the ASPP.

Enrichissement du Programme d'aide à l'édition savante

À compter du 1er avril 2006, le Programme d'aide à l'édition savante (PAES), qui fait partie de la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines (FCSH), offrira une nouvelle structure de financement conçue pour répondre à l'évolution des besoins des chercheurs canadiens. Ce relèvement des subventions à 8 000 $ a été rendu possible grâ;ce à un accroissement du financement du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH).

Les subventions du PAES servent à aider à couvrir les frais de commercialisation et de promotion d'un ouvrage savant. Pour tous les manuscrits soumis à compter du 1er avril 2006, la subvention offerte sera de 8 000 $, comparativement au niveau antérieur de 7 000 $. En outre, dans le cadre de l'augmentation du nombre des subventions ordinaires, on créera désormais un volet distinct pour les nouveaux auteurs d'ouvrages savants (à l'exclusion des ouvrages collectifs), et cinq subventions annuelles aux traductions. Les candidats reçus qui font une demande de subvention de traduction seront également admissibles à une subvention à concurrence de 4 000 $ pour aider à couvrir les frais de traduction de leur ouvrage. Lorsqu'un ouvrage obtient l'appui du PAES, les subventions sont versées directement à la maison d'édition savante canadienne approuvée, une fois l'ouvrage publié.
