As we are all grading papers, could you keep in mind the Annual Undergraduate Essay Contest? This year, as has been the case for the last couple of years, there will be two contests, one for junior-level courses, and one for senior-level courses (where some background in Classics is expected). Either instructors or the students themselves may submit their essays.  Please submit a clean copy, preferably with no identification of either student or school (a separate page should be attached, giving this information). The deadline is August 31, 2003, to allow the submission of essays written for summer courses.

Applications are invited for a one-year Limited Term position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2003.  The successful applicant will be required to teach the equivalent of four full courses, including Greek and Latin Elements in English, Technology and Engineering in the Ancient Word, the Greek half of an honours course in Greek and Roman History, an honours half-course survey of Latin prose, and a full-year Beginners’ Latin course. Summer Course in Epigraphy

The Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies at Ohio State University together with the American Society for Greek and Latin Epigraphy offers a Summer Course in Greek Epigraphy from July 28 until
August 8, 2003.

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to (mostly Greek) epigraphy to graduate students and junior faculty who have little or no previous experience with the discipline. The course will enable them to make profitable and knowledgeable use of inscriptions in their research and their teaching.

The course will be taught by Kevin Clinton, Cornell University, and Fritz Graf, Ohio State University, with the assistance of outside and local instructors for special fields. The course puts an emphasis on first-hand experience with inscriptions and requires a high degree of independent work in very small teams. Knowledge of epigraphy is no prerequisite, competence in Ancient Greek is.

The course fee (which is subsidized by the American Society for Greek and Latin Epigraphy) covers the use of the Center and its facilities, tuition, campus housing (in units that comprise study, bedroom, and bath; breakfast included).  There are four options for housing that determine the course fee:

(1) Full housekeeping (includes linen and towels) double occupancy:
course fee 800.00, single 1100.00
(2) Limited housekeeping (linen only) double occupancy: course fee
720.00, single 1000.00.

The participants arrange their own travel to Columbus.

Archaeological Fieldschool in Greece

The University of Missouri-St. Louis is accepting students and volunteers for its archaeological fieldschool at Iklaina, Pylos, Greece. The fieldschool will run from May 25 to June 7 and includes also travel to the major sites and museums in the Peloponnese and evening classes and seminars on Greek culture, history, and archaeology. Students can receive 6 credits through the department of Anthropology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; volunteers on an auditing basis are also welcome to apply. Deadline for applications: April 1. Following the success of the first student conference in September 2001, the Canadian Academic Institute in Athens is holding its second conference of student papers. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Classical Studies of the University of Waterloo. The meetings will be held at the University of Waterloo, concurrently with another CAIA sponsored conference on the Ancient and Modern Olympics, at the University of Wilfrid Laurier. It will be possible for students to attend some of the lectures there, on Saturday, October 4.

Senior undergraduate or graduate students are invited to submit research papers on any subject of Greek studies, ancient to modern, in any discipline.

Please submit your abstract electronically to <sheila.campbell@utoronto.ca>, clearly stating your academic affiliation, the time required, i.e. 15 or 30 minutes, and whether any a.v. aides are required, by April 30. Notification of acceptance of the paper will be sent by May 30, 2003.

Studia Humaniora Tartuensia (SHT) is an open access on-line journal of the Humanities that was founded in 2000. Its purpose is to publish scholarly papers, notes and reviews embodying original research in all areas of the Humanities, and especially in classics and ancient history. We encourage interdisciplinary contributions and submissions that use new approaches to elucidate their topic. Detailed treatments of specific themes are also welcome. The contributions should be in one of the following languages: English, German, French, Latin. Translations of the articles already published in some other language are also
accepted.

The first number of the journal (2000) is devoted entirely to classical studies and ancient history, but from the second number (2001) on there are also other subsections. Despite its name the journal is not restricted to Tartuvian contributors. We encourage all interested parties to take part in its development. Contributions can be sent to the editorial address (see below) throughout the year.

Papers are published on-line only and are in the international Portable Document Format (PDF). This enables readers to view Greek text and other original formatting without problems, provided that one has the free Acrobat Reader installed. Outprints of papers are available.

There is no minimum or maximum length for a contribution. It should be presented as a computer file (MS Word 6.0/7.0/97/2000 or Rich Text Format; other formats might or might not be acceptable), in case of difficult formatting (tables, Greek fonts, etc.) also as a print-out (one copy is sufficient). Please include information about any special formatting and/or fonts. The article should be accompanied by an abstract of about 10 lines.

The editors reserve the right to reject a paper, send it back for correction/revision, or ask the opinion of an anonymous reader active in the given field of study.

The Department of Classics at University of Wales Lampeter UK is pleased to announce the launch of Mathos, a free website for learning Ancient Greek.  The site has a free download Greek font, and topics on elementary Greek grammar and syntax connected with basic verb, noun, adjective and pronoun forms, reinforced with exercises, readings, sound files (to hear the pronunciation), glossary of grammatical terms and Word Lists.
