The Department of Classics at Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for 3 tenure-track appointments. Qualified applicants in most fields will be considered, and successful candidates should expect to teach courses at all levels of Greek and Latin as well as a wide variety of courses in translation. The positions will commence July 1, 2004, subject to budgetary approval.  Tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor will be offered in the case of successful candidates with a completed Ph.D; otherwise, a 3-year contractual appointment will be offered with automatic conversion to a tenure-track appointment on completion of the doctoral degree. Consideration of applications will begin October 15, 2003, and all applications should reach the Head no later than November 17, 2003.Applications should be accompanied by a current curriculum vitae, a teaching dossier, and the names of three persons who can supply a letter of reference.

Qualifications:

-une expérience de fouilles archéologiques;
-une compétence complémentaire en histoire ancienne ou en histoire de l’art;
-la connaissance des langues anciennes ou modernes pertinentes.

Description du poste:
1. Enseignement aux trois cycles en archéologie dans les programmes d’archéologie, d’histoire de l’art, d’études anciennes et d’histoire.
2. Recherches et publications dans le domaine de spécialisation du candidat.
3. Participation au fonctionnement des instances universitaires.

The Canadian Academic Institute in Athens and Wilfrid Laurier University, together with the University of Guelph, the University of Western Ontario and the University of  Windsor invite all interested faculty and students to attend a conference on the history of the Olympic festival, ancient to modern, entitled: Onward to the Olympics: Historical Perspectives on the Olympic Games

The conference will be held at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario on October 3-4, 2003. Keynote speakers include Donald Kyle, University of Texas at Arlington (paper title: “Fabulous Females and Ancient Olympia”) and Mark Dyreson, Penn State University (paper title: “‘To Construct a Better and More Peaceful World’ (de Coubertin) or ‘War Minus the Shooting’ (George Orwell)?: The Olympic Movement's Second Century”).
