Subject to budgetary approval, The Department of Classics at McMaster University invites applications for a 3-year contractually limited appointment in the area of Classical Archaeology at the Assistant Professor level to commence July 1, 2002.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology or related discipline (research specialization open) and demonstrated excellence in research and teaching.  The ability to teach courses in Greek and Latin is essential.  The current minimum salary floor for Assistant Professor is $43,662.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Summer Sessions for 2002: two six-week sessions (June 10 through July 24 and  June 17 through July 31) are designed for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its antiquities in a limited time, and to improve their understanding of the relationship between the monuments, landscape, and climate of the country and its history, literature, and culture.

Cost of program is $2,950 (tuition, accommodations for entire six weeks, partial board, all travel within Greece, site and museum entrance fees).  Round-trip travel from the U.S. to Greece is responsibility of participant.

Scholarships are available for elementary and secondary school teachers in public or private schools, graduate students, and college teachers to participate in the ASCSA Summer Sessions program.  Fields of study include: art, Classics, Greek, Hellenic studies, history, Latin, languages, literature, social studies, world cultures.

Fulbright Foundation
Two scholarships available this year as part of a new pilot project with the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program.  Open to teachers in grades 7 through 12 and college teachers, whose teaching of courses in social studies, language, and/or history, would be enhanced by the School's summer program. Amount: $3,500 (covers cost of program, plus $550 cash stipend)

Rea Silvia Borza Scholarship
The Borza is reserved for a high school teacher in history, art, literature or some other field that would be enhanced by a summer's study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.  Preference will be given to teachers in public high schools. Amount: $1,500

Katherine Keene Scholarship
The Keene scholarship is awarded to a public high school teacher who teaches social studies or has shown interest in aspects of the Classics, and has been able to include that material in his/her offerings. Amount: $2,800

Semple Award of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South
Secondary school Greek or Latin teachers and graduate students in a degree-granting program in Classics who are members of CAMWS are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Amount: $2,500

Arthur Patch McKinlay Scholarships of the American Classical League
The applicant must have been a member of the ACL for at least three years, plus current academic year, and must have taught Classics at the elementary or secondary school level during the 2001/2002 school year.  College/university teachers are not eligible. Amount: Up to $1,500

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarship for the ASCSA
Members and alumni of Eta Sigma Phi who have received a Bachelor's degree since January 1, 1996 and on or before June 2002, and who have not received a doctoral degree are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  In selecting the winner, the Committee will give attention to the quality of the applicant's work in Greek and Latin, intention to teach at the secondary school or college level, and contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national levels. Amount: One-half of all fees, plus stipend (ASCSA pays half of all fees)

CANE Endowment Scholarship
Residents of New England who are currently members of the Classical Association of New England and have been members in good standing for the past two years or more are eligible.  Public and private elementary and secondary school teachers are eligible. However, preference is given to secondary school teachers. Amount: $4,510

This is an invitation to all interested graduate students, in any discipline, to submit abstracts of original research for presentation at the annual University of British Columbia Society of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies Graduate Student conference.  The aim of this conference is to give graduate students a less formal and more intimate forum in which to present papers related to the theme of Frontiers: Religion, Literature and Empire.  The conference will take place at the University of British Columbia from May 9-10, 2002 in the days prior to the annual conference of the Classical Association of Canada.  The abstracts should be no more than one page, double-spaced and may be addressed via regular mail to: SCANNERS Graduate Conference, c/o The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies, C260-1866 Buchanan Building- Main Mall, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC V6T-1Z1.  Abstracts may also be submitted via email to <frontiersubc@hotmail.com>.  For the latter, please submit abstracts in
