Graduate Student Opportunity: Roman Studies

Master of Arts Program, Department of Classics, University of Manitoba

The Department of Classics at the University of Manitoba is pleased to be able to offer a two-year funded M.A. scholarship (2023-2025) for a student to study an aspect of the ancient Roman world (c. 50 BCE to 650 CE), with a preference for (but not limited to) a research topic that pertains to the Roman army or the Roman Middle East.  Funding for the award is courtesy of the SSHRC Insight Grant held by Dr. Conor Whately at the University of Winnipeg on soldier-civilian interaction in the Roman and Late Antique Middle East, from the conquest of the Nabataean Kingdom by the Romans around 110 CE to the Arab conquest around 650 CE. Preliminary research has been posted on a website devoted to the project found here, https://romanarabia.wordpress.com/

The MA in Classics at the University of Manitoba is a two-year degree with required coursework followed by a major research project or thesis. Though the call for applications is not limited to Canadians or Canadian residents, the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba requires a minimum period of residency in Winnipeg to complete coursework and other program requirements. The selected applicant will receive a stipend of CAD $17,500 per year for each of the two years. This support does not include tuition or fees. Additional funds will be available for travel for both research purposes and conference attendance. Applicants should apply in writing (a letter of application and a statement of research interests) to Dr. Conor Whately (c.whately@uwinnipeg.ca) no later than 15 January 2023.  Information on the M.A. programme in Classics at the University of Manitoba may be found below. For more details, please contact Dr. James Chlup (James.Chlup@umanitoba.ca).
