Assistant for Outreach Enhancement

The Canadian Archaeological Institute at Athens will be offering an eight-month internship, 1 September 2001 - 30 April 2002, in association with the Young Canada Works International program.

The intern will work in the Athens office assisting in the development of fundraising projects and acting as liaison with Canadian post-secondary institutions. Fluent English and a knowledge of French are required. Some familiarity with Modern Greek would be an advantage.  The ideal candidate will be personable, enjoy meeting people, have a genuine interest in Greek culture and history, and in making a contribution to  reek-Canadian relations.

In addition to salary, the intern will receive an allowance for accommodation at the Institute's hostel.

To be eligible, candidates must be Canadian citizens or legally entitled to work in Canada (Permanent Residents). They must be graduates, up to age 30, from a university or college program; be unemployed or underemployed; non-Canadian graduates holding a temporary work visa or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible. In addition, to be eligible, candidates must not have participated or been paid or accepted previously under any other internship program that is funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.

Senior Level Position in Roman History
Department of Greek and Roman Studies

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies invites applications for a senior level position in Roman History.  We are seeking to make the appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.  Applicants should be demonstrably active in research and publication, should be able to offer a broad range of courses in Roman history, to introduce innovative courses related to their research areas, and to teach Latin at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.  In addition, the successful candidate should be willing to supervise MA students concentrating on Roman history and to participate in other relevant components of our MA programme.  The Department is interested in applications from candidates whose work reflects an engagement with social and cultural history.  Applications from candidates with innovative, interdisciplinary or cross-cultural approaches to Roman history will also be particularly welcome.  A willingness to contribute
to the life and growth of the department is essential.  The appointment will commence on 1 July 2002; rank of appointment will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate.  The salary floor for an Associate Professor in 2000-2001 was $60,000. Greek Drama III - In memory of Kevin Lee

After the success of the Conferences in 1982 in Sydney and 1992 in Christchurch a third Conference on Greek Drama will be held in the University of Sydney from July 8-11, 2002. The Conference will allow for discussion of all aspects of Greek Tragedy and Old and New Comedy, including Nachleben in the Roman and later theatres, and Performance.  It is hoped that keynote addresses will be given by Professor Patricia Easterling and Professor-elect Richard Hunter.

This notice is a preliminary call for papers which should be of either 40 or 20 minutes duration.  The possibility of (a) panel discussion(s) is also being considered. A registration form, a provisional programme and a final call for papers will be distributed towards the end of 2001.

Accommodation will be available in Sancta Sophia College; there are comfortable motels in the vicinity.

All interested in taking part in the Conference are asked to contact one of the Conveners with provisional paper-titles or suggestions for a panel discussion before 1st September, 2001.

Egypt and Cyprus in Antiquity
International Conference: Call for Papers

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its foundation, the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI), together with the Archaeological Research Unit (ARU) of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus, are organising an international conference, to be held in Nicosia from Thursday 3 April to Sunday 6 April 2003 inclusive, on EGYPT AND CYPRUS IN ANTIQUITY

Many new discoveries and findings have been made in both Egypt and Cyprus since the principal works on this theme were published.  It is timely to bring the results of recent fieldwork and research together in a forum where their bearing on the process of historical reconstruction can be expertly and collectively evaluated.  The conference will cover the period from the 3rd millennium BC to the 6th century AD, and will comprise three large chronological areas:
        A: from the Chalcolithic to the Late Bronze Age;
        B: from c. the 11th to the end of the 4th century BC;
        C: The Ptolemaic and Late Roman periods.

The languages of the conference will be English, French and Greek.  Participants, other than keynote speakers, will be allowed 25 minutes each for their delivery.

Those who are interested in attending and giving a paper should send an abstract of c. 500 words by post, fax or (preferably) e-mail to the Secretariat of the conference by 31 December 2001.  In order to preserve a balance between the periods covered, the organisers reserve the right not to accept proposed titles, or to suggest alternative ones of their own. Speakers will be responsible for making and paying for their own travel to Cyprus.  There will be no registration fee and the conference will be open to the public.

UNB Colloquium on Ancient Art
Call for Papers

Dictionary of British Classicists, 1500-1960

Thoemmes Press has begun plans for a new Dictionary of British Classicists, 1500-1960, in conjunction with its developing programme for the reprinting of works in the areas of Classics and Ancient Philosophy.

The Dictionary will contain between 500 and 600 biobibliographical entries, and be published in two volumes.  It will be the first single biographical resource dealing with British Classicists.  There is, of course, considerable biographical material available on British Classics, but it has not hitherto been collected in a single compendium.  That such a project is worthwhile is without question, and some years ago an analogous project was successfully undertaken in North America with the Biographical Dictionary of North American Classicists (1994), edited by Ward Briggs.

The bulk of the Dictionary will consist of entries about individuals, but there will probably be two Appendices: one on Journals and one on Societies.  The individuals covered will mostly have been born, educated, and made their careers in the British Isles, but will include those born and educated elsewhere whose careers were pursued in Britain.  The term 'classicist' will apply to individuals who contributed in any way to the study of Graeco-Roman culture, or to its organization and propagation.  This implies a high degree of inclusivity, since individuals will not always be included on the basis of scholarly publications, or institutional affiliation.  The cut-off date of 1960 is approximate.  The criterion to be used is that individuals covered will have initiated their careers by around 1945 and be deceased. The majority of subjects, that is, will have been born by around 1920.
