Fifth E. Togo Salmon Conference:
"Diplomats and Diplomacy in the Roman World"

The Department of Classics at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) invites classicists, historians, and students of diplomacy to the Fifth E. Togo Salmon Conference, McMaster University, September 24-25, 2004.  This conference will follow the same format as the preceding Salmon Conferences, and its refereed proceedings will be published as E. Togo Salmon Papers V.

The theme of the conference will be ‘Diplomats and Diplomacy in the Roman World’. Over the entire history of Rome, communication was a challenge, and any communication between states inevitably depended on diplomatic exchange.  Even when letters were written, they had to be delivered, and practical considerations imposed by distance required that negotiations, when necessary, be entrusted to individual diplomats.  Diplomacy was not merely associated with foreign relations. Rome’s empire was an empire of cities, and diplomatic exchange was fundamental to internal communication: both between periphery and center, and between different parts of the periphery.  The conference will explore diplomacy both as part of the history of Rome and as a phenomenon with a history of its own.  Speakers will include W. Eck (Cologne) and C. P. Jones (Harvard).

Abstracts of not more than 200 words should be sent by 26 Sepember 2003 as email attachment to Dr. Claude Eilers <eilersc@mcmaster.ca> in Word (.doc) or RTF (.rtf) format and include ‘Togo Salmon V’ in the subject, or by mail to:
