I am writing to ask your assistance as
I formulate a response, on behalf of the CAC, to the SSHRC
Transformation Proposal. Many of you will no doubt have been involved
in discussions of this proposal co-ordinated by your universities'
representatives to the General Assembly of the Canadian Federation for
the Humanities & Social Sciences, which is handling the logistics
of the consultation process. The consultation process is being
organized both through the universities and through the learned
associations, which also supply representatives to the CFHSS. It is
highly important that every scholar doing research in the Humanities
and Social Sciences at a Canadian university take the opportunity to
make his/her voice heard in response to this proposal, which involves a
major reshaping of the Granting Council on which we chiefly depend to
fund our research.
Please read the Consultation Documents on the SSHRC website
(http://www.sshrc.ca/ ), and fill out the questionnaire. I would
appreciate it if any member of the CAC who is filling out SSHRC's
questionnaire would forward to me (rubincam@utm.utoronto.ca) a copy of
their response, so that my official response on behalf of the CAC can
reflect the opinions of as wide a selection as possible of the
Association's members.
The schedule for the consultation process is extremely tight. I shall
be taking part in a weekend meeting of Association presidents in Ottawa
at the end of March, and would welcome expressions of opinion from
members of the CAC before March 26 or shortly thereafter.
Yours sincerely,
Catherine Rubincam
