Desmond Conacher Scholarship

BOURSE DESMOND CONACHER

Le comité de sélection a le plaisir d'annoncer l'attribution de la Bourse Desmond Conacher pour l'année 2005 à ARWEN FLEMING, qui a achevé cette année le baccalauréat en études anciennes de l'Université de Alberta et commence maintenant ses études de maîtrise à la même université. Le comité a remarqué l'excellence des candidatures soumises en 2005, et veut remercir tou(te)s les candidat(e)s ainsi que ceux et celles qui leur ont fourni des conseils et des lettres de recommandation.

Le comité veut aussi renouveler se remerciements à tou(te)s ceux et celles qui ont généreusement contribué à la Fondation Desmond Conacher, et qui continuent à offrir des dons pour assurer le continuité et la valeur de la bourse.

DESMOND CONACHER SCHOLARSHIP

The Awards Committee of the Classical Association of Canada is pleased to announce that the 2005 Desmond Conacher Scholarship has been awarded to ARWEN FLEMING, who completed her BA degree this year at the University of Alberta and is now enrolled in the MA program there. This year's applications were of a high standard, and the committee wishes to thank all those who submitted applications and those who supported them with advice and references.

The committee also wishes to thank once again those who have helped to establish the scholarship fund and who continue to make donations which will ensure the sustainability and value of the award.

A call for applications for the 2006 Desmond Conacher Scholarship will be issued in November. General information about the award, and about donations, is available on the CAC website (http://www.usask.ca/classics/cac/conacher/index.html).

University of Waterloo
Two-year Definite Term Appointment

Applications are being accepted for a two-year definite term appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Classical Studies beginning July 1, 2006. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Classical Studies in hand or close to completion, and an ability to teach a variety of courses in classical civilizations and the Greek and Latin languages. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Consideration of applications will begin December 15, 2005.

POSITION 1

Tenure-track

The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University invites applications for a tenure-track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2006, subject to budgetary approval. We are seeking a candidate with a research specialty in Greek history (including social history), with specific expertise in Greek epigraphy. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or be certain of its completion before beginning the appointment, and will be competent to teach courses in Classical civilization and in Classical Greek at all levels. Other requirements include a demonstrated excellence in teaching, and evidence of a research program and publications. Applicants are asked to submit a curriculum vitae, a covering letter outlining research interests and potential contribution to the Department, a short teaching dossier, a writing sample (maximum 25 pages), and to arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to: Professor Joann Freed, Chair, Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3C5, by November 21, 2005. McGill University
Tenure-track Position in Ancient Greek Language and Literature

The Department of History and Classics program invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in Ancient Greek language and literature, effective 1 August 2006. A primary research specialization in Greek Epic, Lyric or Drama is preferred. The successful candidate should hold a PhD and show promise of excellence in teaching and scholarly research. The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses is required. A letter of application, curriculum vitae, one-page statement of teaching philosophy, and three confidential letters of reference should be sent to Professor Brian Lewis, Chair, Department of History, McGill University, 855 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, H3A 2T7. The application deadline is 15 November 2005. We will conduct interviews at the January 2006 meeting of the American Philological Association in Montreal.

On Site: Canadian Archaeologists in Greece

This booklet is the first in a series being produced by Motibo Books on the work of the foreign archaeological schools in Athens. It describes the work of past notable Canadian archaeologists in Greece including Charles Trick Currelly (of the Royal Ontario Museum) and Homer Thompson (Director of the Athenian Agora excavations), gives a history of the Canadian Archaeological Institute in Athens (now the "Canadian Institute in Greece"), and briefly outlines and illustrates Canadian projects throughout Greece, including Argilos, Kallithea, Karystos, Mytilene, Khostia, Stymphalos, Kiapha Thiti, Sphakia, Kamares, and the Persian War Shipwreck survey.
