Classical Association of Canada: Annual Meeting, 2006

The next annual meeting of the Classical Association of Canada will take place at Victoria College, University of Toronto on May 24-26, 2006. A call for papers will be published in October. Tenure-track Appointment in Greek Literature and Cultural Studies
McMaster University

The Department of Classics at McMaster University invites applications for a new tenure-track appointment in Greek Literature and Cultural Studies at the Assistant Professor level to commence July 1, 2006. McMaster University is a research-intensive university, and the Department of Classics has undergraduate degree programmes in Greek, Latin, and Classical culture, as well as programmes leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Classics, with specialization in Greek language and literature, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research, with a clearly defined research programme which will result in publication. The successful candidate will be expected to teach ancient Greek language and literature at all levels (in the original as well as in translation) and to contribute to all aspects of the Department's graduate programme. Research specialization in cultural studies which complements the department's existing strengths and the ability to teach courses in Latin as well as Greek are both essential. The current minimum salary floor for Assistant Professor is $51,357. Applications must be received by November 30, 2005, and applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to reach the Department by the same date. The Department will be conducting interviews at the January 2006 meeting of the American Philological Association in Montreal. Exhibition & Lecture Announcements

The Togo Salmon Centenary Exhibition
The Classical World and Its Influence
McMaster Museum of Art September 4 - October 23, 2005

In honour of the centenary of E. Togo Salmon's birth, the McMaster Museum of Art is mounting an exhibition which surveys the response to classical culture by artists of later ages, including the contemporary era. The exhibit features items of ancient date that were bequeathed to the museum by Togo Salmon, etchings of Roman antiquities by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Luigi Rossini, 15th-20th century art from McMaster's permanent collection and works on loan. Contemporary art such as paintings from Russia illustrating classical architecture by Edward Tabachnik (Ontario), sculptures reminiscent of ancient bronze vessels by Audra Schoblocher (Alberta), and sculptures revealing the sanguinary origins of classical architectural ornament by Spring Hurlbut (Ontario) will further illustrate that the power of the past continues to inform the present. In association with this exhibit, the Faculty of Humanities is sponsoring Robin Osborne, Professor of Ancient History at Cambridge University, as Distinguished Hooker Visiting Professor. Professor Osborne will be giving a public lecture entitled "The Politics of Visual Images" on Thursday, September 29th at 5.30 p.m. in the Council Chambers in Gilmour Hall on the McMaster campus, and a departmental seminar entitled: "Was there an Athenian Democratic Revolution and if so when?" on Wednesday September 28 at 4:30 in Togo Salmon Hall 701.

New Electronic Resource in Numismatics

The Department of Classics and the McMaster University Museum of Art are pleased to announce a new electronic resource in numismatics:

The site, which was sponsored by the E.T. Salmon Fund in Roman Studies, boasts scanned images of the coins in the McMaster coin collection, catalogued and organized chronologically, with a search engine, glossary, and an explanatory essay by Bruce Brace, the collection's honorary curator.
