The Department of History & Classics invites applications for a tenure track position in Classics (position # 10201) at the Assistant Professor level effective 1 July 2004.  Candidates should have a completed Ph.D. by the appointment date, an established research programme that has led to publications, and a record of innovative and successful teaching. They should be qualified to teach a variety of classical civilization courses including art, architecture, myth, and history, and also to teach Greek and Latin in accordance with the needs of the Department’s Classics programme.

Tenure-track Position in Ancient Greek History

The Department of Classics at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Ancient Greek History  at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to commence July 1, 2004. Minimum annual salary at the Assistant Professor rank will be $49,861 as of July 1, 2004.

McMaster University is a research intensive university and the Department of Classics has undergraduate degree programmes in Greek, Latin, and classical culture, as well as programmes leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Classics or Ancient History, with specialization in Ancient Greek History and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research, with a clearly defined research programme  which will result in publication.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in ancient history (including Greek historical writers in the original) and classical culture and to contribute to all aspects of the Department's graduate programme.  The ability to teach courses in Greek and Latin is essential.  The ability to teach an undergraduate course in non-Graeco-Roman civilizations will be considered an advantage.

Tenure-stream Position in Roman History
The Department of Classics at the University of Toronto is soliciting applications for a tenure-stream position in Roman history at the rank of assistant professor. The successful applicant will have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching and be expected to contribute to a growing and research-intensive doctoral programme and to a thriving undergraduate programme in Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilization; an ability to teach Latin prose authors at all levels is required. The department is particularly interested in candidates who combine a thorough training in Classics with an interest in other humanities disciplines.

The appointment will begin 1 July 2004; an appropriate doctoral degree must have been earned by that date. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applications should include: a curriculum vitae, a sample of academic writing, evidence of excellence in teaching, and a short description of the applicant's current research plans.
