Ancient Greek Drama and Culture
The Division of Humanities, Faculty of Arts, York University invites
applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the Assistant Professor
level in the field of Ancient Greek Drama and Culture. This appointment,
to commence July 1, 2006, is subject to budgetary approval.
We seek a candidate with a completed PhD with a focus on Classical Greek
drama and culture. Preference will be given to candidates who approach
Greek drama from a broad interdisciplinary perspective; areas of research
could include performance, gender, cross-cultural or reception studies.
The successful candidate will show evidence of a vigorous research agenda
and promise of excellence in teaching.
Candidates should be able to teach in York's first- and second-year
interdisciplinary Foundations program, develop upper-level undergraduate
courses, and contribute to the teaching of Greek and Latin language; they
must also have the potential to undertake graduate teaching and
supervision. The successful candidate will join the Program in Classical
Studies within the Division of Humanities.

Tenure-track Position
Applications are invited for a probationary (tenure-track) position at
the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2006. The successful
applicant will participate in a programme with a full range of courses in
classical civilization and languages, and be expected to have a strong
commitment to research and teaching, as well as a solid background in
Greek and Latin philology. Although no particular area of expertise is
being sought, preference will be given to candidates with a
research-interest in Latin poetry or archaeology (Hellenistic or Roman).
Applicants should have the Ph.D. or be in the final stages of its

Bachelor of Education: Classical Studies: Latin
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto
This degree was resurrected in 2000 after a 20 year absence from
FEUT/OISE's course offerings and has trained 27 Latin teachers, 22 of
whom hold contract positions in Ontario, the U.S., and Britain; currently
6 candidates are enrolled in the programme. The degree will be offered
again in 2006-2007.
Candidates must apply on-line through Ontario University Application

between 01 September and
30 November 2005. Candidates' first choice MUST be OISE/UT, I/S
(Intermediate/Senior programme), Classical Studies: Latin and a
"mainstream teachable" for the second required course.
Classics courses are generally considered "history" courses; try to add
at least 3 full-year or 18 credits, in a third "teachable" such as
math, art, French. Remember that history is a saturated field and so it
is better to add 3 full-year or 18 credits, in another "mainstream"
course. The more courses for which a candidate is academically qualified,
the better the chances of being hired after graduation.
Candidates MUST have completed 5 full-year or 30 credits in Latin to
qualify for the programme. Candidates must have a MINIMUM of 2 years
volunteer experience working with students at the age which they hope to
teach; appropriate and preferred experience includes volunteering in a
school setting, coaching, working with clubs, literacy initiatives etc.
Working with Scouts, on a rep. soccer team, acting as a TA will also be
considered by OISE.
All candidates must write an essay or summary statement in which they
discuss their teaching philosophy and reasons for wanting to pursue a
career in teaching. Write this early, leaving sufficient time to consult
a professor for help with spelling, grammar, cogency and sense.
